About this file

This document is a Lorax Plant Tree List & Specifications guide prepared by the AM Planning & Environmental Department at NAVSTA Rota for landscaping implementation dated March 10, 2022.

The document provides a comprehensive tree species selection guide for landscaping projects at Naval Station Rota in Spain, organized by average height categories (40+ feet, 10-40 feet, and 0-10 feet) and application typologies (corridor, parking lot, and infill). Ten tree species are detailed, including White Poplar, Nettle Tree, Ash Tree, London Plane Tree, Olive Tree, Hawthorn, Italian Buckthorn, Myrtle, Narrow-leaved Mock Privet, and Retama, with specifications on height, spread, soil preferences, and environmental suitability. Environmental mitigation requirements mandate compliance with Junta de Andalucía archaeological site protection standards and the Protected Species Protocol for the Common Chameleon. Tree removal requires a 3:1 replacement ratio with saplings (not seedlings) planted within one year or before 90% project completion, including subterranean soil setup and temporary watering systems for at least one year, with an approximate survey cost of $100,000. Engineering specifications (SPECS-02) include detailed technical drawings for typical tree planting installations, irrigation systems, diffusers, tree protection barriers, and drip irrigation installation methods. Junta de Andalucía authorization documents (SPECS-01) provide regulatory approval for ornamental tree and species reforestation work at the naval base, outlining permitted work periods, residue handling procedures, and general conditions for forestry operations.

Environmental Mitigation DD1391 Implementation

Boilerplate Paragraph Blocks 11/Notes Abridged version Block 10/Bottom area

Compliance with Junta de Andalucia requirements for archaeological site protection. This may include having an archaeological monitor on site during earth moving activities.

Landscaping and all planted vegetation will be planted in accordance with the NAVSTA Rota Lorax/Tree and Streets Plan (2022) and the NAVSTA Rota Landscaping Guidelines (2016). Areas of Stone Pine and other Andalusian forest tree species must be avoided for new construction to the maximum extent possible. If trees must be removed, approval must be granted by the installation Environmental Division. Trees that are approved for removal shall be replaced at a 3:1 ratio at locations identified in the Lorax/Tree & Streets Plan.

The replacement trees must be saplings (not seedlings) and shall include subterranean soil set up and temporary watering system to ensure vegetation life for at least 1 year. All trees shall be planted within 1 year of removing the trees or before 90% Project completeness. Include survey of replacement tree planting locations (approximate cost $100,000).

The Protected Species Protocol for the Common Chameleon (2016) will be followed, as applicable.

This includes submitting a plan for anticipated vegetation removal and site restoration and a survey of potentially suitable chameleon habitat in the project area. If chameleons are present in the project area they must be relocated by a specialist in advance of construction activities.

White Poplar Tree (Populus alba) Salicaceae Native

Ornamental fast growing tree, tolerant of maritime exposure.

Aggressive surface roots possible (PFAF, 2015).

Could be used in areas with water retention. This species is a good soil stabilizer and recommended for erosion control.

Height: up to 65ft Spread: 40ft to 50ft

Nettle Tree (Celtis australis) Ulmaceae Native

Very long lived trees, adaptable to rocky and loose soils, preferring a good fertile well-drained loamy soil. Very drought resistant. Loto fruit tree (PFAF, 2015). This species is a good soil stabilizer and recommended for erosion control.

Height: to 65ft Spread: to 32ft
