About this file
This document is a Statement of Work (SOW) for the Argon Distribution Equipment for the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) project. The Argon Distribution Equipment serves to transfer gaseous and liquid argon, as well as limited amounts of gaseous and liquid nitrogen, throughout the underground portion of the LBNF located 4,850 feet below the surface at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, South Dakota. The equipment will also install hardware and equipment delivered by partners as In-Kind Contributions, provide dry nitrogen gas to the cryostat insulation space, inject xenon gas, connect the Liquid Argon Purification and Purity Monitors, and analyze the gaseous nitrogen content of the gaseous argon from the surface during cryostat filling.
The SOW is broken down into seven task and delivery orders, including supply of vacuum-jacketed and uninsulated pipes and valves, miscellaneous equipment for the detector caverns and central utility cavern, and installation of in-kind contributions. Key requirements include material compatibility, leak tightness, thermal insulation, component interfaces, and considerations for the underground installation. The Argon Distribution Equipment is a critical part of the LBNF/DUNE project, which aims to make transformative discoveries in neutrino physics and astrophysics.

4 Introduction LBNF (http:/lbnf-dune.fnal.gov/) will provide the infrastructure necessary to support the massive neutrino detectors located deep underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, SD.
The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) will employ four (4) such detectors, housed in cryostats requiring almost 70,000 tons of liquid argon (LAr), about 17,500 tons for each cryostat. DUNE (http://www.dunescience.org/) is expected to achieve transformative discoveries, making definitive determinations of neutrino properties, examining the dynamics of supernovae that produced the heavy elements necessary for life, and probing the possibility of proton decay.
5 Scope of the Supply
5.1 Scope of the Supply description
The Argon Distribution Equipment (hereafter referred to, in whole or in part, as “the supply”) serves:
• To transfer gaseous and liquid argon throughout the underground portion of the LBNF, housed 4850 ft (1478 m) below the surface level of the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF).
• To transfer, in limited capacity, gaseous and liquid nitrogen (for regeneration) throughout the underground portion of the LBNF.
• As a connection between the various other argon subsystems at the LBNF for the ultimate purpose of building and maintaining a clean reservoir of LAr within the LBNF cryostats.
• To install hardware and equipment delivered by partners as In-Kind Contributions (IKC).
• To provide dry Nitrogen gas to the cryostat insulation space.
• To provide the capability of injecting xenon gas from cylinders into the manifold containing argon vent gas from cryostat feedthroughs, heading to argon condensing.

Scope of Work and Performance Specification General Description
Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) / Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) - US 6-5
6 General Description The Argon Distribution Equipment is responsible for:
• Transferring all argon (GAr and LAr) underground at SURF for LBNF, in order to build and maintain a stable, pure supply of LAr for the LBNF cryostats.
• Transferring, in a limited capacity, gaseous and liquid nitrogen (for regeneration) throughout the underground portion of the LBNF.
• Installing hardware and equipment delivered by partners as In-Kind Contributions (IKC).
• Providing dry Nitrogen gas for the cryostat insulation space.
• Providing the capability of injecting xenon gas from cylinders into the manifold containing argon vent gas from cryostat feedthroughs, heading to argon condensers.
• Connecting the LAr Purification and Purity Monitors.
• Analyzing GN2 content of GAr from the surface during cryostat filling.
A simple flow schematic for the LBNF cryogenics subsystems is shown in Figure 6-1 ; the supply includes all of the argon piping underground within the CUC, the drifts between the CUC and the Detector Caverns, and within the Detector Caverns themselves.
Figure 6-1 Simplified flow schematic for LBNF cryogenics with most of the supply boxed in red.
Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) / Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) - US 6-6
Beyond the general functions outlined previously, the Argon Distribution Equipment must adhere to stringent requirements in several key areas, crucial for safeguarding LBNF's argon supply and optimal cryostat performance. While detailed specifications for each aspect are outlined in sections 7 through 16, a summary of these critical considerations is provided below:
• Material Compatibility: All Argon Distribution System materials must be new, engineered for the specific operating conditions, and compatible with argon and nitrogen at extreme temperatures (i.e., 87 K and 77 K respectively). Pressure vessels, piping, and components must comply with relevant codes and standards. Corrosion protection for milled steel is mandatory.
Material test reports and prior FRA approval are required for specific materials and components, ensuring system integrity and performance.
• Leak Tightness: Given the underground installation and sensitive nature of the LBNF, achieving near-impermeability is paramount. The maximum leak rates at the maximum pressure differential for all components are defined in their respective documentation (Appendix B). As a reference, note that the global leak rate for the piping is set at 10-9 Pa·m3·s-1.
• Thermal Insulation: Some of the scope requires meticulous thermal insulation. For this purpose, vacuum jacketed piping (VJ) with aluminized mylar, Multi Layer Insulation (MLI) shall be utilized. This VJ piping shall adhere to strict heat leak limits and vacuum levels detailed in the scope’s documentation (Appendix B).
• Component Interfaces: Whenever possible, welding connections shall be employed for all connections within the scope of the supply. If welded connections are not feasible due to specific design or operational requirements, metal gaskets shall be used in conjunction with flanged connections (e.g. ConFlat® flanges).
• Vacuum Insulated Interfaces: The Subcontractor shall utilize field joints for vacuum insulated piping interfaces. These joints consist of process and vacuum jacket pipes connected by a cover with a pump port, with labyrinth connections to minimize heat inleak.
• Underground Installation: Whole scope of the supply will be installed deep within the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) at the 4850-foot level. Due to limited access and complex logistics constraints, the design and assembly shall prioritize modularity, pre-assembly, and strategic component placement for efficient installation.
