About this file
This is a technical specification section for metal ducts in HVAC systems, specifically Section 233113 from a construction specification standard.
The specification covers single-wall round ducts and fittings constructed of galvanized sheet steel with G90 coating designation and mill phosphatized finishes for exposed surfaces. All ducts must comply with SMACNA's "HVAC Duct Construction Standards - Metal and Flexible" for fabrication, assembly, and installation. Duct dimensions referenced on drawings represent inside clear dimensions excluding insulation and wall thickness. Supply ducts connected to constant-volume air-handling units must achieve positive 2-inch water gauge pressure class with SMACNA Seal Class C minimum, leakage class 16 for rectangular ducts and 8 for round and flat oval ducts. Supply-air ducts require 1-inch-thick fibrous glass Type I liner with adhesive coverage of at least 90 percent at liner contact surfaces. Transverse joints, longitudinal seams, tees, and laterals must be fabricated per SMACNA standards based on static-pressure class and sealing requirements. Sealants must be water-based or solvent-based with specific performance characteristics including maximum flame-spread index of 25 and smoke-developed index of 50 per UL 723. Duct hangers and supports must comply with SMACNA standards, with spacing not exceeding 24 inches from elbows and 48 inches from branch intersections. Vertical ducts require support at each floor and maximum intervals of 16 feet using steel angles or channels. Round elbows must achieve minimum radius-to-diameter ratio of 1.5, with stamped or pleated construction for 12-inch and smaller diameters and standing seam construction for 14-inch and larger diameters.
