About this file
This document contains multiple engineering reports summarizing shielding requirements for radiology areas in a Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The reports evaluate shielding needs for an Interventional Radiology Lab, Electrophysiology Lab, Cardiac Catheterization Lab, Radiology Fluoroscopy area, and Radiology Multi-Purpose area. The reports identify specific barrier locations, required shielding thicknesses of lead or concrete to limit public radiation exposure to below regulatory dose limits, and other comments. Shielding requirements are determined using methodology from NCRP Report 147 on structural shielding for medical x-ray facilities. All shielding should extend 7 feet above the finished floor. The related federal contract opportunity is to remodel areas 2W for Interventional Radiology, Cardiac Catheterization, and Electrophysiology procedures for the Department of Veterans Affairs Veterans Health Administration VISN 23.

RE: Shielding Requirements for VAMC IR LAB 2W153, EP LAB 2W151 and CATH LAB 2W152
Shielding requirements for the IR LAB 2W153, EP LAB 2W151 and CATH LAB 2W152 are summarized in the tables below. Determinations were made using methodology in NCRP 147 "Structural Shielding Design for Medical X-Ray Imaging Facilities". All shielding should extend to a height of 7 ft. above the finished floor.
The dose limit of 0.02 mGy/wk. corresponds to the IDPH limit of 100 mrem/yr. for the public. Distance is from the point of the x-ray tube to 1 ft. beyond the barrier.
