8. ASSEMBLY.
8.1 Fuel Atomizer Assembly. Assemble fuel
atomizer assembly as follows:
a. Install fuel check valve (Figure 2, 5) with packings (6 and 7) into body assembly (8).
Torque fuel check valve 65 to 70 inch-pounds.
b. Install key washer (4) with tang positioned in slot in body assembly (8), then install nozzle assembly (3). Torque nozzle assembly (3) 70 to 80 inch-pounds.
c. Bend tab of key washer (4) to secure nozzle assembly (3).
9. TESTING
Bench test nozzle assembly (Figure 2) and fuel check valve (5) as follows:
9.1 Preparation for Testing. Prepare for testing
as follows:
a. Install test fixture X9298697-10 onto test stand 164101-100.
b. Install fuel atomizer assembly into test fixture X9298697-10. The test stand shall use filtered MIL-C-7024 Type II Calibration fluid provided at 80 ± 5°F.
c. If testing a newly assembled nozzle, apply fuel pressure up to the highest pressure value on Table 3 for given part number atomizer assembly until fluid flows from nozzle. If no flow is achieved at highest pressure, replace check valve (5).
9.2 Leak Check. Perform leak check as follows:
a. Operate test equipment at pressures specified for given atomizer assembly and check valve part numbers in Table 2.
b. Apply fluid leak test pressure in accordance with Table 2 for atomizer assembly and check valve part numbers being tested. Maintain pressure for required time in Table 2. No leakage allowed.
c. If valve leaks, replace packings (Figure 2, 6 and 7 – continued) and retest. If leakage is still observed, reject fuel check valve (5).
9.3 Crack Pressure Test. Perform crack pressure
check as follows:
a. After leak check slowly increase pressure insuring the check valve cracks at the pressure specified in Table 2 for the corresponding check valve part number.
b. Increase the pressure past the crack pressure to the check flow pressure in Table 2 for the corresponding check valve part number and ensure the minimum flow is met.
c. If the crack pressure or minimum flow fails to meet the specifications in Table 2, reject the check valve.
9.4 Spray Angle and Flow Test. Perform spray
angle and flow test as follows
a. Apply fluid inlet pressures according to Table 3 for the atomizer assembly part number being tested. At each inlet pressure check that the flow rate and spray angle requirements in Table 3 are met.
b. Observe the spray pattern at each inlet pressure. Spray pattern shall be finely divided droplets in the form of a fully developed cone. Patterns A, B, and C (Figure 5) represent acceptable patterns.
Bubbling or back flowing on the face of the nozzle assembly tip (pattern D) and discontinuities (patterns E and F) are not acceptable.
c. Angle of spray shall be measured at a radius of 1 inch from the apex of the developed spray cone. The developed spray cone shall be concentric with the centerline of the nozzle as specified in Figure 6.
Table 2. Leak and Check Valve Test Values
Note: Make sure not to overshoot pressure values. If a pressure value in a column is overshot, decrease pressure back down to the previous column and proceed.

10. FINAL ASSEMBLY AND PACKING
10.1 Final Assembly. Final Assembly of fuel
atomizer assembly shall proceed as follows:
a. Install packing (2) and shroud (1) to fuel atomizer assembly body (8).
10.2 Packing. Package fuel atomizer assembly as
follows:
a. If fuel atomizer assembly is to be installed in JFS within 60 days, no oil dip is required, simply place unit in a plastic bag.
b. If fuel atomizer assembly is destined for storage in excess of 60 days, dip fuel atomizer assembly in clean lubricating oil, Specification MIL-L-6081, Grade 1010.
c. Drain and place unit in a plastic bag.
