1.0 Introduction

1.1 Background

The U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) Tactical Local Area Network (TACLAN) program integrates software (commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) and government off-the-shelf (GOTS)) and hardware into modular, scalable systems that extend the required fixed-base garrison automation capabilities of the Non-secure Internet Protocol Router Network (NIPRNET), SECRET Internet Protocol Router Network (SIPRNET), Joint Worldwide Intelligence Communications System (JWICS), and Coalition networked systems to tactical Special Operations Forces (SOF) units and remote operators.

The TACLAN Version 10.1 server build starts with the First-In, Last-Out (FILO) Panasonic CF- 52 laptop. The purpose of the FILO laptop is to be scalable in a small or large TACLAN environment. As a Joint Special Operations Task Force (JSOTF) or subordinate SOF Headquarters operation progresses, the deployment scale and footprint may change from initially small, perhaps larger in the mid-stages of an operation, and then shrinking during the redeployment phase. TACLAN will be scalable to accommodate easy network resizing to meet mission requirements.

In a full TACLAN segment, the FILO is initially built from a universal serial bus (USB) drive and hosts Active Directory Domain Name System (DNS), Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), Windows Deployment Services (WDS) for Pre-Execution Environment (PXE), Distributed File System Namespace (DFS-N) and Hyper-V (VMware vSphere Virtual Center Server) services. All subsequent server operating systems, including VMware ESX, are installed via the PXE boot and WDS that are hosted on the FILO laptop. The majority of the build process is handled through the “TACLAN Configurator,” which serves as a central configuration point. In addition to building many of the scripts used during the installation process, it is also used to configure the switch, router, and shared storage devices. In a smaller “Single Server” environment, the FILO can be used to host an Exchange Server for email services or other Hyper- V virtual machines, depending on mission needs.

The TACLAN Family of Systems is fielded at the seven Theater Special Operations Commands (TSOCs), four service component headquarters, and one sub-unified command headquarters all the way down to individual team levels. The focus of the TACLAN program remains to provide SOF, at the narrow end of the communications pipe, the automated information system capabilities needed to complete the mission successfully and with minimum risk. The software in Appendices B and C, forming the TACLAN Version 10.1 baseline release, supports the TACLAN Family of Systems listed in Table 1-1.

Table 1-1 TACLAN Family of Systems

TACLAN Types Full Suite Command and Control (C2) Suite Mission Planning Kit (MPK) Field Computing Device (FCD)

1.2 Applicability

The TACLAN Version 10.1 Software Requirements Specification (SRS) applies to:

• Servers that are being fielded as part of the TACLAN Version 10.1 Full Suite fielding effort to include those storage devices identified in Appendix B of the TACLAN Version 10.1 Version Description Document (VDD).

• All clients that remain supported by the TACLAN program (see Appendix B of the TACLAN Version 10.1 VDD for a complete list) regardless of the Server domain it may connect to. This SRS also applies to clients that operate in a stand-alone Mission Planning Kit or the Field Computing Device mode.

1.3 Software Requirements Specification Purpose

This SRS provides, for the TACLAN Version 10.1 baseline release, detailed information on the specific client and server software applications that support deployed SOF. The client baseline is Windows XP-based. The server baseline is a Windows 2008 R2-based VMware (virtualized) environment.

This SRS is structured as follows:

• Section 2.0 identifies the Client Core applications.

• Section 3.0 identifies the Client user-defined menu categories along with the applications associated with each of the menu categories.

• Section 4.0 identifies the Server applications (Core, as well as by Server type).

• Appendix A provides an alphabetical listing of acronyms and their meanings.

• Appendix B provides an alphabetical listing and detailed information on each of the client applications of the Version 10.1 baseline, including a brief functional description.

• Appendix C provides an alphabetical listing and detailed information on each of the server applications of the Version 10.1 baseline, including a brief functional description.

• Appendix D provides an alphabetical listing and detailed information on each of the utility applications of the Version 10.1 baseline, including a brief functional description.

1.4 Requirements Interface Descriptions

1.4.1 TACLAN Boot Menu

The Boot Menu interface will be initiated when the client device is booted from the external hard drive. The user should be able to boot to either the physical or virtual image loader.

1.4.2 TACLAN Image Menu

The Image Menu interface will be initiated after the user selects physical or virtual from the boot menu. The user should be able to image any client laptop, desktop, server or virtual machine from the image loader.

1.4.3 TACLAN Application Menu

The Application Menu will be initiated when the user starts the TACLAN.cmd command file from the shortcut on the client desktop. Applications are broken into sub-categories on the application menu to make it easier for users to locate the applications.

2.0 Client Core Applications

Each TACLAN Windows client contains a core set of applications as listed in Table 2-0. Some client applications are auto-loaded with a corresponding client classification. These applications are identified under the Classification column in Table 2-0.
