About this file
This is a Request for Information (RFI) response regarding Project 610-20-103 for the renovation of Building 16 at the Department of Veterans Affairs facility in Marion, Indiana. The RFI (numbered NH04) dated December 11, 2024, seeks clarification about wall type P-9 construction specifications, specifically regarding metal stud spacing, foam insulation requirements, and R-19 batt insulation installation.
The response from Viridian Architectural Design, Inc., dated December 24, 2024, indicates that P-9 is to be a field application based on variable conditions. They clarify that the 1-1/2" spray foam insulation and R-19 batt insulation may overlap in some locations to ensure a complete insulation barrier, and the spray foam insulation should be acceptable to the owner. The RFI was submitted by Don Jungst from Nora/Hagerman in Fishers, IN. The project is part of a larger renovation to house the VA Northern Indiana Health Care System's Executive Leadership Team and administrative departments.

Wall type P-9 is described as 3-5/8” metal studs…1-1/2” foam insulation between brick wall and metal studs with remaining cavity filled with R-19 batt insulation. Metal stud to stand of existing brick wall 1”.
1. If the foam insulation is 1-1/2” and the studs are 1” off the wall, there will not be 1-1/2” of foam “between the brick and the metal stud. Which is correct 1” standoff or 1-1/2” between?
2. Depending on the answer to 1, there will be a void of either 3-5/8” or 3-1/4” from the face of the foam insulation to the back side of the drywall. RF-19 batt insulation has a nominal thickness of 6-1/2”. Are we to compress the insulation and make it fit? If it is depressed, the R-value will be reduced.
