About this file

This document is a Task Group Instruction (TGI) for cleaning, inspecting, repairing, and preserving the clean salt water ballast tank (9-98-1-W) on the USS Blue Ridge (LCC-19). The work is scheduled to take place between 7/21/2026 and 10/21/2027, with the specific task involving a comprehensive maintenance procedure for a 75,833-gallon ballast tank located in multiple ship compartments, including the Intel Storeroom and Chemical Warfare Defense Equipment Storeroom.

The instruction details extensive technical requirements, including a visual inspection of existing preservation coating, marking corroded or damaged areas, general cleaning at Level III, manhole cover installation, welding and repair of stripped bolting ring holes, and plate repairs. Special requirements include SURFMEPP cleanliness standards and working within a fire zone boundary that requires a non-flammable closure. The project involves multiple technical steps such as vee-out and weld repairs, base metal weld buildup, plate and stiffener replacements, and surface preservation, with specific measurements like repairing one linear foot of welds, 60 square inches of plate defects, 10 square feet of deteriorated plate, and 4 linear feet of defective stiffeners.
