About this file
This is a structural calculations document prepared by Vector Structural Engineering, LLC for the City of Milpitas in support of a scoreboard replacement project at three municipal locations: Dixon Landing Park, Milpitas Sports Center, and Cardoza Park. The calculations address the design and installation of seven new Daktronics scoreboards, specifically analyzing structural adequacy under wind and seismic loads per the California Building Code (2022 Edition) and ASCE 7-16 standards. The project involves two scoreboard models—AD Panels and a larger Scoreboard unit—with design criteria including a basic wind speed of 95 mph (3-second gust), seismic design category E, and site class D soils. The structural analysis encompasses weld group connections, bolted shear and tension connections, mounting details, and member bending capacity across eight distinct mounting configurations. All structural steel components are specified as ASTM A992 (50 KSI) wide flange shapes or ASTM A36 materials with ASTM F3125 Grade A325 bolts, and all steel surfaces require galvanization per ASTM A123 and ASTM F2329 standards. The calculations confirm that all connection designs, including seat angles, bolted connections, and channel flexure members, are adequate under the design loads, with stress ratios ranging from 9.3% to 73.2% of capacity.
The document establishes the maximum design wind load at 53.0 psf (factored to 0.6W) and maximum dead load at 12.0 psf, with tributary areas and specific mounting loads identified for each of the eight mounting details. Special inspections are required for high-strength bolting and field welding per the 2022 CBC Chapter 17, though steel fabrication may proceed without special inspection if performed by an approved registered fabricator. No field welding is permitted unless specifically noted. The structural calculations are proprietary to Vector Structural Engineering, LLC and Daktronics Inc., with restrictions on reproduction or reuse without written authorization, and serve as the technical basis for the City's procurement of scoreboard installation services with a mandatory 75-calendar-day project completion timeline from the Notice to Proceed.

2 All steel wide flange shapes to be per ASTM A992 (50 KSI), U.N.O.
3 All other structural steel shapes & plates shall be per ASTM A36, U.N.O.
4 All bolts for steel-to-steel connections shall be per ASTM F3125 GR. A325 U.N.O.
5 All bolted connections shall be tightened per the "turn-of-nut" method as defined by AISC.
The contractor shall verify dimensions, conditions and elevations before starting work. The engineer shall be notified immediately if any discrepancies are found.
Structural design is based on the California Building Code, 2022 Edition (2021 IBC) and the ASCE 7-16 standard.

Structural Engineering, LLC, and may be neither wholly nor partially copied or reproduced without the prior written permission of Vector Structural Engineering, LLC.
All steel surfaces shall be galvanized in accordance with ASTM A123 and ASTM F2329 standards, thoroughly coated with a zinc-rich primer, or otherwise protected as noted on the structural drawings.
All structural framing members shall be adequately shored and braced during erection and until full lateral and vertical support is provided by adjoining members.
All welding shall be performed by certified welders in accordance with the latest edition of the American Welding
Society (AWS) D1.1. Utilize minimum E70XX low-hydrogen electrode U.N.O. or where higher strength electrode is required by AWS D1.1
These calculations are limited to the structural members shown in these calculations only. The connection of the members shown in these calculations to the existing structure shall be by others, with the exception of those explicitly shown on the drawings.
The contractor shall be responsible for compliance with local construction safety orders. Approval of shop drawings by the architect or structural engineer shall not be construed as accepting this responsibility.
The typical notes and details shall apply in all cases unless specifically detailed elsewhere. Where no detail is shown, the construction shall be as shown for other similar work and as required by the building code.

• Periodic special inspection of high-strength bolting
No structural observation is required.
• Special inspection of field welding where permitted (periodic or continuous as required by the 2022 CBC).
Special inspection is not required for work of a minor nature or as warranted by conditions in the jurisdiction as approved by the building official. Thus, inspection items above may be waived as deemed appropriate by the building official.
Steel fabrication shall be performed on the premises of a fabricator registered and approved as required by the
2022 CBC to perform such work without special inspection.
No field welding shall be permitted unless noted otherwise.
The following special inspections, where applicable, shall be required per Chapter 17 of the 2022 CBC.
