About this file

This document is a technical record and schematic documentation of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Water Collection System, prepared by the National Park Service as part of the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) project. The documentation includes historical maps, process schematics, and detailed architectural drawings dated 2008, with some materials reformatted from 1993 engineering records.

The water collection system is essential infrastructure for the park due to the pervious lava rock terrain that prevents groundwater retention. Water is collected from two rainsheds (Buildings 241 and 43) and two lined ground catchments (CGI and CG2) before being processed through a treatment facility that includes roughing filters, slow sand filters, a clearwell, and chlorinators. The system incorporates multiple storage components: two 750,000-gallon glass-lined bolted steel raw water tanks (formerly used redwood tanks), a 500,000-gallon finished welded steel tank, and lined ground catchments totaling 128,878 and 51,000 square feet respectively. Water flows through gravity feed from raw water tanks to the treatment facility, then is pumped to finished water tanks for distribution to park buildings via gravity feed. The system also accommodates water redistribution to various tanks and tanker truck loading, with a 200-gallon-per-minute truck unloading, circulation, and recirculation pump located under a rainshed. Building 43 is a 40,228-square-foot rainshed constructed with corrugated metal roofing and siding, wood framing with wood wall and brick panel sections, and interior partitions for equipment storage and maintenance access.
