Test Method
ASTM D2859 - Ignition Characteristics of Finished Textile Floor Covering Materials
Test Overview
Eight test specimens (9 by 9 inches) are cut from the test material across the machine roll width, cleaned with a vacuum and conditioned.
Test specimens are numbered sequentially from left to right. Test specimens are placed in an oven permitting free circulation of air at 105 +/- 2 degrees Celsius for 2 hours in order to fully dry the specimens. Test specimens are then removed from the oven and placed in a desiccator until they reach room temperature for testing. Test specimen is removed and placed on a horizontal plane with the pile side upright. A steel frame aligned with the edges of the specimen and placed on top of the specimen. A methenamine tablet "Pill" is placed flat on the center of the test specimen and ignited with a flame carefully to avoid contact with the test specimen. The specimen is a allowed to burn until it self-extinguished or until the flame reaches the edge of the steel frame. Once each of the eight test specimens are tested, they are evaluated to determine if the test specimen passed or failed. An individual test specimen passes if the distance from the charred portion of the test specimen to the steel frame is greater than one inch.

Result Interpretation
This test which uses a methenamine tablet is commonly referred to as a "pill" or "tablet" test. Test material is considered to PASS if 7 out 8 test specimens meet the PASS criteria. PASS Criteria - The distance from the charred portion of the test specimen to the steel frame is greater than one inch. The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission's (CPSC) requires at least 7 of 8 test specimens to pass the test criteria to meet the standard for requirements of Title 16, Code of Federal Regulations, Chapter II Subchapter D, Part 1630 Standard for the Surface Flammability of Carpets and Rugs (FF 1-70.) If charred area is approximately the size of a quarter, the result is recorded as
3.5 inches. If the charred area is larger than a quarter, the distance from the charred area to the edge of the closest metal frame is measured and recorded.

Smoke Density Test
Test Method: The test was conducted in accordance with the ASTM International fire test response standard E662–17a, Specific Optical Density of Smoke Generated by Solid Materials. It provides a means of determining specific optical density of smoke generated by materials mounted in a vertical position. Results are expressed in terms of specific optical density. The method employs an electrically heated radiant–energy source positioned so as to produce an irradiance level of 2.5 W/cm2 over the center of a vertically mounted 76.2 mm square specimen. This exposure provides the nonflaming condition of the test. For the flaming condition, a six–tube burner is used to apply a row of equidistant flamelets across the lower edge of the specimen in addition to the specified irradiance level from the heating element. Specimens are exposed to the flaming and nonflaming conditions within a closed chamber while varying light transmission is measured using a photometric system with a vertical light path. These measurements are used to calculate specific optical density of the smoke generated during the time period to reach the maximum value.

ASTM D5252 - Operation of the Hexapod Tumble Drum Tester and
ASTM D7330 - Assessment of Surface Change in Pile Floor Coverings Using Standard Reference
Test Overview
Hexapod Tumble Drum - A test specimen of approximately 18.5 by 8 inches is cut and conditioned from the test material with the long dimension parallel to the lengthwise direction of the pile. The test specimen is taped to the specimen backing sheet and placed smoothly inside the drum of the Hexapod Tumble Tester. The selected hexapod tumbler is placed in the drum and the lid of the drum is secured. The revolution counter is set for 2000 revolutions. After 2000 revolutions, the hexapod tumbler is removed and the mounted specimen is vacuumed making four passes along the length of the specimen. This process is repeated until the required number of rotations is completed for the test specimen. The test specimen is then removed and conditioned to evaluate for differences in surface appearance in accordance with ASTM D7330 (see below.)
Assessment of Surface Change - The exposed and unexposed test specimens are placed under and perpendicular to a specified light source and oriented so that the pile direction is the same for both specimens. The appropriate Carpet and Rug Institute's reference rating scale is selected based on the construction of the test material. A minimum of 3 assessors grade the exposed test specimen independently by comparing the exposed test specimen to the unexposed specimen by observing features such as crushing, loss of tuft definition and matting.
A Texture Appearance Retention Rating (TARR) is determined based on the the assessment.
Test Results
Yarn Type Nylon Category Contract
Cycles 12000 Texture Appearance Retention Rating (TARR) 3.5
TARR Use Classification (Contract/Commercial only) Severe
Result Interpretation
The Texture Appearance Retention Rating (TARR) is determined for Residential, Needlebond and Contract/Commercial products by comparing test specimens exposed to mechanical wear using a Hexapod Tumbling Drum and unexposed specimens. TARR is a numerical rating (1.0 - 5.0) where 5.0 is "no change in appearance" and a 1.0 is a "severe change in appearance." Additionally, a TARR Use Classification (A, B, C, or D) is provided for Contract/Commercial products where D is recommended for "severe" traffic and A is recommended for "light" traffic.
Deviations from Standard Test Method
Central Lab cuts test specimens 18.5 by 8 inches versus the standard requirement of 37 by 8 inches.

How To Verify The Origin Of A Shaw Floor Determining where a Shaw floor was made involves checking product labeling, documentation, and retailer details. Origin information can influence expectations about lead times, installation support, and warranty handling. Consumers should verify with primary sources whenever origin is not clearly stated on the packaging or product page.
To verify a Shaw floor’s origin, consider these steps. First, inspect the packaging for a country-of-manufacture statement such as “Made in USA” or another origin label. Second, review the product page on the retailer’s site and download the product data sheet or specifications sheet, which often lists country of manufacture. Third, contact Shaw customer service or the retailer for explicit origin confirmation. Fourth, be mindful of labeling claims and FTC guidelines about Made in USA statements, which may require a substantial domestic manufacturing component.
Check packaging for a country-of-origin label and any “Made in USA” claim.
Review retailer product pages and download data sheets for origin details.
Ask Shaw customer service or the retailer directly if origin is unclear.
Understand labeling standards to interpret origin claims accurately.
Why The Origin Matters For Consumers Where Shaw flooring is made can impact several practical considerations for buyers and designers. Domestic manufacturing often correlates with shorter lead times, easier service and warranty logistics, and stronger alignment with local codes and installation practices. It can also influence transportation costs and environmental impact due to reduced international shipping in some product lines. Conversely, international sourcing may offer cost advantages or access to materials not readily available domestically, affecting price and availability.
Origin information also matters for sustainability and ethics considerations. Shaw has initiatives aimed at responsible sourcing, recycling, and reducing environmental impact across its supply chain. For architects and designers, origin details support transparent material specifications, environmental product declarations, and compliance with project sustainability goals. In all cases, customers benefit from clear origin information to make informed decisions that balance price, performance, and long-term reliability.
