About this file

This is a Task Group Instruction (TGI) detailing maintenance work requirements for the USS HOWARD (DDG-83)'s fuel expansion seawater overflow tank system. The document (TGI No. FO TK GP-1 5-214-1-F) outlines procedures for cleaning, assessing, inspecting, repairing, and preserving the Fuel Expansion Seawater Overflow Tank Group-1 and associated fuel tanks across multiple ship locations including the Sonar Cooling Equipment Room, CPO Baggage Room, Auxiliary Machinery Room, and Engine Room.

The work involves maintenance of six interconnected tanks with a total capacity of 79,853 gallons, requiring dewatering of 24,000 gallons. Specific tasks include commercial blast cleaning, ultrasonic thickness measurements of structural plating, repair of deteriorated welds and plates, and preservation coating application. The contractor work period is scheduled for April 7, 2025 through July 14, 2025, with SRF-JRMC providing support services including crane operations, utilities, safety inspections, and quality assurance. Special requirements include Level III cleanliness standards for piping systems and fabrication of non-flammable closures for fire zone boundary work. The work was initiated in response to Condition Report No. NNR17044-25-02 from Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd.
