MANUFACTURED WALL PANELS 07412 - 1

SECTION 07110 - SHEET MEMBRANE WATERPROOFING

PART 1 - GENERAL

RELATED DOCUMENTS

Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Division 1 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.

SUMMARY

This Section includes sheet membrane waterproofing systems.

Types of sheet waterproofing specified in this Section include the following:

Rubberized asphalt sheet waterproofing. Apply to exterior vertical surfaces as indicated on drawings.

SYSTEM PERFORMANCE

General: Provide sheet waterproofing products that have been produced and installed to establish and maintain continuous watertight seals.

SUBMITTALS

Product data and general recommendations from waterproofing materials manufacturer.

QUALITY ASSURANCE

Manufacturer's Qualifications: Obtain primary waterproofing materials of each type required from a single manufacturer to the greatest extent possible. Provide secondary materials only as recommended by manufacturer of primary materials.

Installer: A firm with not less than five waterproofing projects similar to requirements for this Project with satisfactory in-service performance and which is approved by primary waterproofing materials manufacturer.

PROJECT CONDITIONS

Substrate: Proceed with work after substrate construction, openings, and penetrating work have been completed and areas are free of standing or running water, ice, and frost. Verify that concrete is dry, smooth, and free from sharp or ragged out-angles, honeycombing, rock pockets, depressions, and projections.

Weather: Proceed with waterproofing and associated work only when existing and forecasted weather conditions will permit work to be performed in accordance with manufacturers' recommendations and warranty requirements.

WARRANTY

Warranty: Submit a written warranty executed by the manufacturer, agreeing to repair or replace sheet membrane waterproofing that fails in materials or workmanship within specified warranty period.

Warranty Period: Five years from date of Substantial Completion.

The warranty shall not deprive the Government of other rights the Government may have under other provisions of the Contract Documents and will be in addition to and run concurrent with other warranties made by the Contractor under requirements of the Contract Documents.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

RUBBERIZED ASPHALT SHEET WATERPROOFING

Rubberized asphalt self-adhering membrane integrally bonded to polyethylene sheeting, formed into uniform flexible sheets of not less than 56 mils thick, complying with the following:

Tensile Strength: 250 psi minimum; ASTM D 412.

Ultimate Elongation: 300 percent minimum; ASTM D 412.

Brittleness Temperature: Minus 25 deg F (minus 32 deg C); ASTM D 746.

Hydrostatic Head Resistance: 150 feet minimum.

Water Absorption: Not more than 0.5 percent weight gain after 48 hours' immersion at 70 deg F (21 deg

C); ASTM D 570.

Products: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide one of the following:

Bituthene, W.R. Grace & Co.

MEL-ROL, W.R. Meadows, Inc.

AUXILIARY MATERIALS

Adhesives and Joint Tape: Provide types of adhesive compound and tapes recommended by waterproofing sheet manufacturer for bonding to substrate, for waterproofing seams in membrane, and for waterproofing

joints between membrane and flashings, adjoining surfaces, and projections through membrane.

Primers: Provide type of concrete primer recommended by manufacturer of sheet waterproofing material for applications required.

Flashing Materials: Except as otherwise indicated, provide types of flexible sheet material for flashing as recommended by waterproofing sheet manufacturer.

Continuous Termination Bar: Provide continuous termination bar at top of membrane as indicated and as recommended by manufacturer.

Fasten to wall per manufacturer's recommendations.

Top Edge Seal: For vertical membrane, finish in reglet and provide continuous termination bar.

Caulk exposed edges with mastic or sealant.

Coat exposed areas of sheet and flashing materials to comply with sheet manufacturer's recommendations.

Protection Board: Provide type of protection board recommended by waterproofing sheet manufacturer for vertical surfaces. Include adhesives recommended by manufacturer.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

PREPARATION

General: Comply with manufacturer's instructions for preparing surface.

On vertical walls chip off projections where necessary to properly place and adhere waterproofing sheet.

Apply primer to substrate surfaces at rate recommended by manufacturer of primary waterproofing materials. Prime only area that will be covered by waterproofing membrane in same working day.

Reprime areas not covered by waterproofing membrane within 24 hours.

INSTALLATION

Comply with manufacturer's instructions for handling and installing sheet waterproofing materials.

Coordinate installing waterproofing materials with associated work to provide complete system complying with combined recommendations by manufacturers and installers involved in Work. Schedule installation to minimize exposure of sheet waterproofing materials.

Extend waterproofing sheet and flashings to provide a complete membrane over area indicated to be waterproofed.

Comply with recommendations of manufacturer to seal and flash membrane terminations.

Seal projections through membrane and seal seams. Bond to vertical surfaces and also, where shown or recommended by manufacturer, bond to horizontal surfaces.

Protection Board: Install protection board over completed membrane, complying with manufacturer’s recommendations for both waterproofing sheet and protection course materials.

CLEANING

General: After completion, remove any masking materials and stains from exposed surfaces caused by waterproofing installation.

PROTECTION

General: Protect completed membrane during installation of other materials or processes over membrane and throughout remainder of construction period. Do not allow traffic of any type on unprotected membrane.

SECTION 07210 - BUILDING INSULATION

PART 1 - GENERAL

This Section includes the following:

Safing insulation.

Perimeter foundation insulation.

Building insulation in batt form.

DEFINITIONS

Thermal Resistivity: Where the thermal resistivity of insulation products are designated by "r-values," they represent the reciprocal of thermal conductivity (k-values). Thermal conductivity is the rate of heat flow through a homogenous material exactly 1 inch thick. Thermal resistivities are expressed by the temperature difference in degrees F between the two exposed faces required to cause one BTU to flow through one square foot per hour at mean temperatures indicated.

SUBMITTALS

General: Submit the following in accordance with Conditions of Contract and Division 1 Specification Sections.

Product data for each type of insulation product specified.

QUALITY ASSURANCE

Fire Performance Characteristics: Provide insulation materials identical to those whose indicated fire performance characteristics have been determined per the ASTM test method indicated below, by UL or other testing and inspecting organizations acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction. Identify products with appropriate markings of applicable testing and inspecting organization.

Surface Burning Characteristic: ASTM E 84.

Fire Resistance Ratings: ASTM E 119.

Combustion Characteristics: ASTM E 136.

Single-Source Responsibility for Insulation Products: Obtain each type of building insulation from a single source with resources to provide products of consistent quality in appearance and physical properties without delaying progress of the Work.

DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

Protect insulation materials from physical damage and from deterioration by moisture, soiling, and other sources. Store inside and in a dry location. Comply with manufacturer's recommendations for handling, storage, and protection during installation.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

MANUFACTURERS

Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide insulation products of one of the following:

Manufacturers of Extruded Polystyrene Board Insulation:

Amoco Foam Products Co.

DiversiFoam Products.

UC Industries, Inc.

Manufacturers of Glass Fiber Insulation:

CertainTeed Corp.

Manville: Building Insulations Div., Manville Sales Corp.

INSULATING MATERIALS

General: Provide insulating materials that comply with requirements and with referenced standards.

Preformed Units: Sizes to fit applications indicated, selected from manufacturer's standard thicknesses, widths, and lengths.

Unfaced Mineral Fiber Blanket/Batt Insulation: Thermal insulation produced by combining mineral fibers of type described below with thermosetting resins to comply with ASTM C 665 for Type I (blankets without membrane facing); and as follows:

Mineral Fiber Type: Fibers manufactured from glass or slag.

Surface Burning Characteristics: Maximum flame spread and smoke developed values of 25 and 50, respectively.

Extruded Polystyrene Board Insulation: Rigid, cellular thermal, insulation with closed-cells and integral high density skin, formed by the expansion of polystyrene base resin in an extrusion process to comply with ASTM C 578 for Type indicated; with 5-year degrees aged r-values of 5.4 and 5 at 40 and 75 degrees F (4.4 and 23.9 degrees C), respectively; and as follows:

Type IV, 1.6 pounds/cubic foot minimum density, unless otherwise indicated.

AIR VAPOR BARRIER

General: Reinforced, 3-ply high-density polyethylene sheets equal to Griffolyn, Type-65. Seal joints and edges of vapor barrier as recommended by manufacturer.

SAFING INSULATION AND ACCESSORIES

Safing Insulation: Thickness as required, unfaced.

Calking Compound: Material approved by manufacturer of safing insulation for sealing joint between safing insulation and edge of concrete floor slab against penetration of smoke.

Safing Clips: Galvanized steel safing clips approved by manufacturer of safing insulation for holding safing insulation in place.

AUXILIARY INSULATING MATERIALS

Adhesive for Bonding Insulation: Product with demonstrated capability to bond insulation or mechanical anchors securely to substrates indicated without damaging or corroding either insulation, anchors, or substrates.

Mechanical Anchors: Type and size as recommended by insulation manufacturer.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

EXAMINATION

Examine substrates and conditions with Installer present, for compliance with requirements of the Sections in which substrates and related work are specified and to determine if other conditions affecting performance of insulation are satisfactory. Do not proceed with installation of insulation until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

PREPARATION

Clean substrates of substances harmful to insulations or vapor retarders, including removal of projections that might puncture vapor retarders.

INSTALLATION, GENERAL

Comply with insulation manufacturer's instructions applicable to products and application indicated. If printed instructions are not available or do not apply to project conditions, consult manufacturer's technical representative for specific recommendations before proceeding with installation of insulation.

Extend insulation full thickness as indicated to envelop entire area to be insulated. Cut and fit tightly around obstructions, and fill voids with insulation. Remove projections that interfere with placement.

Apply a single layer of insulation of required thickness, unless otherwise shown or required to make up total thickness.

INSTALLATION OF PERIMETER INSULATION

On vertical surfaces, set units in adhesive applied in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. Use type of adhesive recommended by manufacturer of insulation.

Protect insulation on vertical surfaces (from damage during backfilling). Install perimeter insulation on inside surface of exterior foundation wall, minimum 24" wide.

INSTALLATION OF GENERAL BUILDING INSULATION

Apply insulation units to substrate, complying with manufacturer's recommendations. Bond units to substrate with adhesive or use mechanical anchorage to provide permanent placement and support of units.

Seal joints between insulation units by applying adhesive, mastic, or sealant to edges of each unit to form a tight seal. Fill voids in completed installation with adhesive, mastic, or sealant as recommended by insulation manufacturer.

Stuff glass fiber loose fill insulation into miscellaneous voids and cavity spaces. Compact to approximately 40 percent of normal maximum volume (to a density of approximately 2.5 pcf).

INSTALLATION OF SAFING INSULATION

Install safing insulation to fill openings and gaps in fire-rated ceilings, floors and walls. Leave no voids in completed installation.

PROTECTION

General: Protect installed insulation and vapor retarders from damage due to harmful weather exposures, physical abuse, and other causes. Provide temporary coverings or enclosures where insulation will be subject to abuse and cannot be concealed and protected by permanent construction immediately after installation.

SECTION 07270 - FIRESTOPPING

PART 1 - GENERAL

RELATED DOCUMENTS

Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Division 1 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.

This Section includes firestopping for the following:

Penetrations through fire-resistance-rated walls and partitions including openings containing cables, pipes, ducts, conduits, and other penetrating items.

Sealant joints in fire-resistance-rated construction.

Related Sections: The following Sections contain requirements that relate to this Section:

Division 7 Section "Building Insulation" for safing insulation and accessories.

Division 7 Section "Joint Sealants" for non-fire-resistive-rated joint sealants.

Division 15 Sections specifying ducts and piping penetrations.

Division 16 Sections specifying cable and conduit penetrations.

SYSTEM PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

General: Provide firestopping systems that are produced and installed to resist the spread of fire, according to requirements indicated, and the passage of smoke and other gases.

F-Rated Through-Penetration Firestop Systems: Provide through-penetration firestop systems with F ratings indicated, as determined per ASTM E 814, but not less than that equaling or exceeding the fire-resistance rating of the constructions penetrated.

T-Rated Through-Penetration Firestop Systems: Provide through-penetration firestop systems with T ratings, in addition to F ratings, as determined per ASTM E 814, where required by code and where systems protect penetrating items exposed to contact with adjacent materials in occupiable floor areas.

T-rated assemblies are required where the following conditions exist:

Where firestop systems protect penetrations located outside of wall cavities.

Where firestop systems protect penetrations located outside fire-resistive shaft enclosures.

Where firestop systems protect penetrations located in construction containing doors required to have a temperature-rise rating.

Where firestop systems protect penetrating items larger than a 4-inch-diameter nominal pipe or 16

sq. in. in overall cross-sectional area.

Fire-Resistive Joint Sealants: Provide joint sealants with fire-resistance ratings as determined per ASTM E 119, but not less than that equaling or exceeding the fire-resistance rating of the construction in which the joint occurs.

For firestopping exposed to view, traffic, moisture, and physical damage, provide products that do not deteriorate when exposed to these conditions.

For piping penetrations for plumbing and wet-pipe sprinkler systems, provide moisture-resistant through-penetration firestop systems.

For floor penetrations with annular spaces exceeding 4 inches or more in width and exposed to possible loading and traffic, provide firestop systems capable of supporting the floor loads involved either by installing floor plates or by other means.

For penetrations involving insulated piping, provide through-penetration firestop systems not requiring removal of insulation.

For firestopping exposed to view, provide products with flame-spread values of less than 25 and smoke-developed values of less than 450, as determined per ASTM E 84.

SUBMITTALS

General: Submit the following according to Conditions of Contract and Division 1 Specification Sections.

Product data for each type of product specified.

Certification by firestopping manufacturer that products supplied comply with local regulations controlling use of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and are nontoxic to building occupants.

Shop drawings detailing materials, installation methods, and relationships to adjoining construction for each through-penetration firestop system, and each kind of construction condition penetrated and kind of penetrating item. Include firestop design designation of qualified testing and inspecting agency evidencing compliance with requirements for each condition indicated.

Submit documentation, including illustrations, from a qualified testing and inspecting agency that is applicable to each through-penetration firestop configuration for construction and penetrating items.

QUALITY ASSURANCE

Fire-Test-Response Characteristics: Provide firestopping that complies with the following requirements and those specified under the "System Performance Requirements" article:

Firestopping tests are performed by a qualified testing and inspecting agency. A qualified testing and inspecting agency is UL, Warnock Hersey, or another agency performing testing and follow-up inspection services for firestop systems that is acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction.

Through-penetration firestop systems are identical to those tested per ASTM E 814 under conditions where positive furnace pressure differential of at least 0.01 inch of water is maintained at a distance of 0.78 inch below the fill materials surrounding the penetrating items in the test assembly. Provide rated systems complying with the following requirements:

Through-penetration firestop systems correspond to those indicated by reference to through-penetration firestop system designations listed by UL in their "Fire Resistance Directory," by Warnock Hersey, or by another qualified testing and inspecting agency.

Fire-resistive joint sealant systems are identical to those tested for fire-response characteristics per ASTM E 119 under conditions where the positive furnace pressure differential is at least 0.01 inch of water, as measured 0.78 inch from the face exposed to furnace fire. Provide systems complying with the following requirements:

Fire-Resistance Ratings of Joint Sealants: As indicated by reference to design designations listed by UL in their "Fire Resistance Directory" or by another qualified testing and inspecting agency.

Joint sealants, including backing materials, bear classification marking of qualified testing and inspection agency.

Single-Source Responsibility: Obtain through-penetration firestop systems for each kind of penetration and construction condition indicated from a single manufacturer.

Provide firestopping products containing no detectable asbestos as determined by the method specified in 40 CFR Part 763, Subpart F, Appendix A, Section 1, "Polarized Light Microscopy."

Coordinating Work: Coordinate construction of openings and penetrating items to ensure that designated through-penetration firestop systems are installed per specified requirements.

DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

Deliver firestopping products to Project site in original, unopened containers or packages with intact and legible manufacturers' labels identifying product and manufacturer; date of manufacture; lot number; shelf life, if applicable; qualified testing and inspecting agency's classification marking applicable to Project;

curing time; and mixing instructions for multicomponent materials.

Store and handle firestopping materials to prevent their deterioration or damage due to moisture, temperature changes, contaminants, or other causes.

PROJECT CONDITIONS

Environmental Conditions: Do not install firestopping when ambient or substrate temperatures are outside limits permitted by firestopping manufacturers or when substrates are wet due to rain, frost, condensation, or other causes.

Ventilation: Ventilate firestopping per firestopping manufacturers' instructions by natural means or, where this is inadequate, forced air circulation.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

FIRESTOPPING, GENERAL

Compatibility: Provide firestopping composed of components that are compatible with each other, the substrates forming openings, and the items, if any, penetrating the firestopping under conditions of service and application, as demonstrated by firestopping manufacturer based on testing and field experience.

Accessories: Provide components for each firestopping system that are needed to install fill materials and to comply with "System Performance Requirements" article in Part 1. Use only components specified by the firestopping manufacturer and approved by the qualified testing and inspecting agency for the designated fire-resistance-rated systems.

Applications: Provide firestopping systems composed of materials specified in this Section that comply with system performance and other requirements.

FIRE-RESISTIVE ELASTOMERIC JOINT SEALANTS

Elastomeric Sealant Standard: Provide manufacturer's standard chemically curing, elastomeric sealants of base polymer indicated that complies with ASTM C 920 requirements, including those referenced for Type, Grade, Class, and Uses, and requirements specified in this Section applicable to fire-resistive joint

sealants.

Sealant Colors: Provide color of exposed joint sealants to comply with the following:

Provide selections made by Contracting Officer from manufacturer's full range of standard colors for products of type indicated.

Multicomponent, Nonsag, Urethane Sealant: Type M; Grade NS; Class 25; exposure-related Use NT, and joint-substrate-related Uses M, A, and (as applicable to joint substrates indicated) O.

Multicomponent, Nonsag, Urethane Sealant:

Dynflex, Pecora Corp.

Dynatred, Pecora Corp.

Dynatrol II, Pecora Corp.

Sonolastic NP 2, Sonneborn Building Products Div.

ChemRex Inc.

Dymeric, Tremco Inc.

FIRE-RESISTANT JOINT SEALERS

General: Provide manufacturer's standard fire-stopping sealant, with accessory materials, having fire-resistance ratings indicated as established by testing identical assemblies per ASTM E 814 by Underwriters Laboratory, Inc. or other testing and inspecting agency acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction.

Foamed-In-Place Fire-Stopping Sealant: Two-part, foamed-in-place, silicone sealant formulated for use in a through-penetration fire-stop system for filling openings around cables, conduit, pipes and similar penetrations through walls.

Foamed-In-Place Fire-Stopping Sealant:

"Dow Corning Fire Stop Foam"; Dow Corning Corp.

"Pensil 851"; General Electric Co.

One-Part Fire-Stopping Sealant:

"3M Fire Barrier Caulk CP-25"; Electrical Products Div./3M "RTV 7403"; General Electric Co.

"Fyre Putty"; Standard Oil Engineered Materials Co.

MIXING

For those products requiring mixing prior to application, comply with firestopping manufacturer's directions for accurate proportioning of materials, water (if required), type of mixing equipment, selection of mixer speeds, mixing containers, mixing time, and other procedures needed to produce firestopping products of uniform quality with optimum performance characteristics for application indicated.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

EXAMINATION

Examine substrates and conditions, with Installer present, for compliance with requirements for opening configurations, penetrating items, substrates, and other conditions affecting performance of firestopping.

Do not proceed with installation until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

PREPARATION

Surface Cleaning: Clean out openings and joints immediately prior to installing firestopping to comply with recommendations of firestopping manufacturer and the following requirements:

Remove all foreign materials from surfaces of opening and joint substrates and from penetrating items that could interfere with adhesion of firestopping.

Clean opening and joint substrates and penetrating items to produce clean, sound surfaces capable of developing optimum bond with firestopping. Remove loose particles remaining from cleaning operation.

Remove laitance and form release agents from concrete.

Priming: Prime substrates where recommended by firestopping manufacturer using that manufacturer's recommended products and methods. Confine primers to areas of bond; do not allow spillage and migration onto exposed surfaces.

Masking Tape: Use masking tape to prevent firestopping from contacting adjoining surfaces that will remain exposed upon completion of Work and that would otherwise be permanently stained or damaged by such contact or by cleaning methods used to remove smears from firestopping materials. Remove tape as soon as it is possible to do so without disturbing firestopping's seal with substrates.

INSTALLING THROUGH-PENETRATION FIRESTOPS

General: Comply with the "System Performance Requirements" article in Part 1 and the through-penetration firestop manufacturer's installation instructions and drawings pertaining to products and applications indicated.

Install forming/damming materials and other accessories of types required to support fill materials during their application and in the position needed to produce the cross-sectional shapes and depths required to achieve fire ratings of designated through-penetration firestop systems. After installing fill materials, remove combustible forming materials and other accessories not indicated as permanent components of firestop systems.

Install fill materials for through-penetration firestop systems by proven techniques to produce the following results:

Completely fill voids and cavities formed by openings, forming materials, accessories, and penetrating items.

Apply materials so they contact and adhere to substrates formed by openings and penetrating items.

For fill materials that will remain exposed after completing Work, finish to produce smooth, uniform surfaces that are flush with adjoining finishes.

INSTALLING FIRE-RESISTIVE JOINT SEALANTS

General: Comply with the "System Performance Requirements" article in Part 1, with ASTM C 1193, and with the sealant manufacturer's installation instructions and drawings pertaining to products and applications indicated.

Install joint fillers to provide support of sealants during application and at position required to produce the cross-sectional shapes and depths of installed sealants relative to joint widths that allow optimum sealant movement capability and develop fire-resistance rating required.

Install sealants by proven techniques that result in sealants directly contacting and fully wetting joint substrates, completely filling recesses provided for each joint configuration, and providing uniform, cross-sectional shapes and depths relative to joint width that optimum sealant movement capability. Install sealants at the same time joint fillers are installed.

Tool nonsag sealants immediately after sealant application and prior to the time skinning or curing begins.

Form smooth, uniform beads of configuration indicated or required to produce fire-resistance rating, as well as to eliminate air pockets, and to ensure contact and adhesion of sealants with sides of joint. Remove excess sealant from surfaces adjacent to joint. Do not use tooling agents that discolor sealants or adjacent surfaces or are not approved by sealant manufacturer.

CLEANING

Clean off excess fill materials and sealants adjacent to openings and joints as work progresses by methods and with cleaning materials approved by manufacturers of firestopping products and of products in which opening and joints occur.

Protect firestopping during and after curing period from contact with contaminating substances or from damage resulting from construction operations or other causes so that they are without deterioration or damage at time of Substantial Completion. If, despite such protection, damage or deterioration occurs, cut out and remove damaged or deteriorated firestopping immediately and install new materials to produce firestopping complying with specified requirements.

SECTION 07411 - MANUFACTURED ROOF PANELS

PART 1 - GENERAL

RELATED DOCUMENTS

Drawings and general provisions of Contract, including General and Division 1 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.

This Section includes manufactured roof panels of the following type:

Standing seam roof panels to be mechanically seamed.

Girts and roof insulation related to standing seam roof panels are specified in this Section.

Internal gutters, EPDM gutter membrane and gutter drains are specified in this Section.

Roof curbs and pipe flashing are specified in this Section.

Division 5 Sections for structural framing and metal fabrications.

Division 7 Section "Manufactured Wall Panels” for exterior wall panels.

Division 7 Section "Single Ply Membrane Roofing” for installation of membrane lined gutters.

Division 7 Section “Flashing and Sheet Metal” for roof flashing and other sheet metal work.

Division 7 Section "Joint Sealants" for field-applied sealants.

Provide certified test results by a recognized testing laboratory or agency in accordance with specified test methods for each system.

Air Infiltration: Provide roof panel system with air leakage not more than 0.0156 CFM/S.F. when tested in accordance with ASTM E 283 at 20 psf pressure.

Water Penetration: Provide panel systems with no water penetration as defined in the test method when tested in accordance with ASTM E 331 at an inward static air pressure differential of not less than 20 psf for not less than 15 minutes.

SUBMITTALS

General: Submit the following in accordance with Conditions of Contract and Division 1 Specification Sections.

Product data including manufacturer's product specifications, standard details, installation instructions, and general recommendations, as applicable to materials and finishes for each component and for total panel system.

Samples for initial selection purposes in form of manufacturer's color chips showing full range of colors, textures, and patterns available for roof panels with factory-applied finishes.

Samples for verification purposes of roof panels. Provide sample panels 12 inches long by actual panel width, in the profile, style, color, and texture indicated. Include clips, battens, fasteners, closures, insulation, sealant and other panel accessories.

Shop drawings showing layouts of panels on roofs, details of edge conditions, joints, panel profiles, supports, anchorages, sealants, trim, flashings, closures, penetrations, curbs and special details.

Distinguish between factory and field assembly work.

Erection procedures and instructions shall be submitted with shop drawings.

Submit structural design calculations and test reports certified by a registered professional engineer to verify load-carrying capacities of panel system, fasteners, and expansion control calculations.

Certified Product Test Reports: Submit the following Test Reports, certified by an independent Testing Laboratory or an independent professional engineer, to verify that the proposed roofing will meet performance requirements of this specification.

ASTM E1592, “Standard Test Method for Structural Performance of Sheet Metal Roof and Siding Systems by Uniform Static Air Pressure Difference” test results.

Coating Performance Testing.

Certification by the manufacturer that the roofing assembly is listed in the UL Building Materials Directory with a Class 90 wind uplift rating, including relevant construction number. Certified statements from the manufacturer are not acceptable in lieu of a UL 90 classification.

Certification by the manufacturer attesting that the roofing system has been in use for a minimum of 10 years.

Certification by the manufacturer listing installers that are qualified and approved to erect the manufacturer’s roof panels.

QUALITY ASSURANCE

Product Performance: The standing seam panel system shall be designed to safely resist the positive and negative loads as indicated on the drawings.

Single Source Responsibility: Provide metal roof panels from one source and by a single manufacturer.

Metal wall panel manufacturer shall be same as manufacturer of metal roof panels.

Wind Uplift: Provide roof panel system including supports meeting requirements of UL 580 for Class 90 wind uplift resistance.

The manufacturer shall have a permanent, stationary, indoor production facility available for regular UL Inspections.

Structural-uniform uplift load capacity of the panel system shall be determined in accordance with ASTM E1592, “Standard Test Method for Structural Performance of Sheet Metal Roof and Siding Systems by Uniform Static Air Pressure Difference” as follows:

The Factor of Safety on the test results shall be 1.65 for the panel, batten or clip ultimate loads with no increase for wind.

The Factor of Safety for fasteners shall be 2.50 in metal.

Design uplift capacity for conditions of gage, span or loading other than those tested may be determined by interpolation of test results. Extrapolation of conditions outside the range of the test

is not acceptable.

Deflection shall be L/240 for positive loading.

Manufacturer Qualifications: The manufacturer shall have had at least fifteen (15) years experience in architectural roofing, and the specified panel system itself shall have been in use for a minimum of ten (10) years. The manufacturer shall have a permanent, stationary, indoor production facility.

Installer Qualifications: The installer shall have had a minimum of five (5) years experience in the installation of concealed clip, structural standing seam roofing.

The installer shall submit the names and addresses of five (5) previous standing seam metal roofing projects of comparable size, scope and complexity.

Professional Engineer Qualifications: A professional engineer who is legally authorized to practice in the jurisdiction where Project is located and who is experienced in providing engineering services of the kind indicated. Engineering services are defined as those performed for installations of roof panels that are similar to those indicated for this Project in material, design, and extent.

Pre-Roofing Conference: Before installing roofing and associated Work, meet at mutually agreed location with Installer, roofing manufacturer, installers of related work, and other entities concerned with roofing performance, including Architect, and Contracting Officer’s Representative. Record discussions and agreements and furnish copy to each participant. Provide at least 72 hours advance notice to participants prior to convening pre-roofing conference.

Field Measurements: Where possible, prior to fabrication of panels, take field measurements of structure or substrates to receive panel system. Allow for trimming panel units where final dimensions cannot be established prior to fabrication.

DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

Deliver panels and other components so they will not be damaged or deformed. Package roof panels for protection against transportation damage.

Handling: Exercise care in unloading, storing, and erecting roof covering panels to prevent bending, warping, twisting, and surface damage.

Stack materials on platforms or pallets, covered with tarpaulins or other suitable weathertight ventilated covering. Store metal roof panels so that they will not accumulate water. Do not store panels in contact with other materials that might cause staining, denting, or other surface damage.

WARRANTY

Finish Warranty: Furnish panel manufacturer's written warranty covering failure of the factory-applied

exterior finish on metal roof panels within the warranty period. This warranty shall be in addition to and not a limitation of other rights the Government may have against the Contractor under the Contract Documents.

Warranty period for factory-applied exterior finishes on roof panels is 20 years after the date of Substantial Completion.

MANUFACTURERS

Manufacturer: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide roof panels by one of the following:

H. H. Robertson, “SR3-36".

Smith Steelite, “SRS Mechanically Seamed Standing Seam Roof System.”

Requests to use alternate systems must be submitted in writing to the project designer at least ten (10) days prior to the bid date. Performance requirements, certified statements, samples, and descriptive data must be included in this submittal per Part 1 of this specification for designer review and approval.

SHEET MATERIALS

Structural Quality Aluminum-Zinc Alloy-Coated Steel Sheet: Hot-dip aluminum-zinc-coated steel sheet complying with ASTM A 792, Grade 50B with class AZ-50 coating.

METAL FINISHES

General: Apply coatings either before or after forming and fabricating panels, as required by coating process and as required for maximum coating performance capability. Protect coating either by application of strippable film or by packing plastic film or other suitable material between panels in a manner to properly protect the finish. Furnish air-drying spray finish in matching color for touch-up.

Color: Custom color as selected by the Contracting Officer.

Fluoropolymer Coating: Three-coat, thermocured, full-strength 70% “Kynar 500" coating consisting of Prime Coat, Intermediate Color Coat and clean Top Coat and complying with the following:

Total Coating Thickness: Minimum 2.5 mil.

The coating systems shall comply with the following performance characteristics in accordance with ASTM test procedures:

Weatherometer Test (ASTM D822-86, G23-88): Passes 5,000 hours. No objectionable

chalking, color change or adhesion loss.

Specular Gloss (ASTM D523-89 at 60°): Coating shall have a gloss of 30±5

Dew Cycle Weatherometer (ASTM D3361): 1,000 hours, color changes 3.6 units E. No chalking.

Humidity Resistance (ASTM D2247-87): 2,000 hours with 90° bend at exposed panels.

Cleveland Condensing Cabinet at 100° F. No blister, no rust, no color change, no loss of adhesion on bends.

Salt Spray (ASTM B117-85): 2,000 hours with exposed panels scribed and bent 120° to represent formability. No blisters and no rust on 120° formed bend. Trace blisters with creepage at scribed.

Corrosion Resistance (KESTERNICH): Sulfur Dioxide Cyclic Test-40 cycles. No blisters, edge creepage or white rusting; less than .6 unit E color change.

Chemical Resistance (ASTM 1308-87): 500 hours. 10% HCL-No effect; 10% H2SO4-no effect; 10% NAOH-trace blisters, no color change.

Abrasion Resistance Test Falling Sand (ASTM D968-91): Liters to expose 5/32" substrate- 200 liters.

Flexibility (ASTM D4145-90 T-BENDS): No tape pick-off at O-T bends.

ROOF PANELS

Standing Seam Roof Panels: Manufacturer's standing-seam roof panel system designed for mechanical attachment of panels to roof purlin using a concealed clip. Form panels of 22-gage aluminum-zinc- coated steel sheets.

Panels shall be a maximum of 18" wide with a minimum of 1-3/4" high vertical rib height and four

(4) longitudinal ribs located in the pan to minimize oil-canning.

Battens: Manufacture panel battens of the same material, finish and length as the panels with factory-applied sealant. Battens shall be mechanically seamed with a field-operated electric seaming machine provided by the manufacturer, where applicable.

Concealed Clips: Fasten standing seam roofing to framing members with 16 gage, G-90 galvanized steel, ASTM A446, concealed fastening (C-1 or C-2) clips.

Clips shall provide for unlimited, unimpeded panel movement confirmed by testing, certified by an

independent professional engineer.

THERMAL INSULATION

Polyisocyanurate Board Insulation: Unfaced, preformed, rigid, cellular, polyurethane thermal insulation complying with ASTM C 591, Type 2 with aged r-values of 6.2 at 75 deg F. Thickness as indicated on drawings.

Mineral Fiber Blanket Insulation: Flexible, resilient, noncombustible blankets of mineral or glass fiber, complying with ASTM C 665.

Type I: Unfaced.

MISCELLANEOUS MATERIALS

Fasteners: Screws shall be self-tapping type with combination steel and neoprene washers.

Exposed screws shall be 300 series stainless steel, color finished to match panel.

Concealed screws shall be carbon steel or 300 series stainless steel.

Blind rivets shall be solid-threaded sealed - stem type and have a weather-tight neoprene washer under the head. Exposed rivets color finished to match panel.

Closures: Precut profile closure shall be cut from gray cross-linked closed-cell polyethylene composition foam.

All metal ridge and hip closures shall be protected and supported by a formed metal closure manufactured from the same material, color, and finish as the roofing.

Accessories: Except as indicated as work of another specification Section, provide components required for a complete roof panel system, including trim, copings, corner units, ridge closures, clips, seam covers, battens, flashings, internal gutters, gutter drains, flexible sheet membrane flashing, pipe flashing, metal roof curbs, sealants, gaskets, fillers, closure strips, and similar items. Match materials and finishes of panels.

Factory Applied Sidelap Sealant: Non-skinning, non-hardening, non-oxidizing butyl sealant, designed for metal-to-metal concealed joints.

Field-Applied Panel End Sealant: Extruded polymeric butyl tape, non-skinning and not easily displaced under compression.

Exposed Sealant: One component, skinning, polyurethane joint sealant. Color to be coordinated

with that of panel.

Thermal Barriers: The thermal blocks shall be non-treated wood or expanded polystyrene per manufacturer’s recommendations.

Snowguards: Install per manufacturer’s recommendations such that snowguards do not penetrate metal roof panels. SnoGem or approved equal. Color to match roof panel coating system.

Gutters: Provide gutters of size and configuration as shown on drawings. Provide gutters of 16 gage stainless steel, fully lined with EPDM membrane lapped under standing seam roof panels for complete and weatherproof assembly. Provide EPDM boots sealed into gutter drains. Form gutters in sections not less than 10 feet in length, complete with outlet tubes for drainage pipe and other special shapes as required. Pipe outlet tubes shall be continuously welded to gutter for weatherproof assembly with EPDM boots overlapping joint a minimum of 4 inches. Join gutter sections with welded and sealed joints. Make provisions to accommodate expansion and contraction. Gutter drain piping shall be provided by Mechanical Contractor. Coordinate installation for weatherproof assembly. Provide heat tape as indicated.

Flexible Sheet Membrane Flashing: EPDM synthetic rubber sheet, 60 mil thickness, black.

Gutter Drain Type A: Equal to J.R. Smith 1630 Series gutter drain with 4" deep cast iron body, bottom outlet and high dome bronze cover with bronze flashing clamp secured with brass screws.

Minimum free area shall be 24.5 sq. inches.

Gutter Drain Type B: Equal to J.R. Smith 1620 Series gutter drain with 2" deep cast iron body, bottom outlet and low dome bronze cover with bronze flashing clamp secured with brass screws.

Minimum free area shall be 8 sq. inches.

Pipe Flashing: Pipe flashing units shall be constructed of ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber. Unit shall be grey in color. Ductile aluminum reinforcing ring shall be bonded to rubber flange on base of flashing unit. Temperature range shall be -25°F to 250°F. Flashing shall be installed in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and shall be properly sized for pipe diameter. Provide Aztec Washer Company, "Master Flash", or Buildex, “Decktite”, or approved equal.

Penetration through roof panels shall be through the flat area of the panel. Penetrations through corrugations shall not be permitted.

Metal Roof Curbs: Provide seamed-in metal roof curbs as required for support of equipment.

Verify location and weight of equipment with appropriate subcontractors. Install roof curbs in accordance with manufacturer recommendations.

Comply with loading and strength requirements for equipment support. Coordinate dimensions with rough-in sheets or shop drawings of equipment to be supported. Fabricate

of structural quality sheet steel (ASTM A 570, Grade as required) which has been prepared for painting and factory-primed and painted with 2-mil thickness of baked-on synthetic enamel, after fabrication.

Fabricate with welded or sealed mechanical corner joints. Provide complete with diverter strips and base profile coordinated with metal roof panels.

Except as otherwise indicated or required for strength, fabricate units of minimum 14-gage (0.0747") metal, and to minimum height of 12".

Sloping Roofs: Fabricate curb/support units with height tapered to match slope, to result in level installation of tops of units.

Manufacturer: Equal to Thybar Corporation, “ThyCurb”.

Bituminous Coating: Cold-applied asphalt mastic, SSPC paint 12, compounded for 15-mil dry film thickness per coat.

PANEL FABRICATION

General: Fabricate and finish panels and accessories at the factory to greatest extent possible, by manufacturer's standard procedures and processes, as required to fulfill indicated performance requirements demonstrated by laboratory testing. Comply with indicated profiles and dimensional requirements and with structural requirements.

The panels shall withstand a 250 lb. concentrated load applied to a four square inch area at the center of the panel at mid span between supports with no panel deformation, rib buckling, or panel sidelap separation which will adversely affect the weathertightness of the system.

Fasten roof (and fascia) panels to the framing members or deck with concealed anchor clips designed to allow for thermal movement of the panels except where specific fixed points are indicated.

There shall be no exposed fasteners except to fasten flashings, at fixing points, or as indicated on the drawings.

Roofing panels, clips, closures, flashing material, and related accessories shall be the product of single manufacturer.

Panning of panel ends is required at ridge, hip and headwall conditions when the slope is less than 3:12.

Apply bituminous coating or other permanent separation materials on concealed panel surfaces where panels would otherwise be in direct contact with substrate materials that are noncompatible or could result

in corrosion or deterioration of either material or finishes.

Fabricate panel joints with captive gaskets or separator strips, which provide a tight seal and prevent metal-to-metal contact in a manner that will minimize noise from movements within panel system.

PANEL SUPPORTS AND ANCHORAGE

Secondary Framing: Provide the following secondary framing members:

Roof Purlin: "C"- or "Z"-shaped Sections fabricated from 0.0598-inch (16-gage) shop-painted, roll-formed steel. Depth of roof purlins shall be 6" unless otherwise indicated. Purlin spacers shall be fabricated from 0.0747-inch (14-gage) cold-formed galvanized steel Sections.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

EXAMINATION

All structural supports shall be in place and all sag rods, diagonal bracing and connections shall be tightened before work proceeds.

Field-check dimensions and check support alignment with a taut sting or wire; support misalignment will cause panel “oil-canning”.

Do not proceed until unsatisfactory conditions are corrected.

PANEL SUPPORTS AND ANCHORAGE

Purlin and other secondary structural panel support members and anchorage shall be installed in accordance with AISC Manual of Steel Construction "Code of Standard Practice."

PANEL INSTALLATION

General: Comply with manufacturers' instructions and recommendations for installation, as applicable to project conditions and supporting substrates. Anchor panels and other components of the work securely in place, with provisions for thermal and structural movement.

Field cutting of exterior panels by torch is not permitted.

Install panels with concealed fasteners.

Accessories: Install components required for a complete roof panel system, including trim, copings, corner units, ridge closures, clips, seam covers, battens, flashings, internal gutters, gutter drains, flexible sheet membrane flashing, pipe flashing, metal roof curbs, sealants, gaskets, fillers, closure strips, and similar items.

Joint Sealers: Install gaskets, joint fillers, and sealants where indicated and where required for weatherproof performance of panel systems.
