3.3

CLEANING AND RESTORATION OF BRONZE DOOR HARDWARE

A. Execution:

Step #1

All hardware should be removed from the doors prior to cleaning.

Step #2

If necessary, and if a lacquer coating exists, the restoration should begin with the removal of any clear organic coatings and residue using Acetone applied with dampened towels and natural bristle brushes.

Step #3

Dirt, oxidation and mild corrosion should be removed using detergents and non-abrasive 3M pads, rubbing in the direction of the metal grain.

Step #3a (alternate)

If the detergent is not effective in removing all dirt and corrosion, the following steps should be taken:

· Dirt, oxidation and mild corrosion should be removed by scrubbing the bronze using non-abrasive 3M pads and horse hair brushes with a slurry of #1 pumice and a 5% solution of Oxalic Acid in water.

· The metal should then be rinsed with clean water to remove the cleaning residue.

· This process should be continued until all oxidation and corrosion is removed.

Step #4

All surfaces should be thoroughly rinsed upon completion with clean water to neutralize the acid.

Step #5

Solvent should be applied to the clean metal with soft cloths for the final cleaning and for preparation of the coating.

Step #6 Apply sprayed lacquer coating (at least two coats).

Step #7

Oil or lubricate hardware and make any necessary repairs to ensure smooth operation.

Installation

1. Reinstall restored hardware per the drawings.

2.

Install new hardware per the drawings and specifications.
