About this file
This document is a technical specification section (Section 02548) for pavement markings, developed in accordance with PennDOT standards. The specification provides comprehensive guidelines for contractors applying pavement markings, detailing requirements for materials, equipment, surface preparation, and application techniques. The document specifies the use of white and yellow traffic paints (AASHTO Type N and Type F), glass beads (AASHTO M-247, Type I), and establishes precise technical requirements for equipment calibration, paint thickness, bead application rates, and surface preparation.
Key technical requirements include using equipment capable of simultaneously applying two four-inch parallel lines in solid or broken patterns, automatically dispensing glass beads, and measuring line lengths. The specification mandates precise calibration tolerances for paint line measuring devices, cycle length timers, bead guns, and paint guns. Additional requirements include surface cleaning, temperature restrictions (no application below 45°F), paint wet-film thickness of 15 mils, glass bead application at 6 pounds per gallon of paint, and specific protection protocols for different paint types to ensure proper drying and traffic management.

SECTION 02548
PAVEMENT MARKINGS
PART 1 GENERAL
1.1 DESCRIPTION
A. This work shall consist of the application of pavement markings of the type indicated in accordance with PennDOT standards at the locations indicated on the drawings and/or described herein.
B. The Contractor shall re-paint all markings removed, partially removed or otherwise marred.
PART 2 GENERAL
2.1 MATERIALS
A. Furnish all material including paint and glass beads.
B. Furnish certification that the paint and glass beads meet or exceed PennDOT requirements and the following:
1. Glass Beads - AASHTO M-247, Type I (Standard gradation).
2. Paint: AASHTO M-248 for ready-mix white and yellow traffic paints, Type N and Type F.
C. Furnish AASHTO Type N Paint when Type I conventional Traffic Paint is required, and furnish AASHTO Type F paint when Type II Low-Heat, Rapid Dry Conventional Traffic Paint is required.
PART 3 CONSTRUCTION
3.1 GENERAL
A. Apply in accordance with PA Code 67, Chapter 211, Subchapter K.
02548-2
3.2 EQUIPMENT
A. Use equipment that is:
1. Capable of simultaneously applying two four (4”) inch parallel lines, in either solid or broken patterns or various combinations thereof;
2. Capable of automatically dispensing glass beads onto the painted surface, at the required application rate, by the pressurized glass-gun method; and
3. Equipped with a measuring device, which automatically and continuously measures the length of each line placed, to the nearest foot.
4. Do not use hand brushes or rollers.
B. Calibration: Use a machine calibrated as follows:
1. Paint line measuring device - Calibrate automatic paint line length gauges to maintain a tolerance of ±25 feet per mile.
2. Cycle length/paint line length timer - Calibrate cycle length to maintain a tolerance of ±6 inches per 40 feet; calibrate paint line length to maintain a tolerance of ±3 inches per 10 feet.
3. Bead guns - Calibrate to dispense glass spheres simultaneously at the specified rate. Check guns by dispensing glass spheres into a gallon container for a predetermined fixed period of time. Verify the weight of glass beads.
4. Paint guns - Calibrate to simultaneously apply paint binder at uniform rates as specified with an allowable tolerance of ±1 mil.
C. Surface Preparation
1. Satisfactorily clean and dry the roadway surfaces. Blow or sweep loose dirt and other debris.
2. Do not apply when surfaces are wet, or air temperature is below 45F.
D. Application Rates
1. Paint: Dispense in a wet-film thickness of 15 mils ±1 mil.
2. Glass Beads: Apply at a rate of 6 pounds per gallon of paint.
E. Application
02548-3
1. General: Apply as directed by the Engineer. All lines shall be straight and parallel unless otherwise directed.
F. Defective Work
1. Satisfactorily remove any markings not placed correctly.
G. Protection of Painted Surfaces
1. Type I Conventional Traffic Paint: Provide satisfactory protection for at least 30 minutes or until paint is dry and track free from vehicular traffic.
2. Type II Low Heat Traffic Paint: Provide satisfactory protection until paint is dry and track free from vehicular traffic.
3. Repaint marked or damaged areas as directed.
