PREPARATION

Review with the Contracting Officer the scope of work to be repaired and refinished in order that all existing woodwork shall receive adequate and sufficient treatment.
Protect surrounding walls, floor, ceiling and light fixtures and all other adjacent fixtures and finishes.
3. 2
REPAIR
Minor Holes/Cracks/Gouges
Any holes, cracks or gouges less than 5mm can be filled with a color matched hand wax.
Repair of Deep Scratches in Woodwork
Remove deep scratches by hand sanding along scratch an area 15mm to 30mm wider than scratch on both sides. Sand to smooth uniform surface, taking care to sand no deeper than necessary in order to maintain integrity of wood. Wipe away all sawdust and touch up with new matching penetrating oil stain only if required to match surrounding area. Note: Testing of sample areas of stain colors in concealed locations on the actual wood is critical where matching an existing stain to remain. Do not rely on manufacturer's color chips since the stain darkens different wood species to different degrees.
3.3
CLEANING
A.
Cleaning of Wooden Surfaces
1. All wood surfaces should be cleaned using an emulsion consisting of 50% mineral spirits and 40% distilled water and 10% Triton XL surfactant which should be applied with paper towels and soft brushes. At no time should this emulsion stay on the surface for more than 45 seconds to avoid swelling of the wood. The surface should then be cleaned with mineral spirits to remove any surfactant and buffed dry with soft cloths or paper towels.
2.
3.4
REFINISHING
Removal of Existing Coatings
Remove existing finish coating using methods recommended by Woodwork Restoration Specialist, taking care not to remove existing stain.
2.
The surface should then be lightly polished with 1,200-grit paper to remove dust and particles. All sanding dust should be completely removed prior to the application of coatings.
3.
Apply wood grain filler to all wood which has open grain or other damage such that sanding will not produce sufficiently smooth surface for finishing. Apply filler which is colored with stain and thinned with mineral spirits to a creamy consistency. Brush filler liberally along the direction of the grain and brush off lightly with the grain. After most thinner has evaporated (approximately 5 to 10 minutes), after filler has lost its gloss and become mealy but before it has set and hardened, wipe across grain with burlap or other coarse cloth to rub filler into pores and remove excess. Filler is ready for wiping when finger no longer slips when rubbed across surface and when filler forms a ball under pressure of rubbing. Final rub with clean cloths is along grain. Allow 24 hours drying time before applying finish coats.
B. Refinishing
Finish woodwork in accordance with Section 09900, Painting and Finishing.
2.
Where select areas of finishing are required at existing wood paneling, match existing adjacent finish to remain. Feather new finish as required to blend new and existing finishes.
3.4
CLEAN-UP
A. After each days work, remove all rags, cans, rubbish, discarded paint materials from the site.
B. Upon completion of the work, Contractor shall remove from the premises and dispose of all scaffolding and equipment, surplus material, empty containers and other debris resulting from his/her operations. The building and surrounding areas shall be left clean and neat in all respects.

The Contractor shall, upon completion, leave all glass areas, floors and walks, hardware, and all other adjacent surfaces clean and free from any stain, splatterings, smears, spills or smudges which are the result of his/her operations. Contractor shall replace any glass damaged in anyway by his/her operations.
