C. Design Guidelines:

o Air Distribution Sizing, Duct and Louvers design Guidelines:

o Provide low pressure system ductwork and plenums where maximum air velocity is 2000 feet per minute (FPM) and maximum static pressure is 2 inches water gage (wg), positive or negative.

o Low Pressure Duct Sizing (Pressure class 2” WG and less) Supply: Maximum Pressure Drop: 0.1”/100ft Maximum Velocity: 1,600 fpm Return/General Exhaust: Maximum Pressure Drop: 0.1”/100ft Maximum Velocity: 1,600 fpm High Pressure Duct Sizing (Greater than pressure class 2” WG) Supply: Maximum Pressure Drop: 0.15”/100ft Maximum Velocity: 2,000 fpm o Some guidelines to determine maximum airflow velocity to use in selected applications of low velocity systems:

Application Velocity Residences 600 fpm

Theatres, Churches, Auditoriums 800 fpm Apartments, Hotel rooms 1000 fpm

Offices, Libraries 1200 fpm Stores, Restaurants, Banks 1500 fpm

Cafeteria 1800 fpm o Commonly accepted duct velocities are indicated in the table below:

Service Velocity

Public Buildings Industrial Buildings fpm fpm

Air intake from outside 500 - 900 1000 - 1200 Heater connection to fan 700 - 900 1000 - 1400

Mechanical Guidelines o D u c t system o Duct systems shall be designed using radius elbows with turning vanes wherever possible.

Branch takeoffs shall be designed with conical fittings or 45-degree entry taps.

o Design and size ductwork systems using latest SMACNA and ASHRAE criteria for velocities and fitting losses. Do not oversize ductwork unnecessarily to avoid performing sound calculations. Duct layouts should be optimized to perform within acceptable criteria at the lowest reasonable installed cost. The use of underground ducts for general comfort conditioning is prohibited, except for sub slab soil exhaust systems which are allowed.

o Flexible duct is preferred at connections from branch to supply diffusers and grilles when possible in design. Maximum length of flexible duct shall not exceed 5 feet. Do not use flexible duct for offsets greater than 45 degrees or connections to diffusers registers or grilles greater than 45 degrees.

o Manual balance dampers shall be shown at each major branch takeoff and at run outs to diffusers and grilles of supply, return, and exhaust ductwork. Locate balance dampers back from diffusers and grilles as far as possible to reduce damper generated noise. Avoid the use of registers in grilles wherever possible.

o Provide manual volume dampers for all main and branch ducts; these should include all supply, return, and exhaust ducts. Do not use splitter dampers or air extractors for air balancing. Provide opposed blade manual balancing damper for outside air. Indicate opposed blade manual balancing dampers for both the main supply and return duct and the main relief duct on all return air fans; dampers must be in close proximity to the automatic return and relief dampers.

o Transfer ducts shall be sized for a duct velocity of 300 to 500 fpm.

o Outside air intake louvers and intake hoods shall be installed so that the bottom of the intake is a minimum of 30” above the finished roof level, grade, or bottom of areaway. For buildings adjacent to public roadways, locate intake louvers above the first-floor level, on the roof, away from the roadways to prevent contamination of the air whenever possible.

Main supply ducts 1000 - 1500 1200 - 2400 Branch supply ducts 500 - 600 900 - 1800

Supply registers and grilles 250 - 450 350 - 500 Low level supply registers 150 - 250 -

Main extract ducts 900 - 1500 1200 - 2400 Branch extract ducts 500 - 600 900 - 1800

Mechanical Guidelines o Arrange intake louvers and associated duct connections to get even air velocities across entire louver area. Design louvers for the following maximum velocities across louvers’ free area: 400 fpm for intake louvers on systems with over 75% minimum outside air. 500 fpm for intake louvers on constant volume systems with outside air economizer. 500 fpm for intake louvers on variable air volume systems with outside air economizer.

o For Variable air volume; do not oversize the system. Do not add safety factors in the load calculations. Size all central air handling equipment and central plant equipment for “block” loads. Design for both peak and part load UFC 3-410-01 1 conditions (minimal wall transmission load, low occupancy, etc.). Submit part load design calculations. Verify proper fan operating characteristics throughout the range from the minimum to the maximum flow conditions that will be experienced.

o VRF Systems: VRF are not permitted unless it is specifically requested by JBA or when no other suitable option is available and approved by JBA PM. Since systems from different manufacturers require different mechanical designs, provide a design with necessary design allowances to permit multiple manufacturers to meet the design. For example, piping designs differ between VRF manufacturers so do not require specific VRF piping design, but rather indicate where piping may be installed.

o Design requirements for VRF system:

1. VRF systems must meet the control system specifications.

2. Provide a stand-by outdoor unit when VRF system is utilized.

3. The design must not preclude competition between vendors: a. Since VRF systems from different manufacturers require different mechanical designs, provide a design with necessary design allowances to permit multiple manufacturers to meet the design. For example, piping designs differ between VRF manufacturers so do not require specific VRF piping design, but rather indicate where piping may be installed. b. Edit project specifications and requirements to include contractor design drawings as additional pre-construction drawing SD-02 Shop Drawing submittals. These drawings must document the details of the VRF design, including but not limited to piping layout.

4. Designs must require that the system be configured and installed strictly in accordance with the manufacturer’s installation requirement.

5. Include and require refrigerant line vibration isolation at all connections to motorized equipment, including but not limited to the refrigerant line connections at each fan coil unit.

6. VRF systems piping/tubing must have all brazed connections that meet ASME B31.5 requirements and the manufacturer’s installation requirements. The list of fittings and joints that are prohibited include but are not limited to the following: push-on fittings, extruded fittings, flare fittings, press-connect fittings, mechanical joints and groove joints. The VRF system must be pressure tested and vacuum tested.

7. VRF systems must be provided to meet ASHRAE 15 and IMC safety requirements pertaining to leakage to rooms and spaces. Calculations must be performed per IAW ASHRAE 15 and IMC and must be provided to demonstrate these requirements are met.

Mechanical Guidelines

8. The total refrigerant charge of the independent VRF system must be 49-lbs or less. (See APPENDIX B for more information on EPA regulation and refrigerant leakage concerns.)

o For systems using a dedicated outdoor air handler for ventilation air directly connected to a VAV air handler, provide controls to ensure ventilation air requirements are maintained over all load conditions.

o In all new design/ construction projects HVAC control system shall be tied into JBA management system EMCS.

o Chilled and Heating Hot Water Pipe Sizing Guidelines:

Pipe Sizing shall be based on maximum pressure drop of 4 ft/100 ft, and a maximum velocity of 10 fps for piping up to 14” diameter, and a maximum velocity of 12.5 fps for piping 16” diameter and larger.

All pipe sizes shall be designed in accordance with the latest version of ASHRAE Standard 90.1 entitled “Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings” and applicable Building Code requirements.

o Equipment selection:

Equipment sizing and selection shall comply with the following:

o Sizing shall take into consideration a safety factor for load calculations.

o A possibility of future expansion.

o The capability of the equipment to operate at part load.

o The possibility of utilizing emergency power.

o The possibility for equipment redundancy.

o Dimension and weight of the equipment especially for renovated projects.

o Maintenance clearance required.

o For renovation projects equipment maintenance shall be identified whether it will be maintained under an existing maintenance or shall have a new contract.
