Solicitation #FA6656-09-R-0004 Construct Addition/Repair OSI Bldg 502 Questions with Answers/Clarifications as of 22 July 2009:
(Questions 1-5 pertain to Drawing FP-1)
1. Is sprinkler system wet (scope of work and Note #6 “installed inside the insulated area”) or dry as shown on details?
Response: Sprinkler system is to be dry pipe, as stated in note 1.
2. Is attic space to be sprinklered?
Response: Yes, as stated in note 1.
3. What do we design sprinkler system too, NFPA 13, UFC, or? Design density for light hazard - .10/3,900 Sq Ft + 250 GPM hose is not NFPA 13.
Response: Design to NFPA 13 is acceptable.
4. If we are doing dry attic system is 4” underground adequate or do we need 6” with hip roofs, flowing a lot of sprinklers.
Response: 4” is considered adequate.
5. Are sprinklers required over dock canopy?
Response: Yes, as code required.
6. Specifications Section #21-01-00
#101-B Section 23-01-00-HVAC applies to fire protection?
Response: Yes.
7. Specification Section @21-13-16
#2.03 Brass upright sprinklers. How about sprinklers in ceilings? Recessed, concealed, or?
Response: Concealed sprinklers in ceiling are acceptable.
8. #3.01 – F Paint or label exposed pipe – choice up to us?
Response: Painting of all exposed pipe OSHA red is acceptable
9. Is hydrant flow test information available for the site..if not, what is the normal pressure for the site.
Response: See Dwg.FP1.
10. The drawings and spec call for a all dry system. There is a heated plenum above the acoustical ceilings. Can that area be a wet pipe system with a dry pipe in the attic area. This would eliminate the need for dry pendent sprinklers and a considerable cost savings.
Response: No change to current design plans.
11. The drawings specify density of .1 GPM over 3900 square ft. the specifications call for Per NFPA 13 which would be .1 GPM over 1500 sq ft with 30 percent penalty for dry and 4/12 roof pitch which modifies the operating area to 2535 sq ft. which should I calculate to? (3900 sq ft is not referenced anywhere in NFPA 13) Response: Design to NFPA 13 is acceptable.
12. The spec calls for black schedule 10 for main piping and XL thread able thin wall pipe for the line pipe. Are you aware that the life expectancy for such piping on dry systems is 10-12 years under good conditions. You might want to consider schedule 10 galvanized for main piping and schedule 40 galvanized piping. The fittings can be black or painted as they are cast or ductile and do not corrode.
Response: Galvanized pipe is acceptable. Reference attached spec 21 13 16, which incorporates the change.
