Scott Rackey - President CTP Hydrogen Corporation 131 Flanders Road Westborough, MA 01581 508-898-2223 www.ctphydrogen.com High Temperature Fuel Cell (SOFC) Based Auxiliary Power Unit Industry Day August 11, 2008

The Case for Fuel Cells Multi-billion dollar market for portable and remote power, but:

Limits access to power in multiple applications Batteries

Limited energy
Slow to recharge
Heavy
Hazardous
Expensive

Engine Gen-Sets

High emissions:
NOx & Particulates
CO
Loud
Inefficient
Short life

The Problem with Fuel Cells: Fuel!

Hydrogen fuel cells already work well, if provided with pure hydrogen

Most are poisoned by Carbon Monoxide All are poisoned by Sulfur

Transporting and storing Hydrogen is typically not economic due to the high cost of compression or liquefaction
SOFCs run on hydrocarbon fuels, but “reforming” them into sulfur-free syn-gas is challenging

Until now…

Multi-Step Hydrocarbon Reforming

Steam SMR Reactor Shift Reactor PrOx Reactor De-Sulfurizer Pd or PSA Separator Fuel Air Exhaust H2

Single-Step Hydrocarbon Reforming

CTP H2 Reactor

Fuel Air Exhaust

New “Single-Step Conversion” process

Based on proprietary new material
Pure H2 generated

(physically isolated from fuel impurities)

Fully Sulfur tolerant
No need for current collection – far easier and more robust than SOFC

Interfacing with SOFC - Advantages No Desulfurizer

Fuel-to-electric efficiency (DC out / LHV in):

38% with POX gasification 54% with steam gasification

Enables Smaller / Lower cost SOFC (due to higher power density)

Pure H2 Fuel Low "single pass" fuel utilization (recycling results in 100% overall utilization) Shared BOP components

Interfacing with SOFC - Advantages Greater SOFC robustness

No nickel sulfidation No anode coking No nickel oxidation during start up or shut down

Superior load following

Idles with zero flow Zero to full output in < 5 seconds

Better water management for the reformer

SOFC Anode and reformer fuel-side exhaust water recaptured Water-neutral system possible

Currently Focusing on kW-Scale Systems

Large cell manufacturing process working well
BOP and reactor fabrication largely complete
1 kW Demonstration expected at end of August

Proposed 2 kW system

Costs Drop Quickly with Scale Cost/unit ($000) Prototype 1 MW/yr 10 MW/yr 250 W Generator 2 kW Reformer

CTP Team 10 People

Technology focused

60 years FC experience

Strategic Partners Navy - SBIR Phase II

Operation on diesel/JP5 Scale-up to 1 - kW

Boston University – Dr. Gopalan & Dr. Pal

Development of high-performance materials Multi-physics modeling of MEIC reforming process
