9. TESTING.

a. Preparation for Test.

WARNING

Calibration fuel is flammable; do not use near open flames, liquid contact with eyes or skin can cause severe irritation and blurred vision. Inhalation of vapor can cause irritation, headache, nausea, and dizziness. Wear approved PPE when exposed to vapors.

NOTE

Refer to TO 33D2-3-106-1 for operation and maintenance of 164101-100 test stand assembly.

Prior to start of all tests, all valves shall be open and regulators adjusted to zero.

(1) Provide test setup as shown in Figure 3 or connect X8750322-01 tester assembly to 164101-100 test stand assembly.

(2) Provide a test record sheet, see Table 3, to record results of test procedures.

(3) Install fuel atomizer assembly on X8750322-01 tester assembly.

(4) Provide filtered calibration fuel (43-21) at an inlet temperature of 80 (±5)°F (26 (±3)°C).

b. Leak Check

(1) Provide 3 (±1) psig inlet fuel pressure to bleed air from system.

(2) Apply 350 (±10) psig inlet fuel pressure.

(3) Check fuel atomizer assembly for leakage. No leakage permitted from flow divider valve (Figure 2,9) or housing

(11).

Figure 4: Fuel Atomizer Assembly Spray Pattern

c. Perform 10 psig Spray Pattern Check.

(1) Apply 10 (±1) psig inlet pressure.

(2) There shall be no fizzing or bubbling (Figure 4, Pattern D), solid jets of fuel (pattern F), or discontinuities (pattern

E) in the spray pattern.

(3) Replace matched plate set (Figure 2, 3) or distributor head (4) if spray pattern is unacceptable and retest.

d. Perform 25 psig Spray Pattern Check.

(1) Apply 25 (±1) psig inlet fuel pressure.

(2) There shall be no fizzing or bubbling (Figure 4, Pattern D), solid jets of fuel (pattern F), or discontinuities (pattern

E) in the spray pattern.

(3) Flow spray angle and weight flow rate shall be within limits of Table 3.

(4) Check and calculate spray angle concentricity.

(a) Using protractor (Figure 3, 11) establish centerline of 90 degrees.

(b) At 1 inch from nozzle tip (Figure 5, RAD Q), measure ANGLE R and ANGLE T.

(c) Each angle measured from centerline shall compare within 3 degrees.

(d) Fuel atomizer assembly is unacceptable if flow spray angle or weight flow rate is not within limits of

Table 3.

(5) Replace plate set (Figure 2, 8) or distributor head (Figure 2, 9) if flow spray angle is not within limits of Table 3 or spray pattern is unacceptable and retest.

e. Flow Divider Valve Opening Check.

NOTE

Flow divider valve opening is distinguished by a general thickening of spray pattern.

(1) Adjust fuel inlet pressure to 5 psig (±1) below flow divider pressure shown in Table 3, as indicated on inlet fuel pressure gage (8). Gradually increase pressure to 10 (±2) psig above opening pressure. Check for opening of flow divider valve. Valve opening shall occur within limits of Table 3.

(2) Decrease fuel inlet pressure to 25 psig (±1) Recheck flow rate specified in Table 3 to ensure that flow divider valve has closed.

(3) Replace flow divider valve (Figure 2, 9) if opening pressure is not within limits of Table 3.

Figure 5: Fuel Atomizer Assembly Spray Angles

f. Perform 200 Psig Spray Pattern Check.

(1) Apply 200 (±2) psig fuel inlet pressure. There shall be no fizzing or bubbling (Figure 4, Pattern D), solid jets of fuel

(pattern F), or discontinuities (pattern E) in the spray pattern. An acceptable pattern is pattern C.

(2) Weight flow rate and flow spray angle shall be within the limits of Table 3.

(3) Check and calculate spray angle concentricity.

(a) Using 180 degree protractor (Figure 3, 11) establish centerline of 90 degrees.

Table 3.

(4) Replace matched plate set (Figure 2, 3) or distributor head (4) if flow spray angle or weight flow rate is not within limits of Table 3 or if spray pattern is unacceptable. Retest if any replacements are made.

g. Perform 350 Psig Spray Pattern Check.

(1) Apply 350 (±2) psig fuel inlet pressure.

Table 3.

(4) Replace matched plate set (Figure 2, 3) or distributor head (4) if flow spray angle or weight flow rate is not within limits of Table 3 or if spray pattern is unacceptable. Retest if any replacements are made.

(5) Remove inlet pressure and disconnect X8750322-01 tester assembly. Remove fuel atomizer assembly from tester assembly.

(6) Drain duel atomizer assembly completely.

(7) Inspect atomizer housing (Figure 2, 11) for proper atomizer assembly part number. If part number is correct, proceed to next step. If part number is incorrect, vibro-etch a single line through the incorrect part number no more than 0.010 inch deep. Vibro-etch the correct assembly part number on a non-functional surface of the housing (figure 2, 11) using 1/8 inch high characters no deeper than 0.010 inch. Use Alodine (43-15) to touch up etched areas.

(8) Plug or cap all openings.

h. Preservation

Preserve and package fuel atomizer assembly in accordance with Specification MIL-STD-2073, Method 10.
