FIRE-SPRINKLER PROTECTION SPECIFICATION 210000 - 1
SECTION 211000 – FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEMS
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 SUMMARY
A. Section Includes:
1. Pipes, fittings, and specialties.
2. Fire-protection valves.
3. Fire-department connections.
4. Sprinklers.
5. Alarm devices.
6. Pressure gages.
B. Work description:
1. The work includes complete design and installation of a fire protection system, including coordination with all other affected trades.
1.2 SYSTEM DESCRIPTIONS
A. Convert existing dry pipe fire sprinkler system to a wet pipe system for the main heated spaces and dry pipe system for the attic and mechanical boiler room for the main office building.
B. Wet-Pipe Sprinkler System: Automatic sprinklers are attached to piping containing water and that is connected to water supply through alarm valve. Water discharges immediately from sprinklers when they are opened. Sprinklers open when heat melts fusible link or destroys frangible device. Hose connections are included if indicated.
C. Dry-pipe sprinkler system routes in unprotected, combustible unheated spaces (boiler room and attic space and other unprotected spaces). Dry pipe system consists of a dry pipe alarm valve, new air compressor and related devices for a fully functioning system. Sprinklers open when heat melts fusible link or destroys frangible device and opens dry pipe valve to evacuate air and lets water flow to zone. Reuse existing dry pipe components
1.3 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
A. Standard-Pressure Piping System Component: Listed for 175-psig minimum working pressure.
B. Delegated Design: Design sprinkler system, including comprehensive engineering analysis by a person qualified under AS 08.48, using performance requirements and design criteria indicated.
1. Obtain fire flow tests from the local jurisdiction or conduct a flow test to suit the requirements for a hydraulic design.
C. Sprinkler system design shall be approved by authorities having jurisdiction.

D. Specialty Valves:
1. General Requirements: Install in vertical position for proper direction of flow, in main supply to system.
2. Alarm Valves: Include bypass check valve and retarding chamber drain-line connection.
3.5 SPRINKLER INSTALLATION
A. Install sprinklers in suspended ceilings in center of acoustical ceiling panels.
B. Install dry-type sprinklers with water supply from heated space. Do not install pendent or sidewall, wet-type sprinklers in areas subject to freezing.
C. Install sprinklers into flexible, sprinkler hose fittings and install hose into bracket on ceiling grid.
3.6 FIRE-DEPARTMENT CONNECTION INSTALLATION
A. Install wall-type, fire-department connections.
B. Install automatic (ball drip) drain valve at each check valve for fire-department connection.
3.7 IDENTIFICATION
A. Install labeling and pipe markers on equipment and piping according to requirements in
NFPA 13.
FIRE-SPRINKLER PROTECTION SPECIFICATION 210000 - 17
B. Identify system components, wiring, cabling, and terminals. Comply with requirements for identification specified in Division 26 Section "Identification for Electrical Systems."
3.8 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL
A. Perform tests and inspections.
B. Tests and Inspections:
1. Leak Test: After installation, charge systems and test for leaks. Repair leaks and retest until no leaks exist.
2. Test and adjust controls and safeties. Replace damaged and malfunctioning controls and equipment.
3. Flush, test, and inspect sprinkler systems according to NFPA 13, "Systems Acceptance" Chapter.
4. Energize circuits to electrical equipment and devices.
5. Coordinate with fire-alarm tests. Operate as required.
6. Coordinate with fire-pump tests. Operate as required.
7. Verify that equipment hose threads are same as local fire-department equipment.
C. Sprinkler piping system will be considered defective if it does not pass tests and inspections.
D. Prepare test and inspection reports.
3.9 CLEANING
A. Clean dirt and debris from sprinklers.
B. Remove and replace sprinklers with paint other than factory finish.
3.10 PIPING SCHEDULE
A. Piping between Fire-Department Connections and Check Valves: Galvanized, standard-weight steel pipe with grooved ends; grooved-end fittings; grooved-end-pipe couplings; and grooved joints.
