NGEN Tools Data Dictionary
| Item | Definition |
| Capability Suite | A software suite or application suite is a collection of computer programs — usually application software or programming software — of related functionality, often sharing a similar user interface and the ability to easily exchange data with each other. |
| Capability/Component Name | The manufacturer name of a specific component/item of software within a tool suite. If a listed capability is not part of a suite of capabilities, this section would record the individual capabability named. |
| Version | The version of software recorded for the capability component documented with an incremental number set used to identify the updated, developed, and released state of a capability/component. |
| Manufacturer | The company that owns the intellectual property license to the capabilty installed. |
| Information As Of: | The date of the most recent update of the infomration provided supporting the capability described. |
| Government Assessment | Identifies if the capability has been assessed by the Innovations Cell, an independent assessment team tasked by the government to assess all capabilites deployed on the NMCI and ONE-Net environments. |
| Classification | Specifies if the capability/component is a Tool, Application, Probe/Sensor, Utility, or Repository: |
Tool - Software that is accessed from the network, and is needed to perform a job function under NGEN. Might involve data aggregation (or data mining) of NGEN Operational Data. A tool is not installed locally on a user's machine, but is often accessed via a web browser. One example of a Tool is BOSS.
Application - Software that is installed locally, and allows a user to create or compile data. One example of an Application is TRIM.
Script - Single task oriented function that is parsed at runtime. Assists the interface process with a tool or application.
Probe/Sensor - Software that scans the network environment for an asset or information (hardware, software, network traffic). One example of a Probe is UD (Universal Discovery) Probes for UCMDB.
Utility - Software with limited functionality. One example of a Utility is Storage Essentials (which feeds EPDM and CPDM).
Repository - Structured - Any location containing structured data (e.g. SharePoint) and supporting network operations.
Repository - Unstructured - Any location containing unstructured data (e.g. File Shares containing configuration items or pertinent artifiacts), and supporting network operations.
Product Type The type of software identified as :
COTS - "Commercial Off The Shelf" software products that are ready-made and available for sale or open source to the general public.
GOTS - "Government Off The Shelf" software products that were created and are owned by government agencies.
Contractor Developed - NMCI Specific - Software developed by the NMCI Contractor for a specific use within the NMCI environment Government Developed - NMCI Specific - Software developed by the Government for a specific use within the NMCI environment
| Cybersecurity - SIEM Aligned Capability | Identification of a cybersecurity capability aligned to SIEM on either the NMCI or ONE-Net environments. |
| SIEM Use Case | SIEM use case identified for the aligned cybersecurity capability. |
| Ownership | The entity that owns the software license to istantiate the capability within the network enterprise. |
| Operator | The entity tasked with the responsibility to operate, update and maintain the software instantiated within the enterprise. |
| Status | The status of a capability's deployment condition: |
In Production - The capability is currently deployed, being maintained and functioning on the enterprise.
Future State - Planned - The capability is designated to be deployed to the enterprise. It has an approved ATO and there is an established project plan that procures required licenses, establishes design requirements, conducts required testing and evaluation in a test/pre-production environment, and deploys the software package into production.
Retired - The capbability has been removed from the production environment and is no longer accessible.
Environment The enterprise environment where a specific capability is instantiated. For purposes of this library, two environments are documented:
(1) The Navy and Marine Corps Intranet (NMCI) for CONUS
(2) OCONUS Navy Enterprise Network (ONE-Net) for OCONUS
| Region | A region is a subdividion of the enterprise. Regions only exists within the ONE-Net environment and may have unique customizations of deployed capabilities tailored to a specific region. If a capability is unique to a specific region, or a capability exists within multiple regions with unique, individualized customizations, then that capability will be recorded as a separate line entry within the library and annotated with a "one-to-one" association between a specific region and a specific customization/version of the software capability deployed. |
| Industry Category | A commonly understood set of software categories used within industry: |
Customer Support Software - Assistance in planning, installation, training, troubleshooting, maintenance, upgrading, and disposal of a product.
Development Software - Computer programming, documenting, testing, and bug fixing involved in creating and maintaining applications and frameworks.
Enterprise Software - Collection of computer programs with common business applications, tools for modeling how the entire organization works, and development tools for building applications unique to the organization.
Finance and Accounting Software - Records and processes accounting transactions within functional modules such as accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, payroll, and trial balance.
Human Resources Software - Combines human resources functions, including benefits administration, payroll, recruiting and training, and performance analysis and review into one package.
Information Technology Software - Use of systems and software for storing, retrieving, and sending information.
Marketing Software - Designed for marketing departments and organizations to more effectively market on multiple channels online such as email, social media, websites for repetitive task automation.
Professional Services Software - Assistance with professional services information, processes, and procedures that require holding professional licenses such as architects, auditors, engineers, doctors and lawyers.
Sales Software - Records when goods or services are sold to customers usually included on cash registers at retail locations to record the sale and direct it to the proper tracking system.
Vertical-Specific Software - Aimed at addressing the needs of any given business within a discernible vertical market specific industry or market and readily identifiable by the application specific graphical user interface which defines it.
| Industry Recognized Capability | A specific type of software capability associated within an industry software category. Detailed defintions for specific software capability types are provided within the "Industry Categorization FAQ" tab. |
| ITIL Service Alignment | The service that the identified capability best aligns to within ITIL v3 Framework of Services. |
Service Strategy - The center and origin point of the ITIL Service Lifecycle. It provides guidance on clarification and prioritization of service-provider investments in services. More generally, Service Strategy focuses on helping IT organizations improve and develop over the long term.
Service Design - The activity of planning and organizing people, infrastructure, communication and material components of a service in order to improve its quality and the interaction between the service provider and its customers.
Service Transition - To build and deploy IT services. The Service Transition lifecycle stage also makes sure that changes to services and service management processes are carried out in a coordinated way.
Service Operations - To make sure that IT services are delivered effectively and efficiently. The Service Operation lifecycle stage includes the fulfilling of user requests, resolving service failures, fixing problems, as well as carrying out routine operational tasks.
Service Functions - A novel concept and is particularly relevant for industrial firms that offer services. It highlights the fact that it is erroneous to equate services with the activities of the service organization. Instead, a more holistic approach to the management of service offerings is needed.
Continual Service Improvement - To continually align and re-align IT services to the changing business needs by identifying and implementing improvements to IT services that support business processes. CSI looks for ways to improve process effectiveness, efficiency and cost effectiveness.
| ITIL Process Alignment | The process owner within a particular service considered to be accountable for the governance of the identified capability. The accountable process owner is considered to be the primary user of the data developed by the identified capability and is responsible for that capability's governance. There can only be one process owner identified as "acountable" for an identified capability. Other process owners may have a dependency on the data produced by the capabilty; however, their relationship would be identified as "responsible", "consulted" or "informed." |
| Description | Provides information on the salient features of the capability. It addresses how it is used, operated and maintained. |
Additionally, the description should address what data the capability produces and how to consume it.
| Purpose | Provides insight into the itended use of the identified capability. |
| Aligned Technical Data Artifacts (Documents) | Provides an indexed filename listing of related technical documentation consisting of artifacts addressing design, architecture, installation, maintenance, use, policy, procedure, etc. Examples of artifact types are diagrams, DEV 400 series documents, DODAF views, presentations, etc. |
| Independant Government Assessment Status | Provides status of the tools assessment report for each capability on the NMCI and ONE-Net network resulting from the Directed Assessment (DA) of the current tools residing on the NMCI and ONE-NET network. |
