C.0.2 BELMONT-PAUL WOMAN’S EQUALITY NATIONAL MONUMENT
The National Park Service (NPS) Belmont Paul Woman’s Equality National Monument (BEPA) is operated by the National Capital Area (NCA) National Mall and Memorial Parks (NAMA). The Belmont Paul Woman’s Equality National Monument was constructed for the Sewall Family c. 1800 and is attributed to Baltimore architect, Leonard Harbough.
In 1929, wealthy benefactor, Alva Vanderbilt Belmont, purchased the residence to serve as headquarters for the National Woman’s Party (NWP), who promoted women’s equality and a woman’s right to vote. In 1974, the house was designated as a National Historic Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in recognition of the National Woman’s Party’s important work. The Belmont-Paul House was acquired by NPS from the National Woman’s Party in 2016. At this time, President Barrack Obama designated the property a National Monument for its role commemorating the 19th Amendment and the women’s right to vote. Throughout its history, the BEPA house has undergone numerous rehabilitations over time, including a stable, now connected to the main house and serving as a library.
