About this file

This document is a briefing overview of the Artillery Proof Gun Stand (PGS), an interoperability platform developed by the U.S. Government and managed by the Joint Program Executive Office (JPEO) for Armaments & Ammunition under the Defense Armament Center (DEVCOM).

The PGS is a hard-mounted, modular platform engineered for a 30-year service life that accepts and fires variable cannon configurations ranging from 105mm to 155mm (23-58 caliber length cannons) through use of interchangeable "Tube Sleeve" adapters. The system features an elevation operational range from -2.5° to 72° and a full 360° traverse capability. The platform was initially fielded in 2023 with additional fielding planned for 2025. The PGS is designed to eliminate the need for using operational weapon systems for testing purposes and mitigate wear and tear on existing systems. Primary applications include ammunition evaluation (new/foreign ammunition, lot acceptance testing, ammunition interchangeability), cannon evaluation (cannon proofing, interior ballistics assessment), and interoperability testing. The system separates into three subsystems for transportability, installs in approximately four hours, complies with U.S. and European highway standards, and fits within a standard 40-foot ISO container. Current cannon configurations support M776 and M199 cannons, with additional configurations in development. Cannon integration requires customer-provided inputs including interface control drawings, pressure-versus-time curves, muzzle brake characteristics, and breech operating descriptions, followed by USG engineering studies to develop cannon kits with components such as recoil dynamics evaluations, tube sleeve adapters, and tube porting for standardized internal ballistics data acquisition.
