2. Contractor will procure closures with a factory finish suitable for application of the paint system described below
2. For weather deck doors provide temporary closure to protect the vessel’s interior and to maintain climate controlled conditions during the period that the closure is removed. Closures for deck openings shall be able to support 30 pounds per square foot. Closures for doors shall be hinged so as not to impede personnel flow and shall be securable.
2. At each location the contractor shall take all precautions to protect surrounding areas from damage and degradation.
2. Door panels, door components requiring preservation, and door frames shall be painted (except for edges) prior to installation inside a paint booth at the contractors shop.
2. Contractor shall disassemble new closure in preparation for applying paint system.
6. (CHECKPOINT) The MSC Paint Rep shall inspect and approve the surface preparation from the vendor prior to application of any coating.
3. Mask off portions of the door not requiring preservation.
3. Perform an SSPC-SP-1 on all areas to be painted.
3. Watertight closures shall be coated with one coat of inorganic zinc primer followed by one coat of epoxy A.C., and one topcoat of to all required surfaces. The topcoat color and paint type shall match the removed WTD colors.

6. Install protective measures in way of all work to protect decks and equipment.
6. Accomplish the following test to the repaired doors:
5. (CHECKPOINT) Perform a chalk test on all closures prior to final tightness test. The impression of the knife-edge shall be continuous around the closure and shall be centered on the gasket.
5. (CHECKPOINT) Watertight closures located on weather decks or exterior bulkheads shall be hose tested. A 1-1/2 inch hose with not less than 70 PSI water pressure shall be directed all around the closure from a distance of not more than 10 feet. The water shall be applied from the weather deck side of the closure. The stream of water shall be moved slowly to ensure that the entire sealing surface, particularly the butt joint, is subjected to the full force of the water. No leakage shall be allowed.
5. (CHECKPOINT) Watertight closures located within the vessel's interior shall be soap and air tested in lieu of being hose tested. Compressed air of not less than 90 PSI shall be directed all around the closure from a distance of not more than 1 Foot. From the opposite side of the closure, a soapy water solution or a commercially available leak indicating solution shall be liberally applied to the gasket to indicate leaks. The stream of air shall be moved slowly to ensure that the entire sealing surface, particularly the butt joint, is subjected to the full force of the air. No leakage shall be allowed.
5. All tests shall be witnessed and approved by the MSCREP and the ABS Surveyor.
NOTE:
Neither hammers, mauls, or materials of like intent nor cheater pipes more than one foot in length shall be used to operate the dogs for securing the closure for testing. Use of force greater than that normally expected from one man, utilizing a one-foot cheater pipe would be grounds for rejecting the tests.
