The project involves reconstructing 4.17 miles of US Route 50 to provide a consistent 12-foot travel way and 1.5 miles of climbing lanes near Montrose, Colorado. Significant work includes large scale rock excavation and embankment, roadway realignment and widening, MSE retaining walls, drainage culverts, guardrail, asphalt pavement, minor bridge work, and traffic control measures. Notable quantities include 180,000 cubic yards of roadway excavation, 38,500 cubic yards of waste, 580 cubic yards of grouted riprap for stream armoring, 60,000 square feet of mechanically stabilized earth walls, 2,500 linear feet of rock bolts, and 70,000 tons of aggregate base. Electronic CAD files will not be provided to contractors. Excavation required for stream armoring is considered incidental and will not be paid under the roadway excavation item. The project is administered by the Federal Highway Administration and Colorado Department of Transportation.
