1.1 Scope
The former Loring AFB is located in Aroostook County in northern Maine, approximately 3 miles west of the Canadian (New Brunswick) border. The former Loring AFB occupies approximately 9,000 acres and is bordered on the south and east by the town of Limestone, on the north by the towns of Caswell and Connor, and on the west by the city of Caribou.
The former Loring AFB was placed on EPA’s National Priorities List of sites in 1990. The FFA governs the environmental activities being conducted at the former Loring AFB. Following the signing of the FFA, the former Loring AFB was placed on the U.S. Congress Base Closure List (1991) and was closed in September 1994. All property disposal actions are complete. Recipients include: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for a wildlife refuge; U.S. Department of Labor for a Job Corps Center; Loring Development Authority of Maine for economic development; Department of Interior holds some parcels for the Aroostook Band of MicMacs; and others.
