About this file
This is a Task Group Instruction (TGI) document for maintenance work on the USS HOWARD (DDG-83) fuel tanks. The TGI details requirements for cleaning, assessing, inspecting, repairing, and preserving Fuel Receiving Tank Group-1 (4-78-1-F) and Fuel Tank Group-1 (5-78-1-F), with work to be performed between April 7, 2025 and July 14, 2025.
The scope includes dewatering tanks, commercial blast cleaning, ultrasonic thickness measurements of structural plating, and installation of new zinc anodes. Specific requirements include base metal weld buildup of 31 square inches of plate defects, replacement of deteriorated plates and stiffeners, and installation of new zinc anodes (91 ZEP type and 58 ZHC-23 type) with associated mounting hardware. The work requires Level III cleanliness for piping systems and involves hot work in magazine spaces. Special requirements include maintaining fire zone boundary protection and following specific procedures for working in magazine spaces. The work will be performed as part of the ship's Selected Restricted Availability (SRA) at Yokosuka Naval Base, Japan, with technical oversight from SRF-JRMC personnel.
