About this file
This is a Task Group Instruction (TGI) for cleaning, assessing, inspecting, repairing, and preserving Fuel Tank Group-1 on the USS HOWARD (DDG-83), with work to be performed between April 7, 2025 and July 14, 2025. The document details maintenance requirements for multiple fuel tanks and associated spaces, including Fuel Tank Group-1 (5-174-1-F) with a capacity of 15,468 gallons, and five additional tanks with a total combined capacity of 79,853 gallons.
The scope includes dewatering tanks, commercial blast cleaning, ultrasonic thickness measurements, structural integrity assessments, and preservation coating work. Specific repair tasks include welding one linear foot of deteriorated welds, base metal weld buildup of 31 square inches of plate defects, removal and replacement of one square foot of deteriorated plate, and one linear foot of defective stiffener. The work requires Level III cleanliness standards and involves special requirements for fire zone boundary work with non-flammable closure fabrication. SRF-JRMC will provide various support services including crane operations, utilities, safety inspections, and QA inspections. The document includes detailed technical specifications and reference drawings for completing the tank maintenance work.
