About this file
This document is a request for exemption from certain Unified Facilities Criteria for two military construction projects at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point in North Carolina. Specifically, the request is to allow parking F-35 aircraft 170 feet nose-to-nose and 150 feet between sunshades instead of the required 200 feet, eliminate the requirement for a peripheral taxi lane fronting the hangar, reduce the distance from the hangar to aircraft sunshades to 115 feet instead of 200 feet, and permit jet blast exhaust temperatures to exceed 100 degrees F even at 200 feet separation. The rationale provided is that the site constraints at MCAS Cherry Point would otherwise force expansion of the aircraft parking apron or reduce current base operations. Mitigation measures will be implemented to address exhaust temperature and velocity concerns for aircraft exiting and turning from sunshades. Approval of Exemption Request Number M00146-E01-21 is recommended to be forwarded to the Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command for consideration.

requested to permit F-35 aircraft to be parked 170 feet nose-to-nose (150 feet between sunshades) per enclosure (2) maintaining 200 feet tail-to-tail, eliminate the requirement for a peripheral taxilane fronting the hangar, reduce the distance to the aircraft sunshade from 200 feet to 115 feet from the hangar, and allow jet blast exhaust temperatures exceed the 100 degree F level even at 200 feet separation. References (b) and (c) provide dimensions for Parking Apron Spacing and requirements for Peripheral Taxilanes. The F-35B 90 Degree Parking Apron Spacing (Interior Taxilane) is 200 feet and 150 feet width for Peripheral Taxilane. The elimination of the peripheral taxi lane results in an aircraft engine distance to the hangar door face of approximately 150 feet as it taxis outbound.
2. This request is made for the following reasons:
a. Due to site constraints, the exhaust from the F-35s on the eastern most line will take up ramp space and make apron parking for transient and detachment aircraft unavailable.
b. Jet blast temperatures equal to or less than 100 degrees F cannot be met.
c. Without spacing waivers, MCAS Cherry Point would be forced to execute new construction to expand apron space in order to maintain current operations.
d. Eliminating the taxilane fronting the Hangar will reduce the time needed for flight line personnel to shelter as quickly as possible during Thunderstorm Warnings.
e. Eliminating the taxilane fronting the hangar will have the added benefit of reducing the movement of heavy maintenance equipment to and from the flightline allowing more time on actual aircraft maintenance.
3. Enclosure (3) highlights that similar mitigations have proven effective against excessive heat due to reduced UFC apron clearances.
MCAS Miramar implemented apron aircraft separation distances of 145 feet nose-to-nose and 125 feet between Aircraft Protective Environmental Shelters and no issues with maneuvering or excessive

heat from aircraft exhaust have occurred. Since movement of aircraft in and out of the hangar is achieved with tow tractors, as with the MC-4 Triton, no peripheral taxilane is needed. The UFC allows for a minimum structure separation of 100 feet of the edge of a fixed wing aircraft parking apron.
4. Enclosure (2) outlines specific operational mitigation measures that will be implemented to address F-35 exhaust temperature and velocity concerns when aircraft are exiting and turning out of the sunshades parking positions.
