WATER SYSTEM WATER SUPPLY DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION
SECTION 331111
WATER SUPPLY DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 SUMMARY
A. This Section includes engineering design services and construction of a new solar powered potable water system supply utilizing a new well water source
(not in contract), water treatment, and treatment building including: solar powered well pump, drop pipe, wiring, pitless adapter, and sanitary well cap;
solar panels, poles and foundations, Government furnished treatment building, treatment building plumbing, chlorinator, control panels and appurtenances;
potable water storage tank and appurtenances; any other related appurtenances for a complete and operable system.
1.2 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
A. Water Storage:
1. Provide 3 days of treated water supply in case of insufficient sunlight to meet campground demand.
2. Storage tank shall meet all State and Federal regulations for the storage of potable water.
3. Storage tank shall be designed for and installed underground with above ground vent, access manway with lockable, shoebox type lid with water tight seal, tank drain to daylight, separate fill and drain lines and perimeter drain.
B. Treatment Building:
1. Install a self contained battery operated/solar recharging light and remote switch to be installed inside the building. Light shall have a minimum run time of 60 minutes per charge.
C. Water Treatment:
1. Provide sufficient water treatment to meet State and Federal regulations.
2. Provide sufficient water treatment for 4-log inactivation of viruses through chlorination.
3. Chlorinator shall be an electric positive displacement pump suitable for injecting chlorine under pressure and powered by solar panels or batteries recharged by solar panels.

D. Solar panels, pole, supports and hardware:
1. All exposed fasteners and connectors shall be vandal resistant.
2. All components shall be designed for the appropriate snow and wind loads.
3. Solar panels shall be mounted a minimum of 20’ above existing ground.
E. Controls
1. Control panels shall provide fully automatic operation of submersible pump and tank fill.
2. Control panel shall provide for manual override of pump on/off.
3. Chlorinator shall operate only when well pump is running and shall be controlled in a manner that provides a constant chlorine residual in the treated water.
F. Minimum Working Pressures: The following are minimum pressure requirements for water hydrants, unless otherwise indicated:
1. Potable Water Service: 15 psig.
G. Construction Documents:
1. Provide construction documents for the portion of the work to be designed including: drawings, specifications, schedule of items and cost estimates for those items.
2. All design work shall be completed by or under the direction of a
Registered Professional Engineer.
H. Design Documents:
1. All calculations and drawings shall bear an engineering stamp.
1.3 SUBMITTALS
A. Product data which shows compliance with the reference standards for the following:
1. Pipe and fittings
2. Compression couplings for similar and dissimilar pipes
3. Submersible pump
4. Solar panels, posts and supports
5. Electrical wires and control cables
6. Control panels
7. Tank level controls
8. Chlorinator Pump and Solution Tank
9. Water Meter

10. Water Storage Tank, Manway, and Lid
B. Preliminary Design Documents:
1. Initial conceptual drawings showing the key design components with the proposed design materials and preliminary cost estimates shall be submitted to the Forest Service for review and approval. Thereafter, provide updated documents on a weekly basis.
2. A 50% design review of the complete construction documents, cost data, and design calculations is required. The time required for the Forest
Service to review any of the Contractor’s submittals will not exceed 10 working days. Submit 3 copies of required documents – the Government will review the Contractor’s submittals and return 1 copy of the submittals marked approved or with required changes or modifications.
3. Deliver submittals to the following locations:
a. 1 copy to: Gerardo Chavarria
Engineering
USDA Forest Service, Region 2
740 Simms Street
Golden, CO 80401
b. 2 copies to: Tom Condos, Forest Engineer
GMUG National Forest
2250 Highway 50
Delta, CO 81416
C. Final Construction Documents: Provide (3) three complete sets of construction, documents. Construction documents shall include, but not be limited to:
1. Design drawings and details on 11” x 17” paper copies and digital
AutoCAD DWG files on DVD-Rom media.
2. Schedule of Items and Cost estimates, hard copy and digital files on
DVD-Rom media, Microsoft Excel compatible
3. All necessary supporting reports, calculations and tests hard copy and digital files on DVD-Rom media (if digital copies available).
4. Project schedule including design and construction phases
5. Operational testing procedures including initial startup of system, testing control panel operation, testing float controls and well pump on/off, chlorinator adjustment, chlorine residual testing
