About this file

This document is a technical specification section (Section 02506) from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) for concrete curb construction. The specification details the comprehensive requirements for contractors to furnish materials, labor, and equipment to construct concrete curbing at specified locations. The document outlines strict material specifications, including the use of air-entrained (6%) 3,750 p.s.i. PennDOT Class AA concrete, and provides detailed instructions for subgrade preparation, formwork, joint construction, concrete placement, finishing, protection, and curing.

The specification mandates precise technical requirements, such as excavation to 18 inches below the finished curb line, use of 3/4-inch thick expansion joint material, contraction joints at 10-foot intervals, and a minimum 72-hour curing period. All work must conform to PennDOT Publication 408 specifications, with contractors required to submit material certificates and provide daily concrete delivery slips. The contractor is responsible for repairing or replacing any defects to the engineer's satisfaction, and additional provisions address temperature restrictions, with concrete placement prohibited below 40°F without approved precautions.
