About this file

This is a Task Group Instruction (TGI) for maintenance work on the USS HOWARD (DDG-83) fuel tank system. The document details requirements for cleaning, assessing, repairing, and preserving Fuel Tank Group-2 (5-174-4-F) and associated components.

The work includes dewatering five fuel tanks with a total capacity of 70,684 gallons, conducting structural and coating assessments, performing Level III cleaning, repairing deteriorated welds and plates, and preserving surfaces. Specific repair work includes vee-out and welding of one linear foot of deteriorated welds, base metal weld buildup of 31 square inches of plate defects, and installation of one square foot of new plate. The work affects fire zone boundaries and requires non-flammable closures. The period of performance is April 7, 2025 through July 14, 2025. The work will be performed at dry dock with support services provided by SRF-JRMC including crane operations, utilities, safety inspections, and quality assurance. The TGI requires compliance with multiple technical references and includes specific documentation requirements for assessments and repairs.
