About this file

This document is a technical specification section (Section 02503) from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) for polymer modified asphalt joint and crack sealing. The specification details the requirements for cleaning and sealing longitudinal and transverse joints and cracks in existing pavement surfaces prior to overlaying. The work involves using specific materials like Asphalt Cement Class AC-20, Reclaimed Granulated Rubber (RGR), and Asphalt Rubber Sealing Compound, with precise mixing and application procedures.

The technical specification provides detailed instructions for surface preparation, including cleaning cracks and adjacent pavement surfaces with a compressed air stream of at least 100 psi. Application of the polymer modified asphalt sealer must be level with the pavement surface, using a wand and "V" shaped squeegee, with no more than 1/8-inch buildup. For cracks wider than 1/2-inch, bituminous filler (FJ-1) must be installed prior to sealing. The specification also includes weather limitations, mandating that sealing should not occur when air temperatures are below 40°F or above 90°F without the Engineer's permission, and requires a minimum 72-hour curing period between crack sealing and bituminous paving.

SECTION 02503

POLYMER MODIFIED ASPHALT JOINT AND CRACK SEALING

PART 1 GENERAL

1.1 DESCRIPTION OF WORK

A. This work is cleaning and sealing of longitudinal and transverse joints and cracks in existing pavement surfaces with a polymer modified asphalt prior to overlaying.

1.2 RELATED WORK SPECIFIED ELSEWHERE

A. Superpave Asphalt Mixture Design, HMA Binder And Wearing Course - Section 02547.

1.3 REFERENCE STANDARDS

A. Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Publication 408 Specifications, latest edition.

1.4 SUBMITTALS

A. Provide copies of materials certificates signed by material produce and Contractor certifying that each material item complies with, or exceeds specified requirements.

1.5 SITE CONDITIONS

A. Weather Limitations

1. Do not place sealer when the air temperature is below 40F or above 90F unless permitted by the Engineer.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.1 MATERIALS

A. Asphalt Cement Class AC-20. Section 702.

B. Reclaimed Granulated Rubber (RGR). As listed in PennDOT Bulletin 15, include certification with each shipment.

02503-2

C. Asphalt Rubber Sealing Compound. As listed in PennDOT Bulletin 15. Include certification with each shipment.

D. Rubberized Joint Sealing Material.

E. Bituminous Wearing Course FJ-1.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 MIXING PROCEDURES

A. Combine the AC-20 and reclaimed granulated rubber to obtain a mixture having proportions of 2 pounds of RGR per gallon of asphalt cement.

B. Blend the AC-20 and RGR in an oil-jacketed double wall kettle (indirect heating) equipped with agitator and 2-inch hot asphalt pump.

C. Provide a separate thermometer for oil bath and melting chamber.

D. Provide a pump for circulating the transfer oil bath.

E. Heat and agitate the mixture within the temperature range of 350F to 380F for 30 minutes.

F. Do not allow the operating temperature in the kettle to exceed 400F.

G. For premixed material obtain the safe heating temperature range and recommended pouring temperature from the manufacturer. Place the material within this temperature range and as close as possible to the recommended pouring temperature.

H. Do not maintain any single batch of material at the pouring temperature for more than four (4) hours.

I. Reheat only in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations.

3.2 SURFACE PREPARATION:

A. Apply only to pavement surfaces that are clean, dry, and free from any loose material or debris.

02503-3

B. Clean all cracks and pavement surfaces for six (6”) inches adjacent to the crack using a compressed air stream of at least 100 psi (measured at the source).

3.3 APPLICATION

A. Apply polymer modified asphalt to cracks as directed by the Engineer up to 1-inch wide.

B. Apply polymer modified asphalt sealer level with the pavement surface using a wand followed by a standard "V" shaped asphalt squeegee. Leave no more than 1/8-inch buildup.

C. For cracks greater than ½-inch wide, install bituminous filler (FJ-1) within the crack prior to sealing.

3.4 CURING

A. Allow a minimum of seventy-two (72) hours between crack sealing and installation of any bituminous paving, unless otherwise directed by the Engineer.
