EW EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE
26 AUGUST 2020
Contractor shall complete the following preventative maintenance weekly or monthly as described to keep the mechanical condition of the deck equipment in good working order.
Multi-Purpose Craft (MPC-1) Threat Simulator System
A. INTRODUCTION
This document is a Preventive Maintenance Procedures (PMP) for the Multi-Purpose Craft (MPC) and Maritime Threat Simulator System (MTSS). The maintenance procedures performed on the MPC system by maintenance personnel are described in this section. The repair of most main electronic components shall be completed by the Depot, Airborne Threat Simulation Division, Pt. Mugu, CA.
B. SCOPE
1. Visual Inspection and Maintenance
a. Weekly
b. Monthly
C. SAFETY SUMMARY
The following are general safety precautions that are not related to any specific procedures, and therefore do not appear elsewhere in this procedure. These are recommended precautions that personnel must understand and apply during the many phases of operation.
1. KEEP AWAY FROM LIVE CIRCUITS
Operating personnel must observe all safety regulations at all times. Do not replace components inside the equipment when potentially lethal voltages are present. Turn off system power before making or breaking electrical connections. Regard any exposed connector, terminal board, or circuit board as a possible shock hazard. To avoid casualties, always remove power, discharge, and ground a circuit before touching it.
2. DO NOT SERVICE OR ADJUST ALONE
Personnel shall not, under any circumstances, reach into or enter any enclosure for the purpose of servicing or adjusting the equipment without the immediate presence or assistance of another person capable of rendering aid.
D. PERSONNEL REQUIREMENT
1. Visual Inspection.
1.1 Weekly - 2 persons, 1 hour
1.2 Monthly - 2 persons, 2 hours
E. SAFETY HAZARD WARNINGS
The Maritime Threat Simulator (MTS) Radio Frequency (RF) output level is hazardous to personnel and electro explosive devices when radiating into free space. The RF Radiation Hazard Zone (RADHAZ) for personnel and ordnance is 50 feet up to +/- 60 degrees in Azimuth and 50 feet -10 to +90 degrees in Elevation from each pedestal center line as shown in Figure
1. All personnel who operate or maintain the system must be familiar with the RADHAZ for both personnel and ordnance.
Additional information on the RF hazard to personnel and ordnance can be found in NAVSEA OP 3565, NAVAIR 16-1-529, NAVELEX 0967-LP-624-6010, or NAWCADLKE-MISC-05-SR- 0066.
F. VISUAL INSPECTION OF PORT (J-BAND) AND STARBOARD (I-BAND)
PEDESTALS.
NOTE: Ensure all the equipment on the racks and the EW circuit breaker are OFF before proceeding with the following procedures (see Figures 2 and 3).
Weekly Maintenance.
a. Remove and clean the interlock pedestal pins with alcohol, swabs, and/or steel wool (see Figure 4). Return pedestal pins back into place when done.
b. Perform fresh water wash down of external components.
c. Clean camera enclosure lens prior to each EW mission or if not used.
d. Notify COR if any anomalies are found or observed via email.
Monthly Maintenance.
a. Inspect external cables for cracking, wear and corrosion.
b. Inspect external waveguides for dents, signs of burning, charring, discoloration, fraying, cuts, wear and corrosion.
c. Inspect all external wiring and waveguide for missing components, loose components or possible entanglement of wires during pedestal movement.
d. Inspect all watertight seals for obvious damage.
e. Inspect interlocking connection ports. Clean with alcohol and cotton swabs as needed.
f. Inspect camera (see Figure 5):
i. Inspect to ensure the camera enclosure is secure in mounting bracket and tighten it as needed.
ii. Inspect and clean camera housing lens as needed.
g. Inspect exterior of pedestal control box for cracking, wear, and/or deterioration which may allow water intrusion (see Figures 6 and 7).
h. Inspect pedestal painted surfaces for chipped paint or exposed surface.
i. Inspect pedestal/antenna for air leaks.
j. Inspect waveguide for cracking, debris, air leaks, or corrosion.
k. Inspect pedestal surface for corrosion.
l. Inspect cable assembly clamps for deteriorated, loose, or missing parts.
m. Inspect wiring for damaged insulation or loose terminals.
n. Inspect cables for damaged casing, kinks, or excessive bends.
o. Inspect connectors for damaged contacts.
p. Inspect bonding straps for broken or missing parts.
Notify COR using Monthly inspection logging sheet (via email attachment) that all aforementioned maintenance is complete and report any unsatisfactory conditions and anomalies found.
