2.7 SAPLING TREES

Sapling trees (Large Diameter) will be planted at final stabilization with warm season grasses. Tree species will consist of equal number of groups from the Standard (Std.) Seedlings, Large Diameter; and Wildlife Species (no diameter specified) as listed in the TDF Form. Sapling trees would be planted at a rate of 300 stems per acre and in 3-ft of soil (2-ft soil and 1-ft top soil).

2.7.1 Maintenance

Maintenance will include, but is not limited to, the watering, maintenance and replanting to maintain the acceptable sapling tree survivability of 75 percent for one full year after the completion of construction, eradicating weeds; maintaining the performance of the erosion control materials and mulch; replacement of dead, missing, or non-viable sapling trees; repair of soil, and protecting sapling trees from human and animal activities. A sapling tree inspection to document sapling tree survival at the end one full growing season (generally April through October) shall be scheduled with the Contracting Officer at least two weeks in advance. It is anticipated this would occur just prior to the first hard frost (generally October to November) so that leaves would be present on deciduous plants.

Furnish written instructions containing drawings and other necessary information to the Contracting Officer, describing the care of the planted sapling trees including when and where maintenance should occur and the procedures for material replacement. Instructions shall describe the methods for specific maintenance activities and equipment and tools required for such efforts. Requirements on safety and regulations shall be included.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 INSTALLATION

It is the intent of these specifications that topsoiling, fertilizing, liming, seeding and mulching shall constitute continuous construction. Stones larger than 2 inches in diameter, roots, cables, wire, and other material that might hinder the work or subsequent maintenance shall be removed prior to topsoil placement. New channelized slopes, new embankments, and any other areas directed by the Contracting Officer, which are to be seeded shall be covered with stockpiled topsoil to a uniform depth of not less than 12 inches. The Contractor shall, at his expense, preserve, protect, replace or do such work as is necessary to maintain the topsoil in a satisfactory and acceptable condition from the time of placing until final acceptance.
