System Description The AN/SPN-43C Radar Set is an Air Search Radar (ASR) used for Aircraft Carrier and Amphibious Assault Ship Air Traffic Control. It is used on LHA, LHD, and CVN class ships.
It provides 360 degree Air Search out to 60 NMI with altitude coverage from radar horizon to 30,000 feet.
Air Traffic Controllers use the SPN-43 video displayed on the AN/TPX-42 consoles to guide aircraft to the landing approach path once the aircraft is within radar range. The aircraft is transitioned to a precision Approach Radar for final approach to touchdown.

Bring‘em Back Alive Future SPN-43C ATC Requirements Last Nimitz class carrier (CVN 77) George H.W. Bush was commissioned January 2009, potential for 45 years of support
LHA-Class ships are still being built and require the SPN-43C. With LHA-8 delivery in 2022, the potential is for 40+ years of support.

Bring‘em Back Alive Other Features Circular Polarization: The AN/SPN–43C radar antenna includes a polarizer assembly to enable the operator to select either linear or circular polarization mode. Circular polarization is used to reduce the limiting effects of rain backscatter.
A LOG IF channel is used as an aid in tracking targets through clutter and precipitation.
Blanking Triggers momentarily disable the receiver during the transmit time of the other shipboard radar.
Additional capabilities of the radar include fast time constant (FTC) and sensitivity time control (STC) features, which enhance tracking of targets through large blocks of signal or clutter appearing on the display. FTC also aids in tracking aircraft through precipitation; STC reduces display saturation from sea– return at close ranges.

Bring‘em Back Alive AN/SPN-43C Interfaces Radar Video Analog video and azimuth triggers are provided to the RADDS switchboard. TPX-42 pulls SPN-43 video from RADDS and aligns it with IFF data.
Stabilization Input Current antenna pedestal receives Synchro data input at 400 Hz, 2X and 36X for pitch and roll correction.
Synchro data source from Ship's gyrocompass equipment or equivalent 60 Hz to correct for ship's heading Future systems will receive digital ships motion data through the NAVSSI/NAVCRIT network
Bring‘em Back Alive Analog Video This is a TPX-42 display showing SPN-43 radar return. The display shows only a moderate amount of clutter, but is difficult to use to track aircraft. Weather and ducting can cover much more screen area.
