Power Factor 0.8

Speed (Maximum) 1800 rpm

1.1.3 Generator Set Size Limitations: The entire diesel generator set including all accessories mounted on a common skid shall fit into the existing dimensional envelope. The existing envelope allows for an

18 to 24 inch maintenance envelope in all directions. Diesel generator sets that exceed any of the dimensions below may not be feasible for installation on the cutter:

Length Width Height

Diesel Generator Set 147 inches 62 inches 81 inches

1.1.4 Marine Use: The diesel generator sets shall be designed and approved for marine use and have a documented service record of at least five years of operation, with at least one generator set having a documented two years or 5,000 hours of marine service. Documented service shall be for the full generator set in proposed configuration.

1.1.5 Vibration: All equipment, components, parts and accessories shall be capable of withstanding normal shipboard vibrations. All machinery and equipment units shall be designed to meet the following requirements:

1.1.5.1 Environmental Vibration: Shall meet the environmental vibration requirements as defined in MIL-STD-167-1A, Type I vibration up to and including 50 Hz. ANSI S2.26 is an acceptable alternative for MIL-STD-167-1A, Type I requirements and testing. Exception to this requirement may be allowed for equipment that has ABS Type Approval and/or been previously installed on Coast Guard, Naval, or Commercial vessels.

1.1.5.2 Internally Excited Vibration: Rotating commercial marine equipment shall meet the balance requirements of MIL-STD-167-1A, Type II. ISO 21940-11 is an acceptable alternative for MIL-STD-167-1A, Type II requirements and testing. If ISO 21940-11 is used, the generator set shall have a balance grade of G2.5, or better.

1.1.5.3 Torsional Vibration: Shall meet the torsional vibration requirements as defined in ANSI

S2.27.

3.4.3 Under short-circuit conditions, the excitation system shall be capable of maintaining a steady-state short-circuit current of at least three times the full load current for at least 2 seconds. The generator shall be capable of withstanding the mechanical and thermal stresses induced by this short-circuit current without damage or degradation. See SVR 4-8-3/3.13.2.

3.5 Voltage Control

3.5.1 The sensitivity of voltage regulators shall be ± 1% for the ship service and emergency generators.

Sensitivity represents the band or zone of voltage expressed in terms of the normal value of regulated voltage, within which the regulator will normally hold the voltage under steady load conditions and all environmental conditions without reactive droop compensation. In addition, the voltage dip upon sudden application of a two per unit impedance, 0.4 power factor load shall not exceed the limits of Type I power as defined in MIL-STD-1399, Section 103. Regulators shall employ adjustable individual droop compensation in order to provide for proper parallel operation.

3.5.2 Each voltage regulator shall be used during factory tests of its associated generator set.

3.5.3 The voltage regulation and excitation systems shall incorporate the following features:

a) Voltage regulator components, controls and switches shall be easily replaceable and shall be suitable for mounting in a drip-proof switchboard.

b) A means to manually control or adjust the generator voltage through controls installed on the switchboard. Manual regulation shall permit a degree of accuracy of + 5% and – 3%.

c) When the automatic voltage regulator is in use, operation of the manual control shall not change the regulated voltage.

3.6 Load Control

3.6.1 Under any load, power factor, rated frequency and not more than 4% reactive droop compensation, the voltage regulator shall maintain the division of reactive load among controlled generators so that the maximum difference in kvar supplied from either generator shall not exceed 6% of the continuous kvar rating of either generator.

3.7 Parallel Operation

3.7.1 Each generator shall be capable of operating continuously in parallel with any other generator at any load up to their combined maximum continuous power rating.

3.7.2 Each generator shall be capable of synchronizing with shore power and be capable of briefly operating in parallel with shore power in order to enable the transfer of the electrical load from shore to generator or generator to shore without any electrical disruptions.

3.7.3 The ratio of kW load to kW rating of any paralleled generator shall not differ from the ratio of total kW load to combined kW rating of both paralleled generators by more than 5%.

3.7.4 Synchronization shall be controlled by both manual and automatic means from the main and emergency switchboards. Paralleling shall be accomplished by manually or automatically controlling the oncoming generator's speed, voltage and phase angle to match, within required limits, that of the generator supplying the bus, then manually operating the breaker, which connects the oncoming electrical source.

3.8 Insulation Resistance

3.8.1 Insulation resistance between current-carrying conductors and ground and between current-carrying conductors of opposite polarity shall not to be less than 1 MΩ.
