About this file
This document is an instructional exhibit prepared by the National Cemetery Administration detailing standard procedures for preplaced crypt (PPC) wall field repairs at national cemeteries. The exhibit, dated June 24, 2021 and authored by Andrew J. Walters, PE Specialist with the Cemetery Development & Improvement Service, provides step-by-step guidance for addressing structural damage to crypt walls while maintaining structural integrity and functionality. The document specifies that repairs are not permitted on exterior walls along preplaced crypt field edges or on walls bordering irrigation aisles. Prior to initiating any repairs, photographs of damaged crypts with their field locations must be submitted to the NCA Crypt Specialist for approval. Damaged crypts that cannot be repaired must be replaced in accordance with specified procedures outlined in earlier slides.
The repair process detailed in the exhibit includes removal of debris and loose material, installation of epoxy-secured screws using drill equipment, formwork installation, pouring of high-strength concrete mix, and form removal. The document notes that the most common crypt damage results from vehicle traffic over crypt lids during backfilling operations and pea gravel installation into gaps. While minor cracks are addressed separately, the procedures outlined address major cracking that maintains structural integrity and functionality. The typical concrete mix specifications are referenced for the pouring phase of the repair work, establishing standardized construction requirements for field repairs at veterans' cemeteries under National Cemetery Administration oversight.
