EXPANSION JOINT COVER ASSEMBLIES 05810 - 1

SECTION 05120 - STRUCTURAL STEEL

PART 1 - GENERAL

RELATED DOCUMENTS

Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Division 1 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.

SUMMARY

This Section includes structural steel.

Related Sections: The following Sections contain requirements that relate to this Section:

Division 5 Section "Steel Deck" for field installation of shear connections.

Division 5 Section "Metal Fabrications" for loose steel bearing plates, steel lintels, and miscellaneous steel framing.

REGULATIONS

All Work shall conform to applicable federal, state and city regulations.

All construction and furnishing of materials and equipment shall conform to OSHA regulations and requirements.

SUBMITTALS

General: Submit each item in this Article according to the Conditions of the Contract and Division 1 Specification Sections.

Product Data for each type of product specified.

Shop Drawings detailing fabrication of structural steel components.

Include details of cuts, connections, splices, camber, holes, and other pertinent data.

Indicate welds by standard AWS symbols, distinguishing between shop and field welds, and show size, length, and type of each weld.

Indicate type, size, and length of bolts, distinguishing between shop and field bolts. Identify high-strength bolted connections.

Include shop drawings signed and sealed by a qualified professional engineer responsible for

their preparation.

Mill test reports signed by manufacturers certifying that their products, including the following, comply with requirements.

Structural steel, including chemical and physical properties.

Bolts, nuts, and washers, including mechanical properties and chemical analysis.

Shear stud connectors.

Shop primers.

Non-shrink grout.

QUALITY ASSURANCE

Installer Qualifications: Engage an experienced Installer who has completed structural steel work similar in material, design, and extent to that indicated for this Project and with a record of successful in-service performance.

Fabricator Qualifications: Engage a firm experienced in fabricating structural steel similar to that indicated for this Project and with a record of successful in-service performance, as well as sufficient production capacity to fabricate structural steel without delaying the Work.

Fabricator must participate in the AISC Quality Certification Program and also be designated an AISC Certified Plant as follows:

Category: Category II, complex steel building structure.

Comply with applicable provisions of the following specifications and documents:

AISC's "Specification for Structural Steel Buildings--Allowable Stress Design and Plastic Design."

AISC's "Specification for Allowable Stress Design of Single-Angle Members."

AISC's "Seismic Provisions for Structural Steel Buildings."

ASTM A 6 (ASTM A 6M) "Specification for General Requirements for Rolled Steel Plates, Shapes, Sheet Piling, and Bars for Structural Use."

Research Council on Structural Connections' (RCSC) "Specification for Structural Joints Using ASTM A 325 or A 490 Bolts."

Professional Engineer Qualifications: A professional engineer who is legally authorized to practice in the jurisdiction where Project is located and who is experienced in providing engineering services of the kind indicated. Engineering services are defined as those performed for projects with structural steel framing that are similar to that indicated for this Project in material, design, and extent.

Welding Standards: Comply with applicable provisions of AWS D1.1 "Structural Welding Code--Steel."

For field welding operations, present evidence that each welder has satisfactorily passed AWS qualification tests for welding processes involved within five years of Notice to Proceed.

Preinstallation Conference: Conduct conference at Project site

DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

Deliver structural steel to Project site in such quantities and at such times to ensure continuity of installation.

Shipping Supports: All supports attached to structural steel members to provide support during shipping shall be of uniform size, installed securely, uniformly aligned, painted the same as specified for structural steel, and shall remain in place or shall be reviewed with Contracting Officer before removal.

Store materials to permit easy access for inspection and identification. Keep steel members off ground by using pallets, platforms, or other supports. Protect steel members and packaged materials from erosion and deterioration.

Store fasteners in a protected place. Clean and relubricate bolts and nuts that become dry or rusty before use.

Do not store materials on structure in a manner that might cause distortion or damage to members or supporting structures. Repair or replace damaged materials or structures as directed.

SEQUENCING

Supply anchorage items to be embedded in or attached to other construction without delaying the Work. Provide setting diagrams, templates, instructions, and directions, as required, for installation.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

MATERIALS

Metal Surfaces, General: For fabrication of work that will be exposed to view, use only materials that

are smooth and free of surface blemishes including pitting, rust and scale seam marks, roller marks, rolled trade names, and roughness. Remove such blemishes by grinding, or by welding and grinding, prior to cleaning, treating, and applying surface finishes.

Structural Steel Shapes, Plates, and Bars: As follows:

Carbon Steel: ASTM A 36.

High Strength Low-Alloy: ASTM A572 Grade 50 as indicated on plans.

Cold-Formed Structural Steel Tubing: ASTM A 500, Grade B, minimum 46,000 psi yield strength.

Steel Pipe: ASTM A 53, Grade B, minimum 35,000 psi yield strength.

Shear Connectors: ASTM A 108,Grade 1015 through 1020, headed stud type, cold finished carbon steel, AWS D1.1, Type B.

Anchor Rods, Bolts, Nuts, and Washers: As follows:

Unheaded Rods: ASTM A 36.

Headed Bolts: ASTM A 307, Grade A (ASTM F 568, Property Class 4.6); carbon-steel, hex-head bolts; and carbon-steel nuts.

Washers: ASTM A 36.

High-Strength Bolts, Nuts, and Washers: ASTM A 325 (ASTM A 325M), Type 1, heavy hex steel structural bolts, heavy hex carbon-steel nuts, and hardened carbon-steel washers.

Finish: Plain, uncoated.

Welding Electrodes: Comply with AWS requirements.

E70XX electrodes shall be used for all welding.

Direct Tension Indicating Washers: ASTM F959 - 94 as indicated on plans.

PRIMER

Primer: SSPC-Paint 11, 13 or 25; red iron oxide, zinc oxide, raw linseed oil and alkyd primer.

GROUT

Nonmetallic, Shrinkage-Resistant Grout: Premixed, nonmetallic, noncorrosive, nonstaining grout containing selected silica sands, portland cement, shrinkage compensating agents, plasticizing and

water-reducing agents, complying with ASTM C 1107, of consistency suitable for application, and a 30-minute working time.

FABRICATION

Design of Members and Connections: Details shown are typical; similar details apply to similar conditions, unless otherwise indicated. Verify dimensions at site.

Promptly notify Architect whenever design of members and connections for any portion of structure are not clearly indicated.

Fabricate and assemble structural steel in shop to greatest extent possible. Fabricate structural steel according to AISC specifications referenced in this Section and in Shop Drawings.

Camber structural steel members where indicated.

Mark and match-mark materials for field assembly.

Fabricate for delivery a sequence that will expedite erection and minimize field handling of structural steel.

Complete structural steel assemblies, including welding of units, before starting shop-priming operations.

Comply with fabrication tolerance limits of AISC's "Code of Standard Practice for Steel Buildings and Bridges" for structural steel.

Thermal Cutting: Perform thermal cutting by machine to greatest extent possible.

Plane thermally cut edges to be welded.

Finishing: Accurately mill ends of columns and other members transmitting loads in bearing.

Shear Connectors: Prepare steel surfaces as recommended by manufacturer of shear connectors. Use automatic and welding of headed-stud shear connectors according to AWS D1.1 and manufacturer's printed instructions.

Holes: Provide holes required for securing other work to structural steel framing and for passage of other work through steel framing members, as shown on Shop Drawings.

Reinforce openings as indicated on drawings.

Cut, drill, or punch holes perpendicular to metal surfaces. Do not flame-cut holes or enlarge holes by burning. Drill holes in bearing plates.

Weld threaded nuts to framing and other specialty items as indicated to receive other work.

SHOP CONNECTIONS

Shop install and tighten high-strength bolts according to RCSC's "Specification for Structural Joints Using ASTM A 325 or A 490 Bolts."

Bolts: ASTM A 325 (ASTM A 325M) high-strength bolts, unless otherwise indicated.

Connection Type: Snug tightened, unless indicated as slip-critical, direct-tension, or tensioned shear/bearing connections.

Weld Connections: Comply with AWS D1.1 for procedures, appearance and quality of welds, and methods used in correcting welding work.

Assemble and weld built-up sections by methods that will maintain true alignment of axes without warp.

SHOP PRIMING

Shop prime steel surfaces, except the following:

Surfaces embedded in concrete or mortar. Extend priming of partially embedded members to a depth of 2 inches.

Surfaces to be field welded.

Galvanized surfaces.

Surface Preparation: Clean surfaces to be painted. Remove loose rust, loose mill scale, and spatter, slag, or flux deposits. Prepare surfaces according to SSPC specifications as follows:

SSPC-SP 3 "Power Tool Cleaning" and SSPC-SP2 "Hand Tool Cleaning" for surfaces not accessible to power tools.

Priming: Immediately after surface preparation, apply primer according to manufacturer's instructions and at rate recommended by SSPC to provide a dry film thickness of not less than 1.5 mils. Use priming methods that result in full coverage of joints, corners, edges, and exposed surfaces.

Stripe paint corners, crevices, bolts, welds, and sharp edges.

Apply 2 coats of shop paint to inaccessible surfaces after assembly or erection.

SOURCE QUALITY CONTROL

Fabricator shall perform shop inspections and tests and shall prepare test reports.

Correct deficiencies in or remove and replace structural steel that inspections and test reports indicate do not comply with specified requirements.

Additional testing, at fabricator's expense, shall be performed to determine compliance of corrected Work with specified requirements.

Shop-bolted connections shall be tested and inspected according to RCSC's "Specification for Structural Joints Using ASTM A 325 or A 490 Bolts."

In addition to visual inspection, shop-welded connections shall be inspected and tested by an independent certified testing agency according to AWS D1.1 and the inspection procedures listed below:

Ultrasonic Inspection: ASTM E 164. 100% of full penetration welds.

Liquid Penetrant Inspection: ASTM E168. 100% of fillet welds of truss members.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

EXAMINATION

Before erection proceeds, and with the steel erector present, verify elevations of concrete and masonry bearing surfaces and locations of anchorages for compliance with requirements.

Do not proceed with erection until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

PREPARATION

Provide temporary shores, guys, braces, and other supports during erection to keep structural steel secure, plumb, and in alignment against temporary construction loads and loads equal in intensity to design loads. Remove temporary supports when permanent structural steel, connections, and bracing are in place, unless otherwise indicated.

ERECTION

Set structural steel accurately in locations and to elevations indicated and according to AISC specifications referenced in this Section.

Base and Bearing Plates: Clean concrete and masonry bearing surfaces of bond-reducing materials and roughen surfaces prior to setting base and bearing plates. Clean bottom surface of base and bearing plates.

Set base and bearing plates for structural members on wedges, shims, or other adjusting devices as required.

Tighten anchor bolts after supported members have been positioned and plumbed. Do not remove wedges or shims but, if protruding, cut off flush with edge of base or bearing plate prior to packing with grout.

Pack grout solidly between bearing surfaces and plates so no voids remain. Finish exposed surfaces, protect installed materials, and allow to cure.

Comply with manufacturer's instructions for proprietary grout materials.

Maintain erection tolerances of structural steel within AISC's "Code of Standard Practice for Steel Buildings and Bridges."

Align and adjust various members forming part of complete frame or structure before permanently fastening. Before assembly, clean bearing surfaces and other surfaces that will be in permanent contact. Perform necessary adjustments to compensate for discrepancies in elevations and alignment.

Level and plumb individual members of structure.

Establish required leveling and plumbing measurements on mean operating temperature of structure.

Make allowances for difference between temperature at time of erection and mean temperature at which structure will be when completed and in service.

Splice members only where shown on Structural Drawings or shown and approved on shop drawings.

Do not use thermal cutting during erection without prior approval by Architect/Engineer.

Finish sections thermally cut during erection equal to a sheared appearance.

Do not enlarge unfair holes in members by burning or by using drift pins. Ream holes that must be enlarged to admit bolts.

FIELD CONNECTIONS

Install and tighten non-high-strength anchor bolts.

All bolts set in concrete shall be furnished with double nuts and set with template.

Install and tighten high-strength bolts according to RCSC's "Specification for Structural Joints Using ASTM A 325 or A 490 Bolts."

Bolts: ASTM A 325 (ASTM A 325M) high-strength bolts, unless otherwise indicated.

Weld Connections: Comply with AWS D1.1 for procedures, appearance and quality of welds, and methods used in correcting welding work.

Comply with AISC specifications referenced in this Section for bearing, adequacy of temporary connections, alignment, and removal of paint on surfaces adjacent to field welds.

Assemble and weld built-up sections by methods that will maintain true alignment of axes without warp.

FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

Contractor shall engage an independent testing and inspecting agency to perform field inspections and tests and to prepare test reports.

Testing agency shall conduct and interpret tests and state in each report whether tested Work complies with or deviates from requirements.

Testing agency shall report test results promptly in writing to Contractor, Architect, and Contracting Officer.

Correct deficiencies in or remove and replace structural steel that inspections and test reports indicate do not comply with specified requirements.

Additional testing, at Contractor's expense, will be performed to determine compliance of corrected Work with specified requirements.

Field-bolted connections shall be tested and inspected according to RCSC's "Specification for Structural Joints Using ASTM A 325 or A 490 Bolts."

No less than 10% of bolted connections, nor less than two bolts selected at random in each bolted connection, shall be proof tested with an inspecting torque wrench.

In addition to visual inspection, field-welded connections shall be inspected and tested according to AWS D1.1 and the inspection procedures listed below:

Liquid Penetrant Inspection: ASTM E 165. 3% of total welds randomly selected by testing agency. Additionally test 100% of fillet welds of truss members.

Ultrasonic Inspection: ASTM E 164. 100% of full penetration welds.

CLEANING

Touchup Painting: Immediately after erection, clean field welds, bolted connections, and abraded areas of shop paint. Apply paint to exposed areas using same material as used for shop painting.

Apply by brush or spray to provide a minimum dry film thickness of 1.5 mils.

SECTION 05210 - STEEL JOISTS

PART 1 - GENERAL

RELATED DOCUMENTS

Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Division 1 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.

SUMMARY

This Section includes the following:

Steel joists and joist accessories for roof framing. Types of joists required are indicated on drawings.

Division 4 Section "Unit Masonry" for installing anchors set in unit masonry.

Division 5 Section "Structural Steel" for field quality-control procedures and tests.

Division 5 Section "Metal Fabrications" for loose steel bearing plates, steel lintels, and miscellaneous steel framing.

REGULATIONS

All Work shall conform to applicable federal, state and city regulations.

All construction and furnishing of materials and equipment shall conform to OSHA regulations and requirements.

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

Structural Performance: Engineer, fabricate, and erect joists and connections to withstand design loads within limits and under conditions required.

Design Loads: As indicated.

Engineering Responsibility: Engage a joist manufacturer who utilizes a qualified professional engineer to prepare design calculations, shop drawings, and other structural data for steel joists.

SUBMITTALS

General: Submit each item in this Article according to the Conditions of the Contract and Division 1 Specification Sections.

Product Data for each type of joist, accessory, and product specified.

Shop Drawings showing layout, mark, number, type, location, and spacings of joists. Include joining and anchorage details, bracing, bridging, accessories, splice and connection details, and attachments to other units of Work.

Indicate locations and details of anchorage devices and bearing plates to be embedded in other construction. Provide templates as required for installation of anchor bolts and metal bearing plates.

For joists indicated to comply with certain design loadings, include structural analysis data signed and sealed by the qualified professional engineer responsible for their preparation.

Material certificates signed by joist manufacturer certifying that joists comply with SJI's Specifications."

Welder certificates certifying that welders comply with requirements specified under the "Quality Assurance" Article.

QUALITY ASSURANCE

Manufacturer Qualifications: Engage a firm experienced in manufacturing joists similar to those indicated for this Project and that have a record of successful in-service performance.

Manufacturer must be certified by SJI to manufacture joists conforming to SJI standard specifications and load tables.

SJI Design Standard: Comply with recommendations of SJI's "Standard Specifications Load Tables and Weight Tables for Steel Joists and Joist Girders," applicable to types of joists indicated.

Code--Steel" and AWS D1.3 "Structural Welding Code--Sheet Steel."

For field welding operations, certify that each welder has satisfactorily passed AWS qualification tests for welding processes involved within five years of Notice to Proceed.

Inspection: Inspect joists in accordance with SJI "Specifications."

Joists welded in place are subject to inspection and testing. Defective work shall be removed

and replaced.

Performance Tests: If required, conduct performance tests in accordance with procedures described in SJI "Recommended Code of Standard Practice."

Professional Engineer Qualifications: A professional engineer who is legally authorized to practice in the jurisdiction where Project is located and who is experienced in providing engineering services of the kind indicated. Engineering services are defined as those performed for installations of joists that are similar to those indicated for this Project in material, design, and extent.

DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

Deliver, store, and handle joists as recommended in SJI's "Specifications."

Shipping Supports: All supports attached to steel joists to provide support during shipping shall be of uniform size, installed securely, uniformly aligned, painted the same as specified for steel joists, and shall remain in place or shall be reviewed with Contracting Officer before removal.

Protect joists from corrosion, deformation, excessive stresses and other damage during delivery, storage, and handling.

SEQUENCING

Deliver steel bearing plates and other devices to be built into concrete and masonry construction.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

MATERIALS

Steel: Comply with requirements of SJI's "Specifications" for chord and web section material.

Steel Bearing Plates: ASTM A 36 (ASTM A 36M).

High-Strength Bolts and Nuts: ASTM A 325 (ASTM A 325M), Type 1, heavy hex steel structural bolts, heavy hex carbon-steel nuts, and hardened carbon-steel washers.

Finish: Plain, noncoated.

Welding Electrodes: Comply with AWS standards.

E70XX electrodes shall be used for all welding.

PRIMERS

Primer: SSPC - Paint 15-68T, Type I, red oxide; Federal Specification TT-P-636, red oxide.

STEEL JOISTS

Manufacture joists according to SJI's "Specifications," with steel angle top and bottom chord members, of joist types, end arrangements, and top chord arrangements indicated.

Comply with AWS requirements and procedures for shop welding, appearance, quality of welds, and methods used in correcting welding work.

Provide holes in chord members where shown for securing other work to steel joists.

Extend top chords of joists where indicated, complying with SJI's "Specifications" and load tables.

JOIST ACCESSORIES

Bridging: Provide bridging anchors and number of rows of horizontal or diagonal bridging of material, size, and type required by SJI's "Specifications" for type of joist, chord size, spacing, and span.

Supply additional bridging to ensure stability of structure during construction period.

Provide bridging anchors for ends of bridging lines terminating at walls or beams.

Fabricate steel bearing plates with integral anchorages as indicated and finish as follows:

Finish: Shop prime paint.

Supply ceiling extensions, either extended bottom chord elements or a separate extension unit of sufficient strength to support ceiling construction. Extend ends to within one inch of finished wall surface, unless otherwise indicated.

Supply miscellaneous accessories, including splice plates and bolts required by the joist manufacturer to complete the joist installation.

SHOP PAINTING

Clean and remove loose scale, heavy rust, and other foreign materials from fabricated joists and accessories to be primed as follows:

Surface Preparation: Either hand tool cleaning, SSPC-SP 2, or power tool cleaning, SSPC-SP 3.

Apply one shop coat of primer to joists and joist accessories to be primed to provide a continuous, dry paint film thickness of not less than 1 mil.

Finish field painting of joists and joist accessories remaining exposed is included under Division 9 Section, “Painting”.

EXAMINATION

Examine supporting substrates, embedded bearing plates, and abutting structural framing, with Installer present, for compliance with requirements for installation tolerances and other conditions affecting performance of joists. Do not proceed with installation until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

INSTALLATION

Do not install joists until supporting construction is in place and secured.

Install joists and accessories plumb, square, and true to line; securely fasten to supporting construction according to SJI's "Specifications," joist manufacturer's recommendations, and the requirements of this Section.

Space, adjust, and align joists accurately in location before permanently fastening.

Install temporary bracing and bridging, connections, and anchors to ensure joists are stabilized during construction.

Anchors: Furnish anchor bolts, steel bearing plates, and other devices to be built into masonry construction.

Provide unfinished threaded fasteners for anchor bolts, unless strength bolts indicated.

Field weld joists to supporting steel framework and steel bearing plates. Coordinate welding sequence and procedure with placing of joists.

Comply with AWS requirements and procedures for welding, appearance and quality of welds, and methods used in correcting welding work.

Bolt joists to supporting steel framework using high-strength structural bolts, unless otherwise indicated.

Comply with the Research Council on Structural Connections' (RCSC) "Specification for

Structural Joints Using ASTM A 325 or ASTM A 490 Bolts" for high-strength structural bolt installation and tightening requirements.

Install and connect bridging concurrently with joist erection, before construction loads are applied.

Anchor ends of bridging lines at top and bottom chords where terminating at walls or beams.

Suspended Loads: Loads greater than 50 pounds shall be suspended from top chord panel points only.

FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

Testing Agency: A qualified independent testing agency employed and paid by Contractor shall perform field quality-control testing.

Testing agency shall report test results promptly and in writing to Contractor, Architect and Contracting Officer.

Testing and verification procedures shall be required of high-strength bolted connections and field welds.

High-strength, field-bolted connections shall be tested and verified according to procedures in RCSC's "Specification for Structural Joints Using ASTM A 325 or ASTM A 490 Bolts."

No less than 10% of bolted connections, nor less than two bolts selected at random at each bolted connection, shall be proof tested with an inspecting torque wrench.

Field welds shall be visually inspected.

In addition to visual inspection, field welds shall be inspected and tested according to AWS

D1.1 and the following procedures:

Liquid Penetrant Inspection: ASTM E 165. 3% of total welds randomly selected by testing agency.

Ultrasonic Testing: ASTM E 164. 100% of full penetration welds.

Correct deficiencies in Work that inspections and test reports have indicated are not in compliance with specified requirements.

Additional testing shall be performed to determine compliance of corrected Work with specified requirements.

REPAIRS AND PROTECTION

Touch Up Painting: Following installation, promptly clean, prepare, and prime or reprime field connections, rust spots, and abraded surfaces of prime-painted joists, accessories, bearing plates, and abutting structural steel.

Clean and prepare surfaces by hand tool cleaning, SSPC-SP 2, or power tool cleaning, SSPC-SP 3.

Apply a compatible primer of the same type as the shop primer used on adjacent surfaces.

Provide final protection and maintain conditions, in a manner acceptable to manufacturer and Installer, that ensure that joists and accessories are without damage or deterioration at the time of Substantial Completion.

QUALITY ASSURANCE

Installer Qualifications: Engage an experienced Installer who has completed steel deck similar in material, design, and extent to that indicated for this Project and with a record of successful performance.

Code--Steel" and AWS D1.3 "Structural Welding Code--Sheet Steel."

Certify that each welder has satisfactorily passed AWS qualification tests for welding processes involved. AWS qualification testing shall be no later than 5 years.

Fire-Test-Response Characteristics: Where indicated, provide steel deck panels identical to those tested as part of an assembly for fire resistance per ASTME E 119 by a testing and inspection agency performing testing and follow-up services, that is acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction.

Fire-Resistance Ratings: As indicated by design designations listed in UL "Fire Resistance Directory," or by Warnock Hersey or another testing and inspecting agency.

Labeling: Identify steel deck with appropriate markings of applicable testing and inspecting agency.

FM Listing: Provide steel roof deck evaluated by Factory Mutual and listed in Factory Mutual "Approval Guide" for Class 1 fire rating and Class 1-90 windstorm ratings.

DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

Protect steel deck from corrosion, deformation, and other damage during delivery, storage, and handling.

Stack steel deck on platforms or pallets and slope to provide drainage. Protect with a waterproof covering and ventilate to avoid condensation.

ACCESSORIES

General: Provide accessory materials for steel deck that comply with requirements indicated and recommendations of the steel deck manufacturer.

Side Lap Fasteners: Manufacturer's standard, corrosion-resistant, hexagonal washer head; self-drilling, EXPANSION JOINT COVER ASSEMBLIES 05810 - 19 carbon steel screws, No. 10 minimum diameter.

Rib Closure Strips: Manufacturer's standard vulcanized, closed-cell, synthetic rubber.

Miscellaneous Roof Deck Accessories: Steel sheet, 0.0359-inch-thick plates, finish strips, and reinforcing channels, of same material as roof deck.

Steel Sheet Accessories: ASTM A 446, G 60 (ASTM A 446M, Z 180) coating class, galvanized according to ASTM A 525 (ASTM A 525M).

PART 3 - EXECUTION

EXAMINATION

Examine supporting framing and field conditions for compliance with requirements for installation tolerances and other conditions affecting performance of steel deck.

PREPARATION

Locate decking bundles to prevent overloading of supporting members.

INSTALLATION, GENERAL

Install deck panels and accessories according to applicable specifications and commentary of SDI Publication No. 28, manufacturer's recommendations, requirements of this Section, and as indicated on Structural Drawings.

Install temporary shoring before placing deck panels when required to meet deflection limitations.

Place deck panels on supporting framing and adjust to final position with ends accurately aligned and bearing on supporting framing before being permanently fastened. Do not stretch or contract side lap interlocks.

Place deck panels flat and square and fasten to supporting framing without warp or deflection.

Cut and neatly fit deck panels and accessories around openings and other work projecting through or adjacent to the decking.

Provide additional reinforcement and closure pieces at openings as required for strength, continuity of decking, and support of other work.

Comply with AWS requirements and procedures for manual shielded metal arc welding, appearance and quality of welds, and methods used in correcting welding work.

Provide firestopping between bottom of steel deck and top of rated walls and partitions to maintain integrity of fire-resistive construction. Refer to Section 07270.

ROOF DECK INSTALLATION

Fasten roof deck panels to steel supporting members by arc spot (puddle) welds of the surface diameter indicated and as follows:

Weld Diameter: 5/8 inch nominal.

Weld Spacing: Space and locate welds as indicated on Structural Drawings.

Weld Washers: Install weld washers at each location on 22 gage deck.

Side Lap and Perimeter Edge Fastening: Fasten side laps and perimeter edges of panels between supports, at intervals indicated on structural drawings, using one of the following methods:

Mechanically fasten with self-drilling No. 10-diameter or larger carbon steel screws.

End Bearing: Install deck ends over supporting framing with a minimum end bearing of 1-1/2 inches with end joints as follows:

End Joints: Lapped 2 inches minimum.

Roof Receiver Pans: Install over openings provided in roof decking, and secure flanges to top of deck.

Space fasteners not more than 12 inches apart with at least one fastener at each corner.

Miscellaneous Roof Deck Accessories: Install finish strips, cover plates, end closures, and reinforcing channels according to deck manufacturer's recommendations. Weld to substrate to provide a complete deck installation.

Flexible Closure Strips: Install flexible closure strips over partitions, walls, and where indicated.

Install with adhesive according to manufacturer's instructions to ensure complete closure.

Provide firestopping as required to maintain integrity of fire-resistive construction.

REPAIRS AND PROTECTION

Galvanizing Repairs: Prepare and repair damaged galvanized coatings on both surfaces with galvanized repair paint according to ASTM A 780 and the manufacturer's instructions.

Touchup Painting: Wire brush, clean, and paint scarred areas, welds, and rust spots on both surfaces of installed deck panels.

Touch up painted surfaces with same type of shop paint used on adjacent surfaces.

Where shop-painted surfaces are exposed, apply touchup paint to blend into adjacent surfaces.

Provide final protection and maintain conditions to ensure steel decking is without damage or deterioration at time of Substantial Completion.

SYSTEM PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

Structural Performance of Handrails and Railing Systems: Design, engineer, fabricate, and install handrails and railing systems to comply with requirements of ASTM E 985 for structural performance based on testing performed in accordance with ASTM E 894 and E 935.

Ship’s Ladder: Capable of withstanding a uniform load of 100 lbf per sq. ft. or a concentrated load of 300 lbf on a area of 4 sq. inches located in the center of the tread, whichever produces the greater stress.

Access Platform: Capable of withstanding a uniform load of 100 lbf per sq. ft.

SUBMITTALS

Product data for products used in miscellaneous metal fabrications, including paint products and grout.

Shop drawings detailing fabrication and erection of each metal fabrication indicated. Include plans, elevations, sections, and details of metal fabrications and their connections. Show anchorage and accessory items. Provide templates for anchors and bolts specified for installation under other Sections.

Where installed metal fabrications are indicated to comply with certain design loadings, include structural computations, material properties, and other information needed for structural analysis that has been signed and sealed by the qualified professional engineer who was responsible for their preparation.

Samples representatives of materials and finished products as may be requested by Architect.

Welder certificates certifying that welders comply with requirements specified under "Quality Assurance" article.

For field welding operations, certify that each welder has satisfactorily passed AWS qualification tests for welding process involved. AWS qualification testing shall be no later than 5 years.

QUALITY ASSURANCE

Fabricator Qualifications: Firm experienced in successfully producing metal fabrications similar to that indicated for this Project.

Qualify welding processes and welding operators in accordance with AWS D1.1 "Structural Welding Code - Steel"; D1.3 "Structural Welding Code - Sheet Steel"; and, D1.2 "Structural Welding Code - Aluminum."

PROJECT CONDITION

Field Measurements: Check actual locations of walls and other construction to which metal fabrications must fit, by accurate field measurements before fabrication; show recorded measurements on final shop drawings. Coordinate fabrication schedule with construction progress to avoid delay of Work.

Where field measurements cannot be made without delaying the Work, guarantee dimensions and proceed with fabrication of products without field measurements. Coordinate construction to ensure that actual opening dimensions correspond to guaranteed dimensions. Allow for trimming and fitting.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

FERROUS METALS

Metal Surfaces, General: For metal fabrications exposed to view upon completion of the Work, provide materials selected for their surface flatness, smoothness, and freedom from surface blemishes.

Do not use materials whose exposed surfaces exhibit pitting, seam marks, roller marks, rolled trade names, roughness, and, for steel sheet, variations in flatness exceeding those permitted by reference standards for stretcher-leveled sheet.

Steel Plates, Shapes, and Bars: ASTM A 36.

Steel Bars for Gratings: ASTM A 509 or ASTM A 36.

Steel Tubing: Product type (manufacturing method) and as follows:

Cold-Formed Steel Tubing: ASTM A 500, grade as indicated below:

Grade B, unless otherwise indicated or required for design loading.

Uncoated Structural Steel Sheet: Product type (manufacturing method), quality, and grade, as follows:

GROUT

Nonshrink Nonmetallic Grout: Premixed, factory-packaged, nonstaining, noncorrosive, nongaseous grout complying with CE CRD-C 621. Provide grout specifically recommended by manufacturer for interior and exterior applications of type specified in this section.

Products: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide one of the following:

"Euco N-S Grout"; Euclid Chemical Co.

"Crystex"; L&M Construction Chemicals, Inc.

"Masterflow 713"; Master Builders.

"Five Star Grout"; U.S. Grout Corp.

FASTENERS

General: Provide zinc-coated fasteners for exterior use or where built into exterior walls. Select fasteners for the type, grade, and class required.

Bolts and Nuts: Regular hexagon head type, ASTM A 307, Grade A.

Lag Bolts: Square head type, FS FF-B-561.

Machine Screws: Cadmium plated steel, FS FF-S-92.

Wood Screws: Flat head carbon steel, FS FF-S-111.

Plain Washers: Round, carbon steel, FS FF-W-92.

Drilled-In Expansion Anchors: Expansion anchors complying with FS FF-S-325, Group VIII (anchors, expansion, [nondrilling]), Type I (internally threaded tubular expansion anchor); and machine bolts complying with FS FF-B-575, Grade 5.

Shop Primer for Ferrous Metal: Manufacturer's or fabricator's standard, fast-curing, lead-free, universal modified alkyd primer selected for good resistance to normal atmospheric corrosion, for compatibility with finish paint systems indicated, and for capability to provide a sound foundation for field-applied topcoats despite prolonged exposure complying with performance requirements of FS

TT-P-664.

Bituminous Paint: Cold-applied asphalt mastic complying with SSPC-Paint 12 except containing no asbestos fibers.

Zinc Chromate Primer: FS TT-P-645.

CONCRETE FILL AND REINFORCING MATERIALS

Concrete Materials and Properties: Comply with requirements of Division 3 section “Cast in Place Concrete” for normal weight, ready-mix concrete with minimum 28-day compressive strength of 3,000 psi.

Reinforcing Bars: ASTM A 615, Grade 60, unless otherwise indicated.

FABRICATION, GENERAL

Form metal fabrications from materials of size, thickness, and shapes indicated but not less than that needed to comply with performance requirements indicated. Work to dimensions indicated, using proven details of fabrication and support. Use type of materials indicated or specified for various components of each metal fabrication.

Form exposed work true to line and level with accurate angles and surfaces and straight sharp edges.

Shear and punch metals cleanly and accurately. Remove burrs.

Ease exposed edges to a radius of approximately 1/32 inch, unless otherwise indicated. Form bent-metal corners to smallest radius possible without causing grain separation or otherwise impairing work.

Remove sharp or rough areas on exposed traffic surfaces.

Weld corners and seams continuously to comply with AWS recommendations and the following:

Use materials and methods that minimize distortion and develop strength and corrosion resistance of base metals.

Obtain fusion without undercut or overlap.

Remove welding flux immediately.

At exposed connections, finish exposed welds and surfaces smooth and blended so that no roughness shows after finishing and contour of welded surface matches those adjacent.

Form exposed connections with hairline joints, flush and smooth, using concealed fasteners wherever possible. Use exposed fasteners of type indicated or, if not indicated, Phillips flat-head (countersunk) screws or bolts. Locate joints where least conspicuous.

Provide for anchorage of type indicated; coordinate with supporting structure. Fabricate and space anchoring devices to provide adequate support for intended use.

Shop Assembly: Preassemble items in shop to greatest extent possible to minimize field splicing and assembly. Disassemble units only as necessary for shipping and handling limitations. Use connections that maintain structural value of joined pieces. Clearly mark units for reassembly and coordinated installation.

Cut, reinforce, drill and tap miscellaneous metal work as required to receive finish hardware, screws, and similar items.

Fabricate joints that will be exposed to weather in a manner to exclude water, or provide weep holes where water may accumulate.

ROUGH HARDWARE

Furnish bent or otherwise custom fabricated bolts, plates, anchors, hangers, dowels, and other miscellaneous steel and iron shapes as required for framing and supporting woodwork, and for anchoring or securing woodwork to concrete or other structures. Straight bolts and other stock rough hardware items are specified in Division 6 sections.

Fabricate items to sizes, shapes, and dimensions required. Furnish malleable-iron washers for heads and nuts which bear on wood structural connections; elsewhere, furnish steel washers.

STEEL LADDERS

General: Fabricate ladders for the locations shown, with dimensions, spacings, details and anchorages as indicated. Comply with requirements of ANSI A 14.3.

Side Rails: Continuous steel flat bars, ½ inch x 2-1/2 inches, with eased edges, spaced 18 inches apart.

Bar Rungs: Round steel bars, 3/4 inch diameter, spaced 12 inches o.c.

Fit rungs in centerline of side rails, plug weld and grind smooth on outer rail faces.

Support each ladder at top and bottom and at intermediate points spaced not more than 5'-0" o.c. by means of welded or bolted steel brackets.

Size brackets to support design dead and live loads indicated and to hold centerline of ladder rungs clear of the wall surface by not less than 7 inches.

Extend side rails 42 inches above top rung, and return rails to wall or structure unless other secure handholds are provided. If the adjacent structure does not extend above the top rung, goose-neck the extended rails back to the structure to provide secure ladder access.

SHIP'S LADDERS

Provide ship's ladders where indicated. Fabricate of open type construction with structural steel channel stringers, steel pipe handrails, and open steel grating treads, unless otherwise indicated.

Provide brackets and fittings for installation.

LOOSE BEARING AND LEVELING PLATES

Provide loose bearing and leveling plates for steel items bearing on masonry or concrete construction, made flat, free from warps or twists, and of required thickness and bearing area. Drill plates to receive anchor bolts and for grouting as required.

LOOSE STEEL LINTELS

Fabricate loose structural steel lintels from steel angles and shapes of size indicated for openings and recesses in masonry walls and partitions at locations indicated.

Size loose lintels for equal bearing of one inch per foot of clear span but not less than 8 inches bearing at each side of openings, unless otherwise indicated.

Fabricate with insulation placed between steel members as indicated.

MISCELLANEOUS FRAMING AND SUPPORTS

General: Provide steel framing and supports for applications indicated or which are not a part of structural steel framework, as required to complete work.

Fabricate units to sizes, shapes, and profiles indicated and required to receive adjacent other construction retained by framing and supports.
