Subject: Shallow Horizontal Hydraulic Gradient & Average Linear Velocity
Objective
Calculate the horizontal hydraulic gradient at the US Space Force Station for March 2022 Landfill groundwater sampling event for shallow wells. Gradients to be used in subsequent calculations of average linear groundwater flow velocity.
Calculations
Horizontal Hydraulic Gradient
Ih=Δhh/Δlh
Where:
Ih = Horizontal hydraulic gradient
Δhh = Difference in water elevation along flow lines labeled on the attached flow map
Δlh = Length (distance) between the respective contours long labeled flow line
Distance Along Difference in Elevation Horizontal
Gradient (feet/foot) Flow line (feet) (ft. MSL)
Flowline A 640 2.25 – 1.5 = 0.75 0.0012
Flowline B 456 2.25 – 1.25 = 1.0 0.0022
Flowline C 508 1.75 – 0.75 = 1.0 0.0019
March 2022 shallow average horizontal hydraulic gradient is 0.0018 feet/foot

Average Linear Velocity
V=K lh/ne
Where:
K = Hydraulic Conductivity (236.2 ft/day); average of slug tests performed by
ESE Consultants, Inc. in 1988
Ih = Average Horizontal hydraulic gradient (0.0018 feet/foot) ne = Effective porosity (0.25); estimated
The calculated shallow average linear velocity at the site, is 1.70 ft/day.
