About this file

This document is an Amendment (Amendment No. A008) to a Solicitation (Solicitation No. 69056724B000016) for the MT FLAP BOR 2980(1), Sun River Bridge Replacement project. The work consists of constructing a new 462-foot long, 3-span precast-post-tensioned girder bridge with precast concrete deck, new approaches, and demolition of the existing steel truss bridge (as an Option). The project is located 50 miles northwest of Augusta, MT. This amendment revises various specifications for structural concrete, including mix designs, finishing, and the use of coloring agents and structural concrete stain. It also adds requirements for ultra-high performance concrete used in the field cast closures for the precast bridge components. The solicitation is offered for full and open competition with an estimated price range between $10 million to $20 million. The tentative completion date for the project is Fall 2026.

F-17 DIVISION 550

Project: MT FLAP BOR 2980(1), Sun River Bridge Replacement

Delete the first sentence of the third paragraph and substitute the following:

Verify the mixture design through trial mixes prepared in accordance with Section 4 of ACI 301, using materials from proposed sources. Alternatively, submit previous concrete production data for the proposed mixture design using materials from the intended sources. Upon acceptance of the proposed mix design, submit a plan for review and approval to batch, transport, and place a truckload (or equivalent volume) of concrete at the project site. This demonstration will verify adherence to contract requirements for batching, transporting, and placing production concrete. If demonstration fails to comply with contract requires, repeat test as necessary.

Delete the last sentence from paragraph (l)(3) and substitute the following:

The maximum allowable design discharge time is 3½ hours unless otherwise approved by the CO.

Delete paragraph (w) and substitute the following:

(w) Specified design strength (f’

c) and required average strength (f’

cr) for the concrete mixture at 28 days as determined by the process described in Section 4 of ACI 301. This process and associated calculations are outlined on FHWA Form 1608, pages 4 and 5. Pending 28-day strength results, a mix design may be approved on the basis that 7-day compressive strength results meet or exceed 85 percent of the required average strength (f’

cr) at 28 days;

Add the following:

Add a coloring agent to provide integrally colored concrete or apply a concrete stain according to Subsection 552.16 for pay items 55201-0200, Structural Concrete, Class A(AE), 55302-2100, Precast, Prestressed Concrete Bulb Tee Girder, 74-Inch, and 55301-3500, Precast, Prestressed Concrete Slab. Add enough agent to match the Standard Color Chart Number #10059 of Federal Specification 595B once concrete has cured.

For integral colored Concrete Pprepare five square textured test panels with each panel being 12 by 12 inches (300 by 300 millimeters). Submit samples for each mix design or supplier. Determine coloring agent batch amounts by weight. The maximum amount of coloring agent is not to exceed 10 percent of the weight of the cement. Use coarse and fine aggregates and cement as delivered on the project at the job mix rates with variable quantities of coloring agent as directed by the CO.

Provide additional mixing time as recommended by the manufacturer. Give the test panels a Class 2 finish according to Subsection 552.16.

After the test panels have had at least 2 weeks exposure to sun, the CO will select a test panel to serve as a guide for the colored concrete. Use the same rate of coloring agent used in the selected panel on all relative subsequent work. Include the approved amount of coloring agent in the concrete mix design submittal.

Use an approved form release agent which will produce a minimum of staining, air holes, and hydration discoloration.

F-23 DIVISION 550

Project: MT FLAP BOR 2980(1), Sun River Bridge Replacement

(2) Brush on a mortar approved by the CO at a 1:1 cement/aggregate ratio. Add a coloring agent to provide integrally colored mortar according to Subsection 552.03.

(3) Brush on no more mortar than can be finished in 1 day;

(4) Rub the mortar with burlap or a piece of carpet as soon as it takes initial set (before it reaches final set);

(5) Fog-spray water over the finish as soon as the mortar has reached final set; and

(6) Keep the surface damp for at least 2 days.

If the mortar becomes too hard to rub as described in step (4), then rub the surface with a carborundum stone and water until form marks, projections, and irregularities are removed.

Random grinding is not permitted. Leave a uniform surface free from all unsound patches, paste, powder, and objectionable marks.

Continue with the Class 2 rubbed finish until the entire surface has a smooth texture and uniform color.

When steel forms have been used and the surface has a smooth, uniform texture and color including the surface of the filled holes, steps (1) through (6) above may be omitted with the approval of the CO.

Delete paragraph (f) and substitute the following:

(f) Class 6 – Color finish. Provide color-stained concrete finish for all concrete which will remain exposed including concrete down to 1 foot below finished ground. Provide concrete color after staining to match Standard Color Chart Number #10059 of Federal Specification 595B.

(1) Sample preparation. Prepare five square test panels, with each panel being 12 by 12 inches (300 by 300 millimeters). Allow the samples to age a minimum of 30 days.

Apply varying amounts of color stain to each sample to most closely approximate the required color.

The CO will select a test panel to serve as a guide for the concrete color/stain. Use the same mix and application of color/stain agent used in the selected panel on all relative subsequent work.

(2) Color/Stain finish. Remove all dust, foreign matter, form oil, grease, and curing compound with a 5 percent solution of trisodium phosphate and then rinse the concrete surface with clean water.

Use paper, cloth, or other means to protect surfaces not to be color finished. Apply the finish to a dry concrete surface when the surface temperature is 40 ºF or higher and the air temperature in the shade is anticipated to be 40 ºF or higher during the 24 hours following application.

F-23a

Project: MT FLAP BOR 2980(1), Sun River Bridge Replacement

Apply the color finish according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Spray, brush, or roll on the first coat of penetrating sealer and color base. Spray, brush, or roll on the finish coat after the first coat has thoroughly dried. Apply finish to provide a uniform, permanent color, free from runs and sags to the surfaces.

552.20 Acceptance. Add the following to Table 552-9 Note (2):

Transportation of specimens to laboratory may exceed time limits specified in AASHTO T 23.
