WATER TREATMENT PLANT AND DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS DESCRIPTION
The Contractor shall develop and implement a PM program for the Water Treatment and Distribution Systems and all mechanically and electrically interlocked ancillary parts, equipment and components of the Systems;
such as: source wells, well pumps, well and water meters, ground reservoirs, storage tanks, elevated towers, hydro-pneumatic tanks, high service pumps, fire booster pumps, cathodic protection system, chlorine injection via metering pumps, automatic pH and chlorine analyzer, Sodium Hypochlorite storage for disinfection, degasifiers, control systems, valves (gate, ball, butterfly, air release, blow-off, post indicator), hydrants, backflow preventers, pressure reducing valves, automatic valves, gas/diesel powered pumps, piping, water conveying equipment, and associated hardware). Water distribution begins at the point of water source and ends 5 feet from the building or structure served (and includes) cutoff valve, hydrant, or utility system backflow preventer (regardless of location) of the building or structure being served.
Water Treatment Plant and Distribution System
The Chesapeake Bay Detachment (CBD): CBD receives its water supply from two (2) 350 foot deep wells. One is located in Building 81 (Well No. 6) and the other is located in Building 82 (Well No. 7). The wells have six-inch casings and are fitted with 30 HP electric drive submersible pumps. Each pump has a pumping capacity of 200 gallons per minute against a head of 400 feet (288,000 GPD). The well water in Building 81 is chlorinated, using sodium hypochlorite, which is injected into the water through a manifold, and then is pumped directly to a 400,000 gallon elevated storage tank. The well water in Building 82 is also chlorinated, using sodium hypochlorite which is injected into the water through a manifold, and then is pumped into the water distribution system. The flow of water is measured at intake by water meters. CBD water needs are approximately 10,000 gallons per day.
The Navy Dock Area has its water supplied by the Town of Chesapeake Beach, Maryland.
Tilghman Island receives its water supply from a shallow well. The water at Tilghman Island is not chlorinated.
The underground water distribution pipeline system is a basic “branch” system with several dead ends. The distribution piping consists of approximately 21,240 linear feet of piping. The piping varies in size from ¾ inch to 14 inches in diameter. There are approximately 40 sectionalizing valves at CBD. Most of the 6 inch to 14 inch is transite with the remaining pipe made up of a combination of cast iron, galvanized and copper pipe. Static pressure in the distribution system is generally in the range of 55 to 80 PSI. Flow pressures typically recorded are in the range of 20 to 70 PSI.
