About this file

This Task Group Instruction (TGI) details a maintenance and preservation project for the Clean Salt Water Ballast Tank (9-64-2-W) on the USS Blue Ridge (LCC-19). The project is scheduled to begin on 7/21/2026 and complete by 10/21/2027, involving comprehensive cleaning, inspection, repair, and preservation of a single ballast tank with an 85,204-gallon capacity. Key tasks include commercial blast cleaning, visual inspection for structural integrity, repair of deteriorated welds and plates (including up to one linear foot of weld repair and 60 square inches of base metal weld buildup), and applying new preservation coatings.

The work will be performed in multiple stages, with specific requirements for Level III general cleaning, manhole cover installation, and surface preparation according to SSPC-SP 6 standards. Special requirements include working near a fire zone boundary, necessitating a non-flammable closure, and potential lead hazard considerations. The project will be supported by SRF-JRMC (Ship Repair Facility), which will provide services including crane and rigging, utility services, safety inspections, and technical support. The total interior surface area to be treated is 13,500 square feet, encompassing tank surfaces, manhole cover plates, and bolting rings.
