1.1 Scope
Former General Mitchell ARS is situated in the southwest portion of the General Mitchell International Airport (GMIA) property and has a footprint of approximately 101 acres in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. GMIA is located approximately 7 miles south of downtown Milwaukee and is surrounded by urban development on approximately 1,900 acres of land. Operations at GMIA include airfield operations facilities, the Wisconsin Air National Guard (WIANG), and the former General Mitchell ARS. GMIA is owned and operated by Milwaukee County.
General Mitchell ARS formally opened in 1941 as Hamilton Field, later renamed General Billy Mitchell Field. Prior to the USAF constructing the installation, the field may have been developed for agriculture. The 924th Reserve Training Wing was activated in February 1952, later re-designated as the 538th Fighter Bomber Wing on 1 July 1952, 274th Air Force Reserve Training Center (AFRTC) in 1953, and 2473rd AFRTC later that same year. The aircraft maintenance hangar with the heating plant, along with base supply and petroleum oils and lubricants (POL) areas were completed in 1956. The installation was renamed General Mitchell ARS in 1986 and officially closed on 2 February 2008 as part of the 2005 BRAC Commission.
Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) is the regulatory authority. USEPA is not involved.
