What’s Consuming Power?

BLUE FORCE

TRACKER

Changes in the Power Approach Previous APUs were for stationary power only

Future APUs will be used on-the-move.
Take the electrical load off the vehicle engine
Provide more power at low speeds

General Requirements

Operation on Tactical Fuels – DF-2, JP-8, ULSD, etc.
APUs will draw fuel from the vehicle fuel tank
NO special fuels at this time
Self priming, 6+ vertical feet
Voltage Connection – DC is the primary goal at this time, AC options are a plus.
APU must connect and operate with the vehicle’s existing DC bus.
Expect to find various battery types.
MIL-STD-1275
Temperature Ranges
Full power up to 131°F
Start and operate at -40°F w/o external assist
Don’t forget Solar Loading
Self-cooling
Altitude
Full power up to 4,000+ ft.
Operation up to 12,000 ft.
Sand and dust filtration
Fully Enclosed
External mounting (increased vibrations)
No armor at this time
Multiple mounting options
Vibrations
Primary Roads – Paved Roads – 10%
Secondary Roads – Loose Gravel – 20%
Trails – Unimproved, seldom traveled – 30%
Cross County – No man-made trails – 40%
Noise Requirements
< 70 dBA @ 7 meters
Systems will be used for QUIET watch
Other Requirements
Local/Remote control
Long life (5000+ hours)
Quick start capable (<5 minutes)
Various electromagnetic interference requirements

Power Range

NO SET POWER REQUIREMENT
APUs are needed for various platforms with differing needs.
Current areas of interest
3 to 5 kW (DC only)
10 to 15 kW (DC with AC options)
