1.0 Introduction
1.1 Background
The U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) Tactical Local Area Network (TACLAN) program integrates software (commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) and government off-the-shelf (GOTS)) and hardware into modular, scalable systems that extend the required fixed-base garrison automation capabilities of the Non-secure Internet Protocol Router Network (NIPRNET), SECRET Internet Protocol Router Network (SIPRNET), Joint Worldwide Intelligence Communications System (JWICS), and Coalition networked systems to tactical Special Operations Forces (SOF) units and remote operators.
The TACLAN Version 10.1 server build starts with the First-In, Last-Out (FILO) Panasonic CF- 52 laptop. The purpose of the FILO laptop is to be scalable in a small or large TACLAN environment. As a Joint Special Operations Task Force (JSOTF) or subordinate SOF Headquarters operation progresses, the deployment scale and footprint may change from initially small, perhaps larger in the mid-stages of an operation, and then shrinking during the redeployment phase. TACLAN will be scalable to accommodate easy network resizing to meet mission requirements.
In a full TACLAN segment, the FILO is initially built from a universal serial bus (USB) drive and hosts Active Directory Domain Name System (DNS), Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), Windows Deployment Services (WDS) for Pre-Execution Environment (PXE), Distributed File System Namespace (DFS-N) and Hyper-V (VMware vSphere Virtual Center Server) services. All subsequent server operating systems, including VMware ESX, are installed via the PXE boot and WDS that are hosted on the FILO laptop. The majority of the build process is handled through the "TACLAN Configurator", which serves as a central configuration point. In addition to building many of the scripts used during the installation process, it is also used to configure the switch, router, and shared storage devices. In a smaller “Single Server” environment, the FILO can be used to host an Exchange Server for email services or other Hyper-V Virtual Machines depending on mission needs.
The TACLAN Family of Systems is fielded at the seven Theater Special Operations Commands (TSOCs), four service component headquarters, and one sub-unified command headquarters all the way down to individual team levels. The focus of the TACLAN program remains to provide SOF, at the narrow end of the communications pipe, the automated information system capabilities needed to complete the mission successfully and with minimum risk. The software in Appendix A, forming the TACLAN Version 10.1 baseline release, supports the TACLAN Family of Systems listed in Table 1-1.

1.2 Applicability
TACLAN Version 10.1 is a new core image that was created from the knowledge gained during previous versions of TACLAN. Most importantly, the number of TACLAN Client builds has been reduced to only one unique image by using the Universal Imaging Utility (UIU).
Additional directories and files are installed on the TACLAN Version 10.1 USB external drive, but these files are used only in a few limited cases. Specific changes in this document and the reasons are:

The TACLAN Version 10.1 Version Description Document (VDD) applies to:
• Servers that are being delivered as part of the TACLAN Version 10.1 Full Suite fielding effort to include those storage devices identified in Appendix B of this VDD.
• All Clients that are supported by the TACLAN program, as identified in Appendix B of this VDD, regardless of the Server domain the Client may connect to or if the Client is operated in a stand-alone Mission Planning Kit or the Field Computing Device mode.
1.3 Version Description Document Purpose
This Version Description Document identifies and describes the hardware and software components for the TACLAN Version 10.1 baseline release and satisfies United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) Change Request CHGSIPR124365. It is a contract-required deliverable to the Government that identifies the software and hardware being released to the operational environment.
1.4 Requests for Software/Hardware Modifications
For any request for modification of software or hardware in the TACLAN baseline, please contact your user representative.
If a mission requires adding mission-specific software at the local level, then the local Designated Approving Authority (DAA) needs to review and accept the risk along with re-accrediting the system and the equipment.
2.0 Baseline Release Delivery
2.1 Documentation
An electronic copy of the following TACLAN Version 10.1 release documentation is posted, following government approval to field the Version 10.1 release, on the TACLAN SIPRNET website (universal resource locator of http://sofonline.socom.smil.mil/sites/sordac/C4P/taclan/ Pages/TACLAN.aspx) and the TACLAN JWICS website, (http://sof.socom.ic.gov/sites/sordac/taclan/default.aspx). The following documents will be located in subsite, TACLAN Version 10.1:
• Installation Manual
• System Administration Guide
• Version Description Document (VDD)
• Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Manual
• Accreditation documentation (certification letters for both NIPRNET and SIPRNET, as well as JWICS)
• Department of Defense (DoD) Information Assurance Certification and Accreditation
Process (DIACAP) Package
2.2 Media
Two unclassified USB bootable external hard drives containing the TACLAN Version 10.1 software release are provided for the installation and configuration of TACLAN Version 10.1 for all newly fielded TACLAN assets. The unclassified external hard drives are assembled from the following components: Toshiba SATA 500 gigabyte (GB) hard drive and external 2.5 hard drive enclosures.
TACLAN Version 10.1 is a new image. The Client operating system is Windows XP SP3 and contains all security updates as of delivery date. The Server operating system is Server 2008 R2 and contains all security updates as of delivery date. The external USB drive retains the ability to perform the types of installations that are documented in the TACLAN Version 10.1 Version Description Document.
The same external USB drive that has been configured with TACLAN Version 10.1 will be used to install the Version 10.1 Client image onto all Client platforms listed in Appendix B.
