5. TESTING.

WARNING

Do not operate test set assembly at floor level or in hazardous environment, as test set assembly is not explosion proof. Test set assembly shall be operated at bench level (approximately 29 inches above floor level).

NOTE

Testing shall be accomplished prior to disassembly and after reassembly of repaired fuel nozzle assembly.

a. Leak Test.

(1) Provide test stand assembly and nozzle tester or test setup as shown in Figure 2 and using instruments to measure quantities specified in Table 3. Provide calibration fluid (12-18) at 75 to 85°F (24 to 29°C).

(2) Install a packing (3612610-1) on the fuel nozzle assembly and install fuel nozzle assembly into adapter 296505-1 (modified to accommodate bolts MS9565-06). Secure with three bolts (MS9565-06). Torque to 60-70 inch-pounds.

(3) Install a suitable cap on fuel nozzle assembly. Ensure cap is tight.

(4) Connect test stand (figure T1, item 1) assembly to adapter and ensure all connections are tight.

WARNING

Test procedures require the application of fluid under high pressures. Be sure all equipment is securely mounted, use safety shields at all times during testing and reduce pressure to zero before disconnecting any equipment. Failure to comply can result in injury to personnel.

(5) Using test stand assembly slowly apply 23 to 27 psig pressure to adapter.

(6) Check fuel nozzle assembly for leakage. No leakage allowed.

(7) Using test stand assembly, slowly apply 98 to 102 psig pressure to adapter.

(8) Check fuel nozzle assembly for leakage. No leakage allowed.

(9) Using test stand assembly, slowly apply 198 to 202 psig pressure to adapter.

(10) Check fuel nozzle assembly for leakage. No leakage allowed.

(11) Using test stand assembly, slowly apply 298 to 302 psig to adapter.

(12) Check fuel nozzle assembly for leakage. No leakage allowed.

(13) Using test stand assembly, slowly apply 348 to 352 psig pressure to adapter.

(14) Check fuel nozzle assembly for leakage. No leakage allowed.

(15) Using test stand assembly, reduce pressure to adapter.

(16) Ensure no pressure is in line to adapter and remove connecting hose assembly from adapter. Remove cap from inlet connection of fuel nozzle assembly.

(17) Remove bolts securing fuel nozzle assembly to adapter. Remove fuel nozzle assembly.

(18) Replace fuel nozzle assembly if requirements are not met.

b. Fuel Flow Rate Test

Flow rate test and spray pattern test can be performed simultaneously.

(1) Install fuel nozzle assembly into adapter 293010-1 and secure in position with clamp.

Ensure fuel nozzle assembly is secure and in position.

(2) Connect fuel inlet line to fuel nozzle assembly.

(3) Connect pressure hose assembly from test stand to nozzle tester.

Do not apply air pressure at this time.

(4) Connect air source to air connection on adapter, but do not apply air.

Measure fuel pressure within 3 inches of fuel nozzle assembly.

Flow divider valve opening is distinguished by thickening spray pattern

(5) Using test stand assembly, measure and record flow rate through fuel nozzle assembly in accordance with Table 4. Refer to disassembly if requirements are not met.

c. Spray Pattern Test

(1) Apply spray pattern test pressure in accordance with Table 4.

(2) At each condition, observe spray pattern angle. Each condition shall meet or exceed shown in Table 4 and patterns A, B, C shown in Figure 3.

(3) There shall be no dribbling, streaking or discontinuities as shown in patterns D, E, and F.

(i) If conditions D, E, or F exist, use a nylon bristle tooth brush and carefully rub the tip of the nozzle (38117) to scrub off any contaminants. If streaking, dribbling, or discontinuities still exist, replace nozzle tip (38117).

d. Flow Divider Valve Opening Pressure Test.

(1) Set fuel inlet pressure at 150 psig with airblast/differential pressure of 0.0-inch H2O.

(2) Increase inlet pressure while observing spray pattern.

(3) Valve opening pressure shall be 160 to 170 psig inlet pressure with a thickening of spray pattern. As pressure increases, a slight change in spray angle is acceptable.

(4) There shall be no spitting, bubbling or dual spray cones.

(5) Decrease pressure to 25 psig. Observe spray patterns are satisfactory in accordance with

Figure 3.

(6) Reduce pressure to zero and remove adapter assembly and fuel nozzle assembly from nozzle tester.

(7) Remove fuel nozzle assembly from adapter 293010-1.

(8) Disconnect attaching hose from inlet of fuel nozzle assembly.

(9) Unlock clamp securing fuel nozzle assembly to adapter. If required, remove adapter from nozzle tester.

(10) Drain fuel nozzle assembly, cap and cover all openings. Place in an enclosed covering.

(11) If required, remove pressure and return hose assemblies from test stand assembly to nozzle tester. Cover all openings.
