About this file
The document is a detailed explanation of Coordination Study Reports, providing a comprehensive guide to interpreting the various elements and settings in electrical switchgear and protective devices. The guide breaks down key table headers and terminology related to solid state trip (SST) units, including manufacturer, type, style, sensor/frame ratings, and specific protective settings such as Long Time Pick Up (LTPU), Short Time Pick Up (STPU), Instantaneous trip, and Ground Trip parameters. It explains how these settings are used to establish relay curves and determine the operational characteristics of electrical protective equipment, with particular focus on how different settings like plug/tap values, delay bands, and trip amperage affect the device's protective functionality.
The document provides technical details on how to read and understand the nuanced settings of thermal magnetic breakers and solid state trip units, including how instantaneous settings are calculated, the meaning of different delay bands (min, intermediate, max), and how frame ratings influence trip point calculations. It serves as a comprehensive reference for electrical engineers and technicians who need to interpret detailed protective device settings in coordination study reports, offering insights into how various parameters like I2t (energy let-through), override settings, and pickup percentages contribute to the overall protective strategy of an electrical distribution system.

Coordination Study Reports Page 1
The following is provided to aid in interpreting and understanding the information provided in the coordination report.
SECTION HEADER
1st Line – Identifies the name of the switchgear. It also identifies the protective device settings and whether they are proposed or current “as found” settings.
TABLE HEADERS
SST – Indicates the style of trip unit to be solid a state trip protective device. List all devices in switchgear that are SST.
Manufacturer – List the manufacturer of the SST. It is the bases by which the program uses to establish the relay curves used on the time current curves.
Type – Provides a list of solid state trip unit types (or brands) installed. . It is the bases by which the program uses to establish the relay curves used on the time current curves.
Style – Solid state trip unit styles (or models) defines available features of protective device. It is the bases by which the program uses to establish the relay curves used on the time current curves.
Sensor/ Frame – Indicates the sensor rating of the trip unit or the breaker frame in amps.
The sensor feeds the trip unit with a current proportional to the current in the monitored circuit. . It is the bases by which the program uses to establish the relay curves used on the time current curves.
Plug / Tap – Indicates the plug or tap values which ratio the sensor’s affective range.
Selected plug or tap values determine the protective device pickup.
LTPU – Long Time Pick Up – Includes entries for Name, Setting, Mult. and Trip (A).
Name: Identifies the type of pickup.
Settings: Indicates what percentage of the “plug / tap” the long time pickup will operate.
Mult: Is a multiple setting, which can be adjusted to “fine tune” the long time pickup setting. (Not used in this report)
Trip (A): Amps at which the long time pickup will operate.
LT Delay – Long Time Delay – Includes entries for Name and Band.
Name: Indentifies the type of delay.
Coordination Study Reports Page 2
Band: Indicates the delay band of the long time setting. (typical settings are min, intermediate or max)
STPU – Short Time Pick Up – Includes entries for Name, Setting, Trip (A), Band and I2t.
Name: Identifies the type of pickup.
Setting: Indicates what multiple of the “STPU - Trip (A)” setting that the short time pickup will operate.
Trip (A): Gives the amps at which the short time pick up will activate.
Band: Indicates the delay band of the short time setting. (typical settings are min, intermediate or max)
I2t: Selects the shape and slope of the delay short time band. (In indicates enabled short time delay. Out indicates disabled short time delay.)
Inst - Instantaneous – Includes entries for Setting, Override and Trip (A).
Setting: Indicates what multiple of the “LTPU - Trip (A)” setting that the instantaneous pickup will operate.
Override: Identifies whether instantaneous has been disabled.
Trip (A): Amps at which the instantaneous component will operate.
Ground Trip – Includes entries for Pickup, Trip (A), Delay and I2t.
Pickup: Indicates what percentage of the “plug / tap” the ground trip will activate.
Trip (A): Amps at which the ground component will operate.
Delay: Indicates the delay band of the ground trip setting. (typical setting are min, intermediate or max)
I2t: Selects the shape and slope of the delay for the ground trip band. (In indicates enabled delay. Out indicates disabled delay.)
Thermal Magnetic Breaker – Designates non-electrical trip. List all downstream equipment on the system that has thermal magnetic breakers.
Manufacturer – List the manufacturer of the Thermal magnetic breaker available in the device library. It is also a part of what the program uses to establish the relay curves for the time current curves.
Type – Provides a list of breaker types (or brands) installed. It is the bases by which the program uses to establish the relay curves used on the time current curves.

Style – Thermal magnetic breaker styles (or models) defines available features of protective device. It is the bases by which the program uses to establish the relay curves used on the time current curves.
Frame – Indicates the frame rating of the trip unit.
Trip – Amps at which the instantaneous component will operate.
Instantaneous – Includes entries for Setting and Trip (A).
Setting: Depending on the Style and Frame, the setting gives the value for the breaker to operate or a multiplier by which to obtain a higher operational setting.
This is calculated by multiplying the predetermined value times the maximum frame size rating. In some cases it calls for “Hi” which is typically 10 times the frame rating.
Trip (A): Amps at which the instantaneous component will operate.
