About this file
This document is a Pre-Renovation Asbestos Survey Report for Building N254, Room 131, conducted by ERT (Earth Resources Technology) for NASA Ames Research Center on February 21, 2018. The survey involved collecting and analyzing six bulk samples from interior and exterior surfaces, including drywall, joint compound, and stucco, to detect the presence of asbestos-containing materials (ACM). Laboratory analysis by EMSL Analytical, Inc. using polarized light microscopy (PLM) revealed that no asbestos was detected in any of the sampled materials, which means no special removal or disturbance procedures are required according to federal, state, and local governmental regulations.
The survey was performed by Norman Bautista, a California-certified Asbestos Site Surveillance Technician, at the request of John Shepardson from NASA's Occupational Safety, Health and Medical Services Division (Code QH). The work area is located in a two-story office and computer server building, and the sampling followed NASA Ames Research Center's sampling management plans and adhered to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards. The report includes detailed documentation such as sample location maps, photographs of the sampled areas, and the full analytical results and chain of custody records from the laboratory analysis.

Report Title: Pre-Renovation Asbestos Survey Report – Building N254 Room 131
(Code QH)
Author: Norman Bautista
Report Date: February 21, 2018
Location: N254
Room: Room 131
COR: Patrick Muldoon
Requester: John Shepardson
Summary This report summarizes a pre-renovation assessment of suspect asbestos containing materials (ACM) in Building 254 Room 131. Laboratory results indicate asbestos was not detected in sampled material. Removal or disturbance of sampled material does not need to be performed according to Federal, State, and Local Governmental regulations for asbestos.
Purpose As the controlling employer of a multiple employer worksite, NASA Ames Research Center (NASA ARC), represented by the NASA ARC Occupational Safety, Health and Medical Services Division (Code QH), contracted ERT to perform a limited asbestos survey of planned renovation area(s). ERT was directed to collect samples for asbestos, develop a report of the findings of the analysis and recommendations for contractor engineering controls for the planned renovation. ERT Personnel Norman Bautista, a State of California, Department of Industrial Relations, Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) Certified Asbestos Site Surveillance Technician (CSST) #13-5050 and a State of California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Certified Sampling Technician #25773 conducted this survey.
As requested by John Shepardson (Code QH), ERT conducted a limited asbestos survey of Building N254 Room 131, herein referred as the “Work Area.” This report documents background information, survey sampling methodology, analytical results, and findings and recommendations related to suspect ACM in the Work Area.
Background The Work Area is located in Building N254, a two-story office and computer server building.
Samples from the Work Area consist predominantly of drywall, joint compound, and Stucco.
Sampling for asbestos follows NASA ARC sampling management plans1 and abide by Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards 29 CFR 1910.1001(j)(8)(ii)(B).2
Method ERT collected bulk asbestos samples of suspect ACM in the Work Area. ERT submitted the samples to EMSL Lab, Inc. of San Leandro, California, an American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) accredited laboratory with National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP) Lab Code 101048-3. EMSL analyzed the samples for asbestos content according to protocols established in Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Method 600/R- 93/116 using polarized light microscopy (PLM).
Results Table 1 below summarizes information on samples collected within the Work Area. Sample locations are noted in Attachment A. Photographs of the Work Area are presented in Attachment B. Analytical results and Chain of Custody records are included in Attachment C.
